    Hank's Service Center

    Hank's Service Center

I tried Hank's Service Center for the first time about three years ago. My usual long term mechanic…read moreclosed up shop and I was devastated because he was honest. I asked around town if anyone has an HONEST and GOOD mechanic and two told me about Hank. I first came to him for a second opinion to have him troubleshoot an issue with my older SUV to see if a leak was fixed or not; basically if the residual staining was new or old. Truth be told he could have lied and told me it needed work and done work on it. But he said he thought they did fix it because it's not leaking. He kept the car two days to leave it running to see. He wouldn't charge me anything for his time and trouble and I had to insist he take something because he did keep it and evaluate it. I told him I'd most definitely be back when I needed work again. I did go back a few months later. I brought my other SUV in for brakes. I didn't know exactly if needed brakes or rotors or both and was prepared for all new ones. But Hank was honest and told me I didn't need new brakes. He adjusted what I needed and sent me on my way with a very reasonable bill. Finally this week after going another 25K miles on that SUV I needed the brakes and rotors. So I came back and Hank did it in a few hours. I also thought I needed shocks because it was riding hard asked him to look it all over since I'm at 111k miles on the car and if I need any hoses or other things please tell me. And again I would have believed I needed whatever he said. But again he told me he took it out for a drive and all I needed was brakes and rotors and he said if I ride with more air in the tires it will be smoother because the shocks and struts are all fine. And indeed with the more air he put in, it is it smoother now. And again his charge for the brakes and rotors was very reasonable. So today I brought our other car in because it does need struts and shocks and other things and Hank called me in an hour or so with a rundown about what it needs, what I might need soon and what it doesn't. He was honest again about what I could put off and how long etc. He told me the options for the different parts - some more money and why and let me choose. So again. He didn't try to sell me what I don't need or up charge what o do. Long story short. It's hard as a woman who knows some but not enough about cars not to be taken advantage of. I have high praise for Hank. He is indeed an honest and a good mechanic. He gets the job done quickly and cleanly and well. I HIGHLY recommend him.

A small thing but they are terrible as far as customer service and common sense…read more I stopped to use their air pump. Paid a dollar fifty and the pump was not working properly. Told the mechanic who observed the entire problem. He was filling another tire in the garage so I told him about my problem and he said we don't do that. He then called the manager over who also told me no. The entire procedure would have taken less than a minute. Thanks for your assistance.

When a woman hit my rear bumper in a parking lot last winter, she offered to pay for the damages…read moreinstead of putting it through insurance and insisted that I take it to Grand Auto, even though I have another mechanic that I go to regularly, because her husband is good friends with the owner. Since she was paying, I didn't protest. Han (the owner) did a great job on my car and treated me very well. He even offered to pay for a rental while my car was in his shop. I'm not sure if that's something he does for everyone or if he did that because his friend was the one paying, but it was kind nonetheless. This year, my car was having new problems and I decided to take it to Han again because I was very pleased with his work last time. He's very friendly and extremely knowledgeable about auto repair, but the price he charged me for labor was super steep. I wound up going to Ray Auto Repair in North Haledon who charged me a whole $100 less for a very thorough job. However, he's a close friend of my boyfriend's dad, so that's probably the reason why it was so cheap. I wonder if Ray would've charged the same price as Han had I not had connections, but I never got around to asking. BOTTOM LINE: BE BESTIES WITH A MECHANIC.
