I was only there for a year. If you join when you're older they seem to ignore you, as you've grown out of the age bracket. The worst thing for me is that one day I was learning to do a front walkover- something I never succeeded at because I was really scared after this- and my teachers were supposed to be spotting me. They said that they were confident in my ability and moved on to another student, leaving me in the center of the floor, pressured to perform. I had never done a front walkover before, there was nothing to be confident in. They were not giving me anymore attention- something they frequently did in favor of my younger, more naturally inclined classmates. But I tried anyway, due to their urging. My legs tucked too far up my back as I flipped over, and I didn't catch myself with my feet. I hurt myself pretty badly by bending my back too much and then falling onto the overextension, but didn't want to let on- for whatever reason. I was a "rub some dirt in it" kid. I cried in the bathroom for like ten minutes while the worst pain calmed down, then managed to feebly get through the rest of the class. Years later, I was getting an xray for something else, and the doctor noted I have a back misalignment "found typically in gymnasts". It's from injuries like what happened to me. Luckily it's minor and doesn't have something they can really do for it, but if I had been more confident without teacher supervision like they were trying to make me, I could have really hurt myself. So, not a great experience. Not gonna do anything about it at this point, and it's been so long since- but wanted parents to be aware what this place is about.

My sons play baseball and have other activities during the spring and summer so they usually participate in gymnastics in the fall and winter. My daughter, 5, loves the developmental class. Very disappointed and would not recommend for the price we paid. We had wanted to get swimming…read moreclasses for our 7 year old, 5 year old, and 4 year old boys. It was on the pricey side but we were told we going do a group discount if we did all three in the same class so we did that. Our 7 year old has been swimming for a couple of years but we wanted him to become a stronger swimmer, our 5 year old has been swimming for a year, and the 4 year old hadn't been swimming yet on his own. We wanted, and were told, that they would be pushed. Well, after a few classes the teach wouldn't let even our 7 year old swim by himself. The 7 year old and 5 year old were asking to be able to swim and dive for toys in the pool but the teach would not let them. Even after my wife told the teacher that they have been swimming and what we wanted she wouldn't listen. The level of swimming was appropriate for our 4 year old, not the other two. This, unfortunately, was only the beginning of the issues. We went to the company complaining about this, especially considering how much we were paying for these classes. It was completely useless for our two older boys. First off it was hard to get a hold of the owner, get call backs, responses to emails, etc. She/they would respond sometimes but then if we didn't reach out we wouldn't get anything for awhile. It took us about 5 months to try to work this out and that didn't happen. They would say things like kids aren't going to learn as much in a group class. Well, if that was the case we should have been told that in the first place and we wouldn't have done a group class. But that was also blamed on us. Nothing really was done or said about the teacher ignoring our requests to let the older ones swim. They seemed intent on blaming us rather then actually fixing the issue. We would have been open to retaking the classes for the older two initially, but by the time we got to that point it was the end of summer and too late. I have numerous examples of this in some of the email back and forth which I will try to refresh myself again and update this review with that information as well. In the end their solution was to refund us 29.50 of the 200 dollars saying that it was both their fault and our fault. I don't see in anyway how it was out fault, but that was consistent with the owner trying to blame us through most of the complaint process. In summary, the class was fine for our 4 year old, but a complete waste of money and time for the older two. The customer service from the owner was non-existent since she was blaming us and the teacher ignoring our requests was very frustrating. We would have been much better off taking the kids to Frederick County pool and paying for their cheaper classes.

Both my wife and daughter have made solid friendships as a result. Our daughter's discipline, confidence and respect has improved dramatically since we started going. There is a gym parents can use while there kids take classes. They offer an after school program where they pick up your child from school and help with homework. The summer camps are a lot of fun for the kids as they go on a field trip every day. Yes, it can be pricey but the benefits you're child will get from the experience are rewarding. In other words, money well spent.

You may wonder how your kids are going to survive it but trust me - they do - because everyone is following the same set of rules. The counselors and administrative staff are super kind to each child and get to know their likes and dislikes. Kids with different abilities are welcomed with open arms if the administration feels they can safely be a part of the camp experience. This is the one camp out of the four BYM camps that offers arts experiences in addition to the immersion in nature. I hope their artistic programming will continue to develop and evolve to be inclusive to even more children, and I think it will from talking to the staff and hearing what they are working towards. Both of my kids have come home with lots of stories about enlightening experiences they've had - and new experiences seem to pop up each day as they have now been home less than a week. I am eternally grateful to BYM for giving my kids an opportunity to do something they never have, and can't wait to see what next year brings!!

Then I discover that she had been asking to call me and was told she could not. If she had called me, I might have been able to address the troubles and get something done to stop them. It was a bit traumatic for her and she has been talking about it for a year afterwards. I don't know why they didn't bother to follow up. But I would not send my child there again. I was told by the receptionist she would speak with the owners due to our situation and see if they would remove the charge October. When I received a call back I was rather shocked and honestly upset I was told we would be required to pay for the entire month of October since the owners had already posted the bill to our account. I was to stress we haven't had a session yet this month and it is only the 3rd of October so why should we pay for an entire month we would not be using. Not to mention due to health reasons my child had miss sessions twice in September and we said nothing about make up days, we also paid for the entire month of September. I take full responsibility for the missed sessions and have no complaints in paying for sessions we never essentially received. What I have a major issue with is paying for services we won't be receiving. I was told the sessions could be make up sessions but honestly no thanks. We've have two trainers in the past two months and my daughter has not learned a single new skills because all they have done the past two months is basically a free for all with the kids due to new staff. Again I understand everywhere is short staffed. What I don't understand is paying for services we will not be using. Ultimately this has cause me to decide we will not be returning to East Coast as this company is not what it was a year ago, we are all human and I could not foresee not one but two major surgeries upcoming, the lack of empathy, understanding and respect is appalling at this point. Especially when this is coming from the owner themselves. We have never been late on payments and never asked for lenience in anyway until these unfortunate events occurred. With that said our business with East Coast will end and I will enroll my daughter elsewhere once everything calms down.

The coaches encourage the girls to work together and treat each other respectfully. I love that. I do the same thing at home. I love how the coaches push the girls but do so in positive and affirming manner. I highly recommend this gym to anyone looking for cheer or gymnastics for their child. I had both my sons and daughter in gymnastics. Gymnastics provides an excellent foundation for boys in sports and will help them be more athletic and agile. This gym also offers a Ninja Warrior program which is really cool.
