On the way to a friend's birthday party, (Apr 2026), inspiration struck: Bring classic Rheb's Candies' handmade chocolates! Hand-making chocolates since 1917, Rheb's is a 4th-generation family business, hidden on Bloomfield since 1950. It's just north of US-1 Wilkens Ave near Caton Ave, in a tiny little stand-alone building with a red tiled roof, a stone-like facade, and a hand-written red neon sign above the white corner-facing door. You'll walk in facing an L-shaped candy counter, with some Maryland-themed products and some pre-packaged treats along the other walls. Take a number by the door if there's a line. We waltzed right up to the counter at noon on a weekday :-) You can buy by-the-piece, or by-the-pound in various size boxes, pre-selected or chosen one or two at a time. We got a boxed half-pound for our friend, one of these, a few of those, plus a handful for ourselves :-), and some Maryland merch. They have so many varieties! We got milk-chocolate, dark-chocolate, white-chocolate. Nut clusters and turtles, chocolate-covered cherries, caramels, creams and buttercreams and truffles, and one "Birthday Cake" vanilla cream with multi-color candy sprinkles over a soft milk-chocolate shell. Each lovingly created original was fresh and more-than-delicious. Now, when you choose your own, you pay by weight, and our box was a little over the pre-made-half-pound $15.60. I promise you, it was worth every penny. (Remember pennies?) Our friend loved her wrapped birthday-box of Rheb's so much that she didnt share a one! She said she finished the half-pound in two days!!! I call that self-control. Our handful of singly selected candies barely made it to our home :-) You pay at the counter where you order. Rheb's Candies is open 9am-4:45pm, closed on Sundays, in the little building on Bloomfield that was originally half of the garage to their home! You can find a classic portrait photo of Louis and Esther Rheb to the left of the candy counter. There's only a handful of street parking spaces out front, but there's a little more about a block away in the neighborhood. Since Aug 2025, they have a storefront in Mt . Airy, too! Road trip!!! Rheb's has always my go-to spot for chocolates! I don't care the season: spring, summer, fall, or winter, there is always a time for chocolate! The service is always great. Pleasant ladies in their smocks taking orders. The ambiance fluctuates. During late spring and summer, it's usually pretty calm and you can walk in, grab a number, and be out with your box of goodies in a matter of minutes. During the fall and especially winter around the holidays, it can be hectic, chaotic, and crowded with folks spilling out of the door and having to endure long wait times, but, I have to say, it's worth it! The chocolates (you can choose from milk, dark,or white for some items) are fresh and made with quality ingredients that keeps folks coming year after year, including me! All in all, a family owned shop that has been around for years that produces some of the best chocolate candies in the Baltimore area. A must visit for anyone. read more

You decide what size/weight box you want to buy, and then just tell them which chocolates/truffles you want. They are know for their "Jimmy's Truffles." I wish I could give them more than 5 stars. Rhebs has been around since ancient Rome. Not really, but they've been around for a long time perfecting their magic. I grew up on their handmade chocolate candy, as they're only a few blocks from my family's home. Willy Wonka who??? Christmas time is bananas!!! Lines out the door is not unusual around the holidays. Just take a number and be patient. They make great gifts with their personal size mix boxes. My husband is hooked on their dark chocolate covered cherries. I've never actually been to their place of business but I have had their chocolates. My ex bought me a HUGE chocolates box gift for VDay, years ago. That was my first time having it and definitely left a good impression. A few years ago I discovered they have an online store where you can pick what you want. So I did that. I got a box with a mix of flavored cream chocolates (the orange cream was my favorite but they are all good) plus a separate box of their signature Jimmy Truffle (my favorite). Absolutely delicious!!! The Christmas fudge that I got today is probably the best fudge I have ever had: smooth, creamy, minty, deeply chocolaty, and not cloyingly sweet. The only reason I couldn't give 5 stars was the coldness of the two ladies there. I said hello --no greeting, nothing, no eye contact. I told them it's my first time there and I'm excited to try their legendary chocolate -- no welcome, no response. Were they human? Were they pod people? Were they bots? No one knows. To be completely honest, I am not a big fan of chocolate but I wouldn't call candy from Rheb's "just chocolate". I think they have some kind of magical power and have created a new kind of chocolate. I will admit that I am addicted! My favorite holiday is Valentine's Day solely because of Rheb's. I look forward to their chocolate covered strawberries all year long and I use the holiday as an excuse to get a 2 pound box of mixed chocolates. A year ago I found out that Rheb's delivers! At first I was upset of the $16+ shipping fee but after I received my first box, I realized it was worth every penny. Not only do they prepare your order the next business day, but they ship it to you the same day they prepared it! Excluding Sundays and major holidays, I receive my order in less than 48 hours! They wrap the box of chocolates in such lovely paper. I actually keep the paper (yes, I am a hoarder of beautiful things) for arts and crafts things. Rheb's truly is an amazing place. I have only been inside once (which is my loss and I actually grew up in Violetville) but my husband goes inside every Valentine's Day and he always tells me about the amazing service he received. If you know Rheb's, you know customers are lined up outside the door during the week of 2/14. Even when the employees are being bombarded by customers and overwhelmed, they still provide exceptional service! I wouldn't fancy myself a big candy or chocolate person (unless it's the Holidays, then all bets are off), so my inclination is to give these guys a 4, but these folks really are the best out there! This place has been here for generations and if you blink, you might just drive by it without realizing it. Just a hop, skip, and a jump from Caton Avenue lies this Baltimore staple. Walk in to the sugar-scented room, and you'll be amazed how many people cram into the little shop. It's extra busy around the usual holidays: Christmas, Mother's Day, Easter, etc. (psst: come in the day after those big days and they usually have a good sale!). I typically just grab a pre-made box of dark chocolate - they'll all be good - but sometimes I pick out my favorites: turtles, any of the creme truffles, and definitely the peanut butter cups and their take on Butterfinger (sorry Nestlé, you got nothing on Rheb's). I was looking for a candy company that made chewy nougats. Although we have a candy company locally that has been in business since the late 1800's, they do not have chewy milk chocolate nougats. I searched the web and finally found Rheb's! It was not easy finding a company that provided chewy nougat's, especially milk chocolate nougats. I emailed the company just to be sure. I am so impressed, first of all with the expediency in the delivery! I ordered these on the 3rd of February. I received them on the 5th which was today, a Saturday. They arrived in 2 days. We had 7 inches of snow in Michigan. In the stare where this company is located, they had plenty more than we had, actually, they had a blizzard. I also was able to choose the chocolates that I wanted. Unlike many companies where what you see is what you get. Literally, taking a bite and putting it back because you don't like it, or leaving half the box because you don't like dark chocolate or visa versa. I haven't mentioned the cost either. The cost is so very reasonable I wish I would have bought a 2 lb. box. I am so impressed that I am going to write on all the web sites I am currently subscribed and write a review on each one of them. I am also going to tell all my chocolate lover friends and relatives about this wonderful company. I haven't even mentioned the taste of these chocolates. Well, this is Monday, 2/7/22 and I'm finishing this review. The taste is phenomenal, pleasant and savory. The chocolate is smooth, velvety not bitter and has a great consistency that compliments the filling just right. SMELLING the chocolate I discovered the bouquet of aromatic notes, just amazing. I just ordered another box of chocolates. This time choosing the favorites out of the ones I picked out the first time. Since moving to the area I've heard that this is the place to get the best chocolate . . . . and they were right. (Except maybe for the chocolate crabs with Old Bay seasoning. Sure it's a regional thing but I do like Old Bay . . . . even in beer. A lot of odd things go great in chocolate such as bacon, lime, jalapeno, ghost chili, and even grasshoppers . . . . but 7 years here hasn't made me a true Marylander yet I guess.) But I digress. I went to the same church as the Rheb family and they gave each Sunday School kid a 1/2 lb. box of chocolates -- great marketing strategy because 67 years later they are still my go-to for fine chocolates despite having moved to Virginia over 40 years ago! (The church, Third E.U.B., is no longer in existence, so don't bother looking for it so you can send your kids to get their free Christmas allotment. :) ) Whenever I'm in the area I stop by for the best candy ever. Godiva and other luxury brands don't hold a candle to Rheb's, especially their Jimmy Truffles!!! Their chocolate and vanilla buttercreams aren't too shabby either. She told me about the chocolates and I was curious about the candies made here. I am so glad I came because if you are in Baltimore, you should definitely come see this place. I am not a big chocolate connoisseur nor do I have a big sweet tooth anymore but I do like my fix once in a while. Rhebs has chocolate creations that in my existence have never tasted before. They have so many boutique flavors that it makes it hard to make your choice to fill a box. COCONUT CLUSTERS - What the hell do they put in these??? OMGGGGG....the 2nd time I came, I bought a box twice the size and filled half the box with these insanities. CARAMEL with Sea Salt - another wow...I love caramel and the last caramel with sea salt that I tried, I asked, "why would you do that?" ANSWER SOLVED....because you have to try it RHEB style!!!! I was in your store last week and purchased 2 pounds of chocolate. The person that waited on me was very nice as I picked out my own assortment of chocolates for each 1 pound box. As I paid for the order she handed me the chocolate and I asked for a bag at which point she told me it was going to be five cents. Five cents... Really I just spent $52 on chocolate and you guys want to charge me a nickel for a bag. Realizing nickels do add up over the course of the year I'm wondering what impact it has on your bottom line versus upsetting a customer. I drove from Lutherville to purchase the candy as I do every year. Next year I will think twice as I have Wockenfuss much closer to me.
