Despite it's surroundings (Harehills is slightly run down and nowhere near glitzy glam), it is a true diamond in the rough. Well known for it's quality and delicious dishes, it has been voted one of the Top Ten Indian Restaurants in the UK twice by the Times newspaper. The menu is an array of all the greats you would expect, at extremely competitive prices. Most starters are around £1 - £2 (apart from the fresh water prawns which are more like £5) and mains between £4 and £10. If there is something you would like which is not on the menu they will cook it for a service charge of 10%.

The former was a style choice that really shouldn't be repeated but the latter was the result, not exclusively, but definitely inclusively because of this particular Indian restaurant. Take it from someone who isn't a stranger in the ways of the Indian this place is stupendous. The quality of the meals is amazing. No task was too small for any of the team, and I interacted with 5 different employees, all of whom were extremely friendly, professional, and efficient. Chatted with Jay about world travel, and he made me feel at home. I will certainly be back if I ever make it back to Leeds. Food was delicious as well! Out steps Shai Nan Kebab! I have been coming here for Kebabs and take aways for at least 6 years and have never been dissapointed. Sadly, last year it was closed for a spell after a fire destroyed most of the inside yet the new place is bigger and better than ever. Most of the skewered kebabs are kept in the chiller fridge for you to salivate over, as well as a great selection of Pakoras/samosa/bahji's. There is nothing done to any of this food in secret- the kitchen is all open plan as well as the prep area so you can see the cleanliness of the food/utensils/staff/prep areas. The skewered kebabs are cooked fresh to order in the tandor so there is a bit of waiting for your order but hey, who doesn't appreciate a wait when you can get to see the life-cycle of the food you are going to eat. The chapatis/rotis/naans are all freshly rolled and cooked to order so again, no 'kept' food. The menu is quite accomodating for most tastes- kebabs/curries/chicken/burgers/fish/chicken portions and then a new selection of desserts and ice cream shakes. Personally, we usually go for the 'Shai Nan Special kebab' which @ £7.50 offers chicken, lamb,shish.donner and masses of salad all wrapped in a freshly griddled naan with lashings of chilli and yoghurt sauce! The Mr and i popped by here Sunday eve and got a Lamb tikka naan and I just had a craving for the donner meat and chips- absolutely spot on for both. Even after a 20 min wait we were still happy. The price list does vary favourably for takeaway against eat in and you also benefit from free poppadums & pickles! Service has always been good & knowledgable staff are always on hand to give advice and recommendations. It's the food that is the really star here though. All the food is freshly prepared and they use no artificial flavours or colourings, which make for a mouth wateringly good curry.
