The structure itself is just a…read morelovely design, and having grown up going to the Gulf every weekend and sailing and seeing the amazing cargo ships, sailboats, and larger ships, this was a delightful experience when passing through Mobile. There are many little factual exhibits on the structure with a lot of interactive experiences. You can navigate (and crash or sink) your ship, feel the Crow's Nest experience, learn about the people who really first landed in Mobile, learn about those fascinating cargo ships going in and out of the port as you watch them, and also learn about the wildlife encountered at sea. Even as an adult, I appreciated the experience. This was a very different sort of museum, not huge, but you could certainly spend some time there.

There is a section on Mardi Gras, the history of the lands, the peoples who were here before the Europeans. The kids' section was super cute. The exhibit on mourning was also great. I do like knowing about the history of mourning. The timeline that included slavery was eye-opening. The area with all of the buggies was delightful, and I wish I could ride one! It turned out to be one of the best birthday surprises I've ever planned. We visited on a Wednesday, and it was the perfect day to go. The crowds were light, which gave us plenty of time to explore at our own pace. One piece of advice: grab a map and actually use it! My husband was in charge of navigation, and somehow we almost missed a huge section of the ship. The USS Alabama is fascinating from top to bottom. Walking through the sleeping quarters, mess halls, engine rooms, and gun turrets really gives you an appreciation for the people who served aboard her. The grounds also include historic aircraft and military exhibits, so plan to spend more time than you think you'll need. Parking is an additional $5, so keep that in mind when budgeting your visit. If you're eligible for military, senior, or group discounts, be sure to ask about available savings before purchasing tickets. Fun fact: The USS Alabama earned nine battle stars during World War II and is often referred to as "The Lucky A" because she returned from combat without losing a crew member to enemy action. Learning little pieces of history like that made the experience even more meaningful. If you enjoy history, military museums, or simply exploring unique places, this is absolutely worth the trip. The battleship itself is massive and well-preserved, giving you a real sense of what life was like for sailors during World War II. Parking is free, the site is very close to the freeway, the museum staff are very friendly, knowledgeable, and helpful, and the displays are great. We took advantage of the free museum guided tour and learned so much about the history of Mardi Gras, like the fact that the first Mardi Gras celebration held in America was in Mobile, not New Orleans. That was just for starters. The displays are excellent, too, and they change periodically. The cost is pretty reasonable and there's a great little gift shop where you'll get a free moon pie at the conclusion of your visit. I'm sure we'll be back at some point!

It's not breathtaking like the Fort of San Marcos of course and it's rather smaller than I had anticipated. But there worked with what they had and there was loads of information in the placards of the history of the French, Spanish and British during those times in this area.

We drove to the Heritage House thinking we would be able to see the exhibit at 10am. Shame on us for not checking the website! The tickets were sold out until noon. We then bought tickets on line for later in the day. The Heritage House is a beautiful building but not very large. Despite its size they hosted an outstanding exhibit! We learned so much and were really moved by the stories you heard on the free audio guide. We also learned how Africatown was founded. All very interesting. I'm so glad we got to see this. No photography is allowed in the exhibition. They have many outstanding pieces on display as well as very well curated story boards that explain the history of the Clotilda. There is a small gift shop when you enter with a nice array of books, tshirts and jewelry.
