Took my teen for an exam and treatment plan and had about some questions about the treatment and Dr Dunn was offended by questions and responded very condescending and arrogant. I had to ask the same question multiple times and he finally answered and made my teen and I feel very uncomfortable. The receptionist who may be his wife must have overheard and started being rude as we were leaving as well. Very unprofessional and disappointing. read more

Dr. Dunn is one of the best orthodontists around. He was my orthodontist for my first round of braces, and unfortunately I had to switch when it was time for my second, full set of braces (first set I had to close a gap to make room for teeth to come down). I was dismayed to learn, after having to switch orthodontists to one closer to me in high school, that my teeth would have been much better off had I stayed with Dr. Dunn. My older brother was able to have his entire orthodontic treatment with Dr. Dunn and his teeth are much straighter than mine! read more

I was faced with not knowing what to do for my daughter do to the Covid-19 her orthodontist office has been closed sense early May . This past weekend her braces came unglued it was causing so much pain and discomfort. I was referred to orthodontist Richard E Dunn, DDS MS. By shark tooth dentistry in Exeter . I was able to take her in right away he was able to help with the problem everyone was very helpful and friendly. I would most definitely recommend that office to family and friends. Dunn Orthodontics has been around for many years and is owned and operated by Dr. Richard E. Dunn and his wife Anne. I was a transfer patient of Dr. Dunn's when I was 12 years old and received treatment from 1996 through 1999. I spent a lot of time with Dr. Dunn during my treatment phase of upper and lower orthodontics and I remember Anne as well. I never had any problems with Dr. Dunn, and he was always friendly and professional every time I met with him. On the other hand, his wife Anne is unprofessional, demanding, pushy, dismissive, rudely interrupts conversations and does not practice active listening skills. Anne Dunn is very used to getting her way and is flippant when a patient does not agree with her. For example, I sent 3 written requests for my medical records when I received treatment and called the office to follow up several times since 2021. Interestingly, my written requests were never responded to in writing and when I spoke to Anne on the phone, she asked for my personal information to locate my records and stated she would call me back on two occasions. Just recently, after my third written request, I faxed Anne, and she finally called me back last Friday (for the first time) stating that she was able to locate my dental records and quoted me a price of $285.00. I informed Anne that the price seemed excessive and not in accordance with the California Heath and Safety Codes § 123100 - 123149.5, which allows a doctor's office to charge reasonable fees based on the costs of labor to reproduce medical documents upon a patient's request, e.g., up to 0.25¢ per paper copy, up to 50¢ per microfilm copy, cost for postage, CD, Flash drive, etc. I asked Anne how many pages she was factoring in, and she replied by stating that she did not know and to do the records search, she would need $285.00 up front. I still thought this was an unreasonable amount and Anne refused to listen, interrupted me several times during our telephone conversation and accused me as an adult (mind you, I was a minor back in the 90's) of never making any payments for my extensive orthodontic treatment as a child. I disconnected the telephone call because we were not able to come to a reasonable/lawful resolution. Please understand, a medical/dental office is the repository of your medical records, no matter how old or recent they are, therefore, current and former patients have the right to access their medical records and receive them in a timely manner under State and Federal HIPPA laws, e.g., 45 CFR § 164.524, California BPC § 1684.1 and California HSC § 123100 - 123149.5. The federal law allows 30 days, whereas, CA state laws require a patient to receive their records no later than 15 business days (much shorter time frame). Also, the laws expressly state that a medical/dental office cannot excessively charge for reproductions or refuse to comply with a patient's written request for Protected Health Information if there is an unpaid balance. Interestingly, Dunn Orthodontics has been in practice for so many years, there is a reasonable expectation that they should understand State and Federal HIPPA compliance laws. As of today, Dunn Orthodontics has refused to release my records and negotiate fair and reasonable costs for the requested reproductions of my PHI. Lastly, if anyone has gone through a similar situation, you have the right to file a complaint with the Department of Consumer Affairs Dental Board of California https://www.dbc.ca.gov/consumers/complaints.shtml. Additionally, consumers have the right to file complaints with the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services Office for Civil Rights for suspected federal HIPPA noncompliance https://www.hhs.gov/hipaa/filing-a-complaint/index.html. Dr Dunn has always been very nice and helpful, but recently I've had the worst experience ever about billing. So apparently you can't make payments a day or two early because it won't fall within the dates of the 1st and 10th, they were considered late?? Now paying late fee? The office manager has been very rude, I politely asked to speak to the Dr to answer some questions and she replied, "he may or may not call you!" Now I am just waiting on my appt to get the braces removed so I can finish treatment somewhere else. read more

Dr. Dunn and his staff are amazing! Always friendly and in the two years I have been going I have never had to wait longer than 10 minuets to be seen. After 28 Months my adult braces are off and the results are AMAZING!!! I now send my daughter and can't wait to her transition. read more

This practice is the single reason I wish zero star rating was available. They are so poorly managed. Appointment making was such a hassle and they have absolutely no understanding of proper craniofacial development. I went in for the treatment (age 10) of crowded teeth and an overbite. I still have a freaking overbite, my lower dentition went back to crooked and my wisdom teeth are now MORE impacted than when I started with them. Instead of making room for all the teeth to come in a have enough room to avoid crowding, they retracted both my upper jaw and all my teeth backward. My lower jaw now has the same forward growth as a child (I'm 21). People that have straight teeth and well-erupted wisdom teeth all have forward growth (think Nicki Minaj side profile). Please don't seek treatment from this practice or any other traditional orthodontist. They don't think that the bones of the face can change in adulthood, which is a lie. Any basic anatomy course would teach you that the bones are continuously changing and growing to accommodate the different workloads we require throughout our life. How is bone-stretching possible with little to no relapse? Because our DNA allows for that kind of growth. It is not a genetic problem that leads to malocclusion. Improper posture of the tongue and axial skeleton are what cause malocclusion. Retractive braces and treatment blocks that natural growth we should be able to achieve and amplifies the problems caused by bad posture and immature swallowing/chewing. Search for orthodontists, orthtropists, and myofunctional therapists for all problems related to the jaw and teeth as well as sleep apnea and breathing issues. Make sure the doctor avoids extractions and braces at all costs. read more

Dr Dunn is a wonderful man. I really like him and he is the reason I completed work on one of my children there, but it was difficult. The office manager is rude and they are not flexible with appointments. My child missed alot of school because they would not give us later appointments UNLESS we paid an extra $50 per appt for after school hours. It is in their contract. I took my second child somewhere else. I will take my third somewhere else as well. I called for xrays to be sent to me, multiple times and never received a call back. It was just a difficult experience, customer service-wise. Dr Dunn is a very nice man though. read more

Dr Dunn is great but his office staff is terrible and poorly managed. On multiple occasions they screwed up the billing for my daughter's braces. The office manager was extremely rude about the situation and never took responsibility for their errors causing me to pay more money out of pocket. read more

I received my braces from Richard Dunn from 2011 to 2014 and I was not satisfied with his work. He initially said in the consultation there was no need for a tooth extraction, but once payment started, he wanted me to remove 2 teeth to put an expander in my mouth. I visited other orthodontists for a second opinion and they told me there was no need for the tooth removal, and so I informed him and told him I would not want any of my teeth removed. He put his ego aside, and put in the expander and I was happy for the time being. I then found out he purposefully put the expander in incorrectly as a way to make me think I needed to remove my teeth to continue my treatment. His dental assistants were able to help me while he was gone on vacation and they put the expander in correctly. When he came back from vacation, he was shocked that the expander was now in without any problem. After 3 years of braces, my teeth were still not straight. I am now at another orthodontist that is correctly doing his work and I just wish I hadn't wasted 3 years of my life and thousands of dollars with this man. Dr. Dunn is an excellent orthodontist. I had a lot of TMJ problems in my youth and he was able to get me out of pain and give me a smile that I enjoy sharing:). Now, several years later, I am in the dental field. because I was not faithful with wearing my retainer my lower teeth shifted a little. I am back in braces. I live 3 1/2 hours away but I make the journey down to visalia once a month because I trust Dr Dunn. read more
