Tucked on the coastal side of Route 1, the entire town of Bethany is an oasis of vacation. With only the Sea Colony condos as a building over three stories tall, Bethany is not your typical overrun East Coast beach, but maintains a feeling of small town family friendly atmosphere that keeps vacation calm and relaxing. With private gated communities to the North, quaint small town in the middle, and Sea Colony to the South, Bethany Beach has amazing options for every family!! The main street from Route 1 greets you with the totem pole and extends directly through shops, dining, and entertainment directly to the Boardwalk. Without many cheap hotels and mostly family house rentals, you see full families with generations enjoying vacation together.

They had umbrella rentals where they handle placing it wherever you want it (they don't allow beach tents just like Rehoboth). Unlike Rehoboth they took electronic payment. The boardwalk was nice with a few shops (there are more shops along the main street). I could potentially see a parking issue if there was a large influx of people so I would recommend getting there early during peak season. So if you are looking for family friendly, relaxing, coastal town expereince this is the place.

Everyone was friendly and welcoming to us.

Something about the sprocket was bent. Ugh! Instead, I sprayed some sunblock on my arms neck and face, put on a hat, and took a walk. The beach is stunning. Flat, warm, sunny and not overly crowded for a July weekend. While the beach is not step free, they're trying hard to make it as accessible as possible with mats and ramps that can support a wheelchair. That's awesome. I did see a bunch of offroaders. Apparently, you can get a permit to bring your 4WD onto the beach. Pretty darned awesome, that is! What are those huge concrete structures? They're WWII-era bunkers! Yes, these huge installations were built to counter the fear of German U-boats invading Philadelphia via the Delaware River. While I didn't find many of the famous Cape May diamonds, I still loved walking the shoreline and taking in the view. The atmosphere during sunset was wonderful, with people gathering to watch the sun go down together. There's also a visible sunken ship. Was mostly chill until sunset of course, people gathered to watch the sunset. Restaurant right on the beach, 2 gift shops, a mini cold course, the WWIl lookout tower as well. Plenty of parking. It's definitely worth adding to your Cape May itinerary.

Easy to get to beach. Shallow calm water. There are many families and children (mid August 2024) and it was peaceful and chill. Clean gendered public toilets and outdoor shower if you need. Friendly life guards on duty. Lifeguard Trent was just wonderful to chat with and watch him help others with kindness and care. The Cape May ferry terminal is near and the ferry comes and goes. The Lion's club hosts a stand that rents umbrellas, rafts and other beach gear. They also sell hotdogs, pizza, icees and snacks. I had strawberry-lemon which was refreshingly perfect. Beyond-the-call-of-duty Lifeguard update! These pushy women sat beneath the lifeguard chair and after asking where the rental shack is about 10 times and being told--they said they couldn't walk there (it's not far) to get an umbrella. They whined and whined. Trent took the umbrella down from the lifeguard chair and set it up for them to use!!! So so generous of you Trent! I highly recommend this beach if you're looking for ease. Parking likely easier earlier in the day. I beached til evening!
