"Easy" in terms of difficulty, this trail starts off on an…read moreeasy 1/4-mile walk down a meandering crushed-gravel path to a wooden gazebo, then down some grassy hills to the Hudson River "lookout" point. From there, you can venture into the woods for a 3/4 to a mile "easy hike" surrounded by trees, trickling stream & a few furry animals, like squirrels & chipmunks, collecting acorns. Kid friendly, this is a great walk/hike for the whole family.

And that's pretty crazy, because this park…read morewas incredibly crowded today as well, including several very large groups having some kind of party (maybe that's what attracted the gulls?). I'd say 90% of the picnic tables were full. If you're practicing social distancing, it might be tough here on a day like this, especially since all the folks in the large groups were evidently comfortable around each other. It is a nice spot for a picnic, and there's a few places for other activity, such as the basketball court. It's possible that it was very crowded today, even though it was overcast and not with a lot of fall foliage yet, because it was probably the last warm weekend for a while in this area. You do get a nice view of the Kingston-Rhinecliff bridge, and you'll eventually see some nice foliage in a few weeks (from the time I wrote this).

Falling waters is a good, easy going trail for novices and walkers. Located off 9W, it's pretty…read moreeasy to get to. As the name would suggest, there's a few small waterfalls along both ends of the trail which are pretty and good for kids. Rainfall has been be decent for them to really be going, and even at their heaviest they're not too crazy (this is not Kaaterskill). It's also right on the Hudson River, so you get good views too. If you want just a quick walk or you have a stroller, the way down to the water is the way to go (yes, you still get the obligatory waterfall). If you take the longer path, you get the bigger waterfall, sweeping views of the Hudson, and also steep up/down hills along the water. Either way this should take terribly long and isn't far from civilization, so it's a good option for families.

Certainly there wasn't a lot in bloom this late in the season, although it was difficult to ascertain whether or not that would be significantly different during peak season. It was pretty & peaceful, the grounds are extensive, and the setting overlooking the Hudson River (viewed from the back of the mansion) is nice.

However, while it's a good park to see who has perished from the town in each international war, this park offers not much more than benches to sit down and rest tired feet. I sat on one as i ate my banana split bought from the Stewarts Shops nearby but couldn't get much cozy outside of the unshaded spots not shouldering over the bench midday in mid-May and couldn't even find a trash can in the park to place my trash in after I was done. (I had to place my refuse in the trash can outside of the CVS across from the park at its south end.) Im pretty sure Im not the only one who has stopped here after coming into town. From time to time, I've seen people gather here, and even on Memorial Day, there are crowds gathered for a yearly ceremony following the parade put on by the Red Hook VFW. So it all depends on your viewpoint of those who were veterans. Theres an Old Dutch Garden and trellis arch towards the one side of this park, along with several flowering plants, but it isn't a highlight of this review because it isn't always very flowering and due to its small size doesnt stand out to popular appearance quickly.

Picnic tables are accompanied along here and the other section on the northern side with many more. Grills are provided for a plus near the picnic tables. Boat docks are used in this park for anyone's pleasure, and there's plenty of room for it to be done right. The view of the Hudson River is an incredible closeup, seeing the Kingston-Rhinecliff Bridge as the highlight and also viewing the east side of northern Dutchess County. In the distance on that side, you'll get a glimpse of the train tracks of Amtrak and occasionally CSX trains passing by. We happen to see an Amtrak heading north as we were leaving. Looking even further, especially if it's a clear day, you'll see the town of Rhinecliff to the south. It's a great place to have a get-together and to take in nature at this location!

But you may want to bring your own lawn chairs if you want to sit on something other than a picnic table. There's plenty of parking space. You're right along the river, and there's a deck area where folks lounge and fish. You have quite a view of the Kingston-Rhinecliff Bridge. If you're there when the Rhinebeck Aerodrome is open, you'll occasionally see one of their planes fly over the river to about the same latitude as the park, which is evidently their turn-around point. You'll have some very nice views of foliage during leaf-peeping time.
