We love stopping in to see what's new and they do get new items and exhibits loaned to them that keeps it fresh. Our visit yesterday was to support their open house that included some very nice refreshments. Besides some delish coffee, tea & excellent punch there was chic salad sandwiches, fresh fruit, veggies with dip and delicious cup cakes. Why am I reviewing food? Well I can't help myself LOL Okay before I talk about what's inside let's look at how it all came to be. Located at 244 W. 19th Ave. in Gulf Shores, AL the building has an interesting history. It was originally a beach house for the Mobile family of Valorie Cole dating back to before World War II. It was always here on 19th street, in fact, it was located on West Beach, and was donated to the city following Hurricane Frederic in 1979. The building has been in use by the city since 1982, first as the library, then as the youth center. It's kinda like the little building that could :-) The land was generously donated by Claude O'Connor, and Wade and Pat Ward. Also Oyster Bay Baptist Church donated their steeple in 1999 to watch over the garden which has dedicated benches and is quite zen-like. Out front is another donated item, a 40-foot mast donated by Walter Nelson and Jimmy Nelson of Nelson's Boat Yard that's used as a flag display. The mast was built in 1940 and was on a local shrimp boat the Sea Biscuit. They have done a great job making this place into a comfortable, warm and invitingly charming experience for the whole family. There's a couple rooms that really tell the story of Gulf Shores with some interactive displays, maps, photos and artifacts. A music section, a room dedicated to hurricanes, complete with a movie, and really a whole lot more. If you haven't checked it out when visiting or if you're a local you'll be glad you did once you see all they offer. Christie Shannon is the museum administrator and is VERY knowledgeable about everything inside and out of her charges and she's friendly, articulate and just a terrific representative of what I now refer to as "my little museum". She has always welcomed us and walks us through what's new and up and coming stuff as well. I know I keep using the term "little" but that's because I've made many visits to the many Smithsonian's in DC, and museums in Boston, Chicago & L.A. just to name a few and of course this one is in someone's former beach house, so relatively it is little. But they make use of every square inch and it's bigger inside than it looks. Bottom line: I highly recommend this great local museum. Ten Sixty Five Fest! The name gives me chills of excitement! The music spectacular of the fall…read morecalendar is Ten Sixty Five and makes music lovers of all kinds coming out and support local and nationally recognized musicians performing in Mobile! Put on through the Jake Peavy Foundation in partnership with many local businesses including Gulf Distributing, Austal, Regions Bank, and others, it's a 100 percent FREE festival held for an entire weekend in Downtown Mobile! Aptly named as Mobile is where I-10 and I-65 meet forming a crossroads for the nation, Ten Sixty Five brings a myriad of regional, local, and national music acts from all genres to Mobile to show us what they can do! The main festival stage takes over the end of Dauphin Street near Moe's BBQ in the Lower Dauphin Street Entertainment Area for three days allowing local bands and national headliners to descend on downtown Mobile to entertain Mobilians and visitors alike. Spanning the music of today in the genres of Folk, Rock, Alternative, and a little Bluegrass and Country there is something for everyone, Last year local heroes the Mulligan Brothers played, as did nationally renowned recording artists the Counting Crows, with Trombone Shorty and others rounding out the lineup! This year the list is riddled with alternative rock groups that will be sure to draw major crowds such as Cage the Elephant and Judah and the Lion; both of which have been featured on Sirius XM for years now. Local favorites Wet Willie will be jamming out like hometown hero Jimmy Buffet bringing that Mobile bay and beach vibe to Ten Sixty Five. In addition, Southern Rockers and national recording artists Blackberry Smoke will grace the Ten Sixty Five stage bringing their unique sound which seems to take its roots from that of Confederate Railroad and .38 Special! In my opinion Ten Sixty Five is a can't miss event of the fall and showcases the absolute uniqueness of the Mobile community and its desire to be known as a business, social, music, and food mecca of the Gulf Coast. With Bayfest being gone, this was an event that needed to happen and in the eyes of this Mobilian is a welcome addition to the entertainment calendar.

I love when Mobile is able to put events like this together…read more 1065 took the place of Bayfest and while it didn't secure the most popular bands or singers, it delivered fantastic groups- both local and non-locals (it did grab Cage the Elephant!). For a free event, it didn't disappoint. It's always nice to see a variety of people turn out to support and enjoy things like this. It's located in the heart of downtown with carrots stages scattered along Dauphin street, close enough to walk to the next but far enough the sounds don't take over each other. It's also in a prime location for fantastic restaurants and bars to keep you fed and hydrated. It's a must for anyone who hasn't been, at least once!

There are usually a plethora of vendors set up selling handmade crafts such as jewelry, crocheted hats and throws, wreaths, bow ties, beauty products, paintings, photographs, blown glass...you name it, there's someone selling it. There weren't as many tonight, which could have something to do with the fact that it's 3 degrees hotter than hell outside. Usually, it's packed. You'll see musicians set up on the streets and shops will be open a little late. This is really a fun and interesting little reoccurring event held in downtown Mobile!

We were visiting Mobile and learned of the Clotilda exhibition in Africatown. My husband had read…read moreabout the Clotilda so we were interested in learning more. We drove to the Heritage House thinking we would be able to see the exhibit at 10am. Shame on us for not checking the website! The tickets were sold out until noon. We then bought tickets on line for later in the day. The Heritage House is a beautiful building but not very large. Despite its size they hosted an outstanding exhibit! We learned so much and were really moved by the stories you heard on the free audio guide. We also learned how Africatown was founded. All very interesting. I'm so glad we got to see this. No photography is allowed in the exhibition. They have many outstanding pieces on display as well as very well curated story boards that explain the history of the Clotilda. There is a small gift shop when you enter with a nice array of books, tshirts and jewelry.

My husband and I attended the Baldwin County Fair in Robertsdale on Friday, August 19, 2025 and we…read morewere so pleasantly surprised by the kindness shown right at the gate. As we walked up, the lady at the ticket table noticed my husband's veteran ID and asked if he was a Veteran. When he said yes, she kindly let us know that veterans were admitted free of charge. What an incredible gesture! It really touched us that the fair takes the time to honor and acknowledge our veterans in this way. The fair itself was wonderful--smaller, very family-oriented, and welcoming. The food was delicious, and we especially enjoyed the bucket of fries and a classic corn dog. Prices were very reasonable, even lower than what we're used to paying at our local fair in Mobile, and that was another pleasant surprise. This was our very first time attending the Baldwin County Fair, but it will certainly not be our last. The entire atmosphere was friendly and inviting, and it made for such an enjoyable evening. Thank you to the staff and volunteers who helped make the fair so special, and a very heartfelt thank-you again for honoring veterans. That one simple act of kindness made our night, and it showed us what a thoughtful and community-centered fair Baldwin County has to offer. Thank you for such great hospitality.
