This is a cute bar and probably a great choice if you love sake. There's this writing group I attend occasionally and our last session was here! They have a surprising amount of parking, especially considering how small it is inside. I live in Bellevue so it was a bit of drive. Despite it being a sake bar, I didn't actually have any alcohol. Instead, I opted for a iced barley tea and later a hot hibiscus tea. I also got a snack that was like a hot and sour trail mix. This brings me to my main gripe, which is that they didn't have any actual food options. One was corn nuts and the other what I got. Apparently, there was supposed to be a good truck that cancelled. However there isn't any food options on the menu (unless they had a separate menu - I didn't see one). The staffperson was nice but understandably a bit stressed. I've been wanting to try rice vice for a minute now, but it just slipped down the list. I'm glad I finally made it out there because it is wonderful! The service is fantastic and knowledgeable, the interior looks exactly like a Japanese sake bar (at least I think so) and the sake is delicious. Rice Vice makes their own sake while also serving Japanese varieties. There's cocktails, beer, and Japanese whiskey for you to sip on if sake isn't your thing as well. Food is limited but we were lucky and stumbled in before they started their pop up (maybe?) Nia! We shared the cucumbers, Japanese potato salad and lavash appetizers. This is a dope little spot with a good selection of Sake for people like myself who are novices & would like to sample a variety. I came here for a Fox Den Izakaya pop up & tried Rice Vice's sake version of an espresso martini & one of their house flights while waiting on the food. Now to be fair, almost all sake tastes the same to me but I'm trying to learn to distinguish them better. What I had was good though & any lover of espresso martinis should try the version here as it's so different. Love that they are using their cozy izakaya like space to host up creative pop ups like Fox Den. It was insanely busy though & id recommend coming before service starts if it's a pop up night. I'm not sure how busy it gets normally during the week. Staff were friendly even while spread thin. I need to get back out there & try some more sake on a night when there isn't a pop up & it's less busy though. read more

Rice and Vice has been on my try list and I finally tried it when I came for the fox den izayaka pop up ramen. It's a sake bar and I felt like I needed to try some sake! I saw some house brewed ones so that was pretty cool. However the cocktails looked intriguing so I had to go with that. I got the salted inu which was more of a grapefruit taste but it has some unique ingredients and the drink was phenomenal. I think it had soy sauce which sounds interesting but it made the drink so good. I also tried the gin lime rickety and that was so refreshing and had unique ingredients too. I'll definitely be back for the sake though and try a flight! The espresso martini also caught my eye but next time! They also have cool Japanese snacks and food. I wish I could give Rice Vice 6 stars. Where else do you know that brews its own Sake in the south? In addition to the multiple variations they also brew beer and distill other things like gin and shochu. The ambience is intimate and dim. It has character without going too overboard. The cat decorations and Japanese inspiration are a great touch. A lot of thought went into the space and it shows. Half of the wall behind the bar is filled with vinyl which is played during their open hours. Think MF doom and A Tribe Called Quest. It has a neighborhood bar feel with top quality drinks and the ultimate atmosphere. I tried a koji beer, some sake and a highball. All were equally good. My favorite was the cloud palace. It was chilled and unfiltered. The way an unfiltered sake tastes is unique in not only the mouthfeel but it has a distinct flavor that you'll only get this way. Rice vice has got a seriously good thing going and they deserve all the praise. I think they will be trendsetters in the US craft sake space! read more

Rice Vice is quite nice! We've been fans of Proper Sake since we moved to Nashville, and we've been anxious to experience their spirits in-person. I've actually never been to a sake-specific bar/brewery, but I am here for it. (Their menu also has plenty of other options for non-sake drinkers, and even folks who are non-alcoholic). We visited on a Friday night during a Fox Den Izakaya pop-up ... which means this place was poppin'! If you're serious about getting a bowl of such exclusive ramen, I definitely recommend planning ahead and getting here as early as possible. They're expensive, and they sell out quickly, but it was totally worth it for a special occasion! Because of the pop-up, we were unable to order a flight during our visit ... but that's just another reason to come back again soon and try more sake! Instead, our group of four shared some of their classic Diplomat, along with a few rounds of Koji beer. The interior is moody and intimate, and even though they were busy while we were there, it never got too loud. I also love all of the Japanese inspired artwork and decor. read more

My last review was in the old location. Proper Sake took this well thought out, well researched, well executed product and built out the perfect space for it. I'm all in on sake. I want to try all of it! The space is gorgeous. It's in a non-descript industrial area that is soon to be describt with the new neighbors. It's so well thought out. The wood throughout the small, extremely Japanese space is intoxicating. They have amazing, new on the seen food partners pop up. This is a hidden gem. Fun spot. I'm glad to see more intimate bar atmospheres. Not everything needs to be a full on super bar experience. Also it's fun to talk to the people behind the types of sake they have available to try as well as their beers on tap and cocktails. Do a flight of the sake. They have local versions but also their elite imports as well. Also they have bites to try while you're there. We really enjoyed Proper Sake/Rice Vice. Small place but great drinks! We came here for drinks for a friends birthday. They were very accommodating with our large group! Bartenders were super efficient! Quiet spot on a Saturday afternoon. There are drinks for everyone here, Sake drinkers, non sake drinkers, and non alcohol drinkers! The Sake as well as the highballs were great! Those in our group who don't do alcohol really enjoyed the Kombucha options! Plenty of really cool sake options here too! Super super cool spot. We went for a birthday. I love the ambiance. The decor and the music were nice. They have like 30 different types of sake. I only tried two but u liked them a lot. There was only one server but she was polite and efficient. This is a really cool spot to take on a date that's low key and swanky. There is parking and an outside patio area too. While you are permitted to bring food (party no brought stuff) they have a kitchen too. I would recommend coming here. read more

If a small sake shop with cat decor, cat magazine, and vinyl records is your jam, you'll LOVE Rice Vice. It's a very specific place with a very curated vibe, which I appreciated. The bartender was super nice and not only helped us pick a few sakes to try but also let us pick some new pages out of the cat magazines to use as menu backers. They served a handful of Japanese and other east Asian snacks, so we enjoyed a couple different flavors of chips with our sake. (If I recall correctly, the crab curry chips were outrageously good.) We recently enjoyed the new updated version of Proper Rice now known as Rice Vice and loved it even more than their former location. The indoor area is intimate with lots of wood, clean lines and mustard yellow velvet cushions. Spinning vinyls inside was an unexpected, but memorable touch. We were also surprised to find a delicious pop up outside (Foods with Metta, I'll review soon) Bartenders were extremely personable and confident to know which sakes should be iced or not. I enjoyed a gin and tonic that featured a tonic from Peninsula's kitchen and my husband had a sake created for Sean Brock's new experience Japanese inspired Yama located within Audrey. I loved seeing such local collaborations and the results were better than we imagined. Looking forward to a repeat visit soon and keeping an eye on the various pop ups outside. We had such a great time at Proper Sake on Saturday night! Locally distilled sakes? Sake flights? Dumplings folded and steamed right before our eyes? What's not to like? I'd heard about Proper Sake a while back, but hadn't tried it yet. We decided to change that Saturday night on a whim. We got the flight of sakes, which was a great introduction to Proper Sake! The sakes were all good - and very, very different. A flight was the right way to go on our first visit. The dumplings were great - even the chili oil was homemade and fresh. It's a small space, but I liked the vibe. Great service. My husband also tried a beer they had on tap, and I got a glass of my favorite sake from the flight. we had a great time, and I think we'll definitely keep Proper Sake in mind when we're next out in the area! read more

One of the cool spots that still underground and not flooded by hipsters or bachelorettes. Go ahead and get yourself the Sake Flight. Best way to tackle sake if you're new to the game. 4 different types for $13. They have a very clean, wood pallet interior. Very minimal and limited seating but can't imagine they need that much more. They also have a micro-green farm in the back (that's what all the beautiful pink lights are for). Update...Go to Proper Saké. Eat dumplings, drink sake, eat mochi, repeat endlessly. Tried the pork, shrimp, and chorizo. The pork and shrimp were just different enough to say they aren't entirely traditional, but I wish that's what traditional dumplings were like! Get a weird one, like the chorizo, and your mouth will thank you! So many props to these guys for doing just a few things VERY well. Can't wait to drop by again. read more

In my several years in Nashville, I never imagined a sake maker opening up shop. The city is growing, and allowing more unique offerings by the day. This is a fantastic addition to the city. Byron is a kind soul dedicated to making unique and flavorful sake. My personal favorite, the Grand Parlay, is based on a Belgian saison. It's rich, flavorful, sweet, fun to sip on its own. There are 5 amazing sakes available right now, and I think the price is spot on. They also have coffee mixed with sake. Way too good! If you have time on a Friday or Saturday, do it! read more

Proper Sake is very good! I had the Super Gold Sparkling Sake and Smoky Mountain. The Super Gold has a bit of a champagne flavor, but also with a savory/umami note to it. Great if you like white wines or light beers. The Smoky Mountain took the prize for best sake though. It is aged in Corsair whiskey barrels, and has the smoky flavor note that whiskey/bourbon is famous for, but without the harshness of liquor alcohol content. They had a pop-up with Solv, a locally-sourced vegan restaurant. Both dishes were great, and sake complemented their food well. It was a neat event! My only complaint is the small size of the tasting room. As this place gets more popular, it's going to be near-impossible to get a seat on the weekends. Come early and start your night there to beat the rush. read more

What a great concept. I was invited to a sake tasting here while visiting Nashville. I love hot sake but have never been a fan of cold. I found it too sweet and it would give me a headache after. The cold sakes we tasted were all delicious, although my favorite was the unfiltered one. Snacks were paired with tasting although my favorite was the flavored popcorn on each table. Brian explains everything as he serves it, what the tastes are, where the ingredients from etc. What a great concept. Wish we had something like this in LA! read more
