I seem to remember I got recommended this by a local Richmond is actually situated on low-lying, flat Lulu Island. In fact it's in need of sea defences. These dykes provide a lovely level walk. I was told it's a bit of a tradition for some to take Sunday walk there.
I started off South of the airport. Great views of planes taking off! As you progress you get to see open reed beds and marsh. The dykes also go through some woods. I got to see a heron at close range as it calmly fished in the ditch on the inside of the dyke.
There were some toilets at the start of my route. Others further on were closed though. I also went on a Sunday, and found that it was actually not brilliantly accessible via the bus, and ended up walking quite some distance through the back streets. Since the dykes go all the way to Steveston it might have been better to take a bus there and do an out and back route maybe another time!
Anyway, lovely, peaceful, and a nice contrast to the steep wooded walks you'll find in the mountains to the north. read more
