This store is so quaint and charming that you feel you're in a Parisian chocolatier. Coco Chocolate is a specialty organic chocolate shop that makes all sorts of tasty wonders to whiz your head into a spin. You won't get the cheap additives (like vegetable fat and powdered milk) that bulk up the mass produced chocolates as Coco uses, as they say, 'expensive cocoa and cocoa butter'. And well, these expensive ingredients do translate of course to expensive chocolates. The thing is with this organic chocolate compared to other organic chocolate is that it is packaged in boxes that are quirky, original and beautiful - keepers they are - so are more gift chocolate than daily indulgent chocolate. A favorite is the Organic Handmade Dark Chocolate With Rose & Black Pepper made with 64% organic dark chocolate, organic ground black pepper and 100% pure rose oil. One last thing that I'm sure is worth a mention - tastings... in store.

The packaging is beautiful and reminds me of my Grandpa tobacco pouch - bound with the secret of the forbidden contents within. I love the Earl Grey Dark Chocolate, as well as the Lavender Milk Chocolate. The flavours are so refined and elegant, it's hard to stop at one pouch. In fact I don't think I ever have. If you're a bit so-so about chocolate this shop will elevate you. It's hard not to be as passionate as the owner Rebecca clearly is. They have another shop in Kirribilli too.

But Nestle and Cadbury just don't cut the mustard for (self-proclaimed) choccy connoisseurs like me. Bon Bon is a fine chocolate shop on the front corner of The Strand Arcade in Sydney. Gorgeous dark wood and chandeliers dress this boutique store. The very helpful shop assistant Michelle mentioned they were opening a chocolate cafe downstairs within the month so if you need an excuse to tickle your chocolate taste buds take your mum to this quaint little store during a shopping day out. I bought a 150g packet of super delicious 60% dark chocolate coated sun dried cherries for $8.90. Michelle says these fly out the door and I understand why - though they look like mini brown brains they taste sensational! What's more they come in an organic version if you prefer a slightly smoother (and more expensive) chocolate. The organic and fair trade range is quite small but there are plans to expand. Though Bon Bon import their chocolate from Belgium (the queen of chocolate countries) they make their chocolates in Gosford so are technically Australian made. They have a huge range of specialty chocolates including the Champagne Cork (finely ground hazelnut praline encased in rich white Belgian chocolate), Forest Fruit (consort of raspberry and blackcurrant cream encased in milk chocolate and topped with a dried cranberry, Halliday Dark (praline in feuillantine [ultra thin wafer sheets] coated in dark chocolate) and Apply Strudel (apple and cinnamon vanilla ganache coated in milk and white chocolate). When I was eventually served, I ordered a croissant and coffee and started to login on Facebook. A glass of water arrived from another waitress, who returned with the news that there were no croissants. The owner/manager (?) called out from the stairs that there were no croissants as it was the weekend. OMG, is this Sydney the international city? Walked home and had a self-made coffee with cinnamon toast!

Oh and of course it is all organic. Given all this you might think a trip to Coco Chocolate may be a bit too pretentious for your liking. In actuality, a stop a Coco Chocolate is both a pleasure and an indulgence. The shop itself is actually quite humble considering the quality of the chocolate it is home to. Chocolate lines the walls and the centre of this charming space is actually a communal table which is very inviting for a coffee or tea. Staff know their products inside out and are very helpful with suggestions and any questions you might have. Any of their treats make for a wonderful gift, so if you're looking for something a bit different this is the place to pick it up!

I can still smell the dark, wickedly non-bitter and very very moreish chocolate..... *drools*…read more.. Why? Because I could not leave the store without buying some. :-) On the hunt for yet another cafe, I stumbled upon a store front that almost seemed boarded up with news clippings and other laminated articles, and if it was not for the "Chocolate" that caught my eye, I may have missed out entirely. The shop maybe quite small, but it is packed with so many varieties of deliciousness that you'll be hard pressed to choose. I decided that I should try to find the ultimate match for a couple of the smoky Islay single malts I have at home. The desire therefore was to find something 80+% cocoa solids, giving a rich comparison to savour the smoky peat. At this request I was presented a sample of the perfect dark choc. Within seconds I had found what I was after. Not to stop there I was then presented a sample of tobacco chocolate which contained heavily caramelised cocoa which was then mixed in with 60% choc. The result was a crisp, almost nutty result which while delicious, was not as good as the 80% I then purchased. No this is not the cheapest chocolate you will find, but it has to be close to the best in Sydney. I would certainly recommend them if good quality choc is what you are after. By the way, they also serve Sacred Grounds coffee here which I can not review as I did not drink any here, but you might want to should you drop in.

On my last day in Sydney, I woke up early and high tailed it to the store. I got there when they just opened and decided to purchase items that would not melt easily, as I had to ship them to Hawaii. The sales person behind the counter was very help in my directing me to the items that would keep during air shipment. After choosing the goodies for my family, I decided to purchase the date and marzipan chocolate bar for my honey and myself. My only disappointment was that it was too early for ice cream. Yes, even for me. If not, I would have had an ice cream sandwich. Sigh... :(

Not fair. But, with the limited budget I have, I still go to Kakawa, who not only stocks amazing little mouthfuls of chocolates in a hundred flavours, at $1.90 each, but also stock chocolate and fruit jams, chocolate CD's (I assume they are called so only due to their shape), chocolate everything! And the difference with this one is you can watch them make it behind the counter. If you don't catch them at it one day, then you'll just have to come in the next and try again. So if you're a chocolate man or woman, come and see what's happening here. So amazing.
