Dowtown Rhodes in between work appointments with an empty belly and time to kill. I could confront the Rhodes mega shopping centre but the idea of trawling for parks makes me feel nauseous. I spotted an unassuming corner café on the way in which has I decide to trial. Pizza. Pide. Gozleme. Burgers. Jackpot. As much as I love all of the above, wheat doesn't like me so much, so I've opted for a chicken kebab salad plate ($10) - assembled with love by friendly staff who are patient with my indecision. Shredded iceberg, sliced tomato, tabhouli, Spanish onion and sliced pickles accompany a generous supply of chicken meat, adorned with a pretty zigzag of hummous. A bit like the kebab without the kebab. The guys are kind enough to let me plug in... so I can type these very words as... top 40 tunes serenade me in the background. This area is a construction mecca... they're churning out waterside apartments here at the rate of knots, so naturally, a steady stream of workers come here for their kebab fix. If I weren't relying on power, I'd be outside on the terrace with them, taking in tranquil water (Parramatta River) views, and feelin' the breeze in my hair.
