Location - spectacular. Amazing views of the Rhine, if you're near a window.
Service - okay. Not impressive, but nice enough. On the night we were there, it was difficult, because a large group of diners (12+) sat down next to us right as we got our starters. Such a depressing moment, when you're really enjoying your evening and all of a sudden there's an entire busload of loud blah-blah-blah-blah three feet from you.
Side note, which I've stated before: People - don't go out to dinner in giant groups. It's lame as hell. It pisses off everyone else in the restaurant. It makes you look like assholes. Either go somewhere that has a private room, or split up your raucous group into manageable conversation "blocs".
Back to the restaurant - the food. The starters were good - wife had a steak "tatar", which we learned in Switzerland is a bit different from the "tartare" we normally expect. This was mixed with tomato sauce and served with hot sauce on the side. It was okay, but not great. My pea-mint soup was fabulous - I think it was a special, but it could have been standard menu fare.
The salad and entrees were so forgettable I'm not even positive what we had, other than to say that one of the entrees we ordered was steak-y, and the steak was tough, though cooked to the right temp. Sides were meh. The wine by the glass wasn't terribly expensive, but the pours were quite weak.
There are plenty of places for dinner in Basel that make this place not necessarily worth the time. That said, we had worse while we were in Basel. read more
