Best chocolate I've eaten, at a grand Christmas party in Soho at the home of artist Edwina Sandys (granddaughter of Winston Churchill, and author of many art books for children as well as adults). It's comparable to Fran's of Seattle (Obama went there and now it's a thing). I went to the Bellevue location when visiting relatives. But I like Rheb's even better. read more

Rheb's sells consistently fresh, delicious chocolates. Not sure what the distinctions are with others that I enjoy aside from the fact that they have their own unique taste. I see some customers treating the ladies who work there with respect, and others who treat them poorly; this probably accounts for why they feel not worshipped when they go. I will be ever grateful to the friend who introduced me to Rheb's as one of her Christmas traditions. I was intrigued when she e-mailed a whole bunch of us on year and asked what we wanted -- couldn't we just go ourselves? Then I watched as Reply-All orders poured in. Finally, I asked if I could come with her. "Well, okay," she said, "But I don't know how much time you have. I'm usually there about three hours." Three HOURS? For a box of chocolates? Yes, three hours. And, years later, I'm still going with her, because it's just such a Baltimore Event. Time passes quickly while you're listening to the downtown accents float through the tiny chocolate-scented space: "Hey hon, hand me somma them chocolate pretzels?" "It's snowin'! Everybody go home and give your numbers to me!" "Don't mind me, I'm in my own little world over here." (To which someone responded: "Best place sometimes.") "Sometimes these cherries run heavy." (Pause.) "They do." The chocolate itself is quite good, and I love being able to buy from a local merchant. If you prefer dark, as I do, here are some options: Marzipan Logs: green-tinted almond paste Karamarsh: homemade marshmallow topped with a thin layer of buttery caramel Coconut Cluster: forget everything you think you know about coconut, and try these lightly-toasted shreds bound together with rich chocolate. Heaven! Peanut Butter Stix: a gourmet Butterfinger. Molasses Sponge: this is really innovative: a tiny matrix of spun, caramelized sugar that shatters when you bite into it. Can't believe I've waited this long to try Rheb's. This is an adorable little chocolate store that's been around since 1917. I tried a bunch of chocolates, and my two favorites were the latte truffle and coconut clusters. I also liked the nut clusters, peanut butter truffle, and chocolate-covered pretzels. Definitely a Baltimore staple. When my grandmother was alive, it was Rheb's...and only Rheb's...the Jimmy truffle to be exact. One pound will set you back $16.50 plus tax. very reasonable prices...large selection...complimentary gift wrap available...customer service is of the classic Balmer-hon-style (quick and sharp without being rude). The lines can be long, but that's because everyone who is from Baltimore knows that Godiva, Lindt, etc. just aren't as good. Never had a piece of chocolate from Rheb's bloom on me. I stared out the window of my hospital room at St. Agnes for over 2 days while waiting to give birth to my daughter. In that time, I came across the glow of a red neon sign - the sign piqued my interest and after further research on my phone, I discovered it was a candy store! Unbeknownst to me, it was one of the greatest candy stores on the planet! After several ill-fated attempts to have any one of my hospital visitors run over there to get me a treat, I vowed to pay this place a visit when I was able! Flash forward over 3 months after said hospital stay, we were early to an appointment in the St. Agnes complex and remembered the candy store! Since we were first time visitors to the store, I will admit that it was overwhelming! As mentioned, the store is small and assuming you don't visit frequently or come armed with a list of what you want, it's really hard to decide what you want to fill up your box with. They had a number system, but it wasn't being used on the day we visited (maybe because it was a weekday?). Instead, they helped customer based on the order they came in the door. We had to peak in between people for several minutes to determine what candies we wanted, but were still pretty undecided when our turn came. I still don't remember the flavors we got (a vast assortment of the case though), but everything I have eaten so far has been pure chocolatey bliss! Next time I am coming prepared and armed with a list of what I want (available from the website or you can pick up a small menu in the store)! And yes, I think that visit will be occurring very shortly! Part of me is sad that I am just now discovering this place, but the other part is thankful due to the number of times I visited St. Agnes and was in the proximity of Rheb's during my pregnancy. Order online if you want candy near a holiday for lines will be out the door and around the corner and parking is limited. I think the lines are apart of the tradition. JIMMY TRUFFLES! That's all. Okay, maybe not. Over the years, we've been lucky enough to get some dark chocolate wrapped jimmy truffles (less jimmies but still very tasty) and even some Ravens color scheme jimmies. I've been bringing these home for friends and family, and they've all loved it. This place has been a tradition in my family ever since I can remember. One word: truffles. Of course, everything has been delicious, but the truffles take the cake. Not sure how they make their chocolate so delicious, but they do. The chocolate coins are also wonderful. We even did Rheb's chocolates for wedding favors (4 to a box... we used our own boxes though). They were a huge hit; none were left on the tables. Not a single one was found! My aunt said she checked specifically. haha. If you want to get these for the holiday season, you best order ahead of get there a couple hours early on a weekend (like, a few hours before opening to stand in line). Rheb's is a great family place. My mom's been going here since the 80s and we go every Christmas to buy boxes of chocolate for family members and gifts. It's always really crowded and there's never enough parking. You have to park down the street in a lot because there isn't parking outside the store. We don't bother with the "choose your own" mixes because honestly, the wait isn't worth it. You can be there for hours if you go on the wrong weekend. Hit up the premade express line on the left when you walk in - you can grab as many boxes as you want. Milk, Dark, Mixed, all nuts, no nuts.. they've got it! And get some of their non-pareils too. Their dark chocolate is heaven! Prices keep going up each year, so be prepared for an increase. The ladies are always friendly and keep it moving as quick as they can. It's an institution! read more

The review before complained about customer service.....I take issue with that because I have been going there for over 45 years and lived on their street and the owners and all their employees(mostly long term ones) and even the ones up here at Kenilworth Mall (where they have a stand) are delightful. I lived in Maryland the majority of my life. I even worked in Baltimore, and somehow missed learning about Rhebs until AFTER I had moved away. A friend gave this chocolate out as a wedding gift for her wedding several years ago, and I was HOOKED. I usually have these shipped to me a couple times a year to get my fix, but I haven't ever tried during the summer. I live in Texas, and it is HOT. I was a little nervous about them arriving as chocolate soup, but I shouldn't have been. They were packed in dry ice. The Rhebs candy boxes were cold, the chocolates were slightly chilled but not cold or frozen. Just perfect. I taste tested 5 just to be sure. For reference they were sitting outside on my front porch in full sun all day today while I was at work (it's 95 degrees today). I learned of this place's existence a long time ago from my mother. She used to get boxes of the jimmy truffles from my dad on special occasions, and I'd sneak them here and there. I came here for a treat for my birthday last week, and these chocolates are just as amazing as I remembered. I got half a 1lb box of jimmy truffles and half milk chocolate caramels, along with a small bag of milk chocolate marshmallows. ALL of them were heavenly. This place is nothing short of amazing. The service was just fine, quick and decently friendly, and IMO, prices are completely reasonable. The jimmy chocolates have the same taste as they did 10+ years ago when my mom used to get them, which is great because they were already perfect back then, and still are. I stopped by last month to get my mother some candy for Christmas. The place smells like chocolate covered utopia! I was waited on right away. I got a one pound box of assorted dark chocolates for my mother. They were presented in a pretty shiny red box. For myself, I got 2 milk chocolate vanilla buttercreams and 2 milk chocolate covered cherries for the ride home. Well, I feel as if I have found a little hidden treasure... But the other reviewer, justin p, was not kidding--it is really hidden. It took me a long time to find it! You can not see it from Wilkens Ave.--once you turn off Caton, you have to make the next right- down the small street/alley next to the Vein Center building. It is tucked at the rear of the alley in a cute house with VERY limited parking. I was lucky I got there at a time they were not busy. Anyway, it is worth the hunt and any hassles, cuz this place is just chock full of goodies. I am a chocolate freak--dark only thank you very much-- but they have milk versions of all they make in case you like that pale, anemic imitation of the real thing...smile. Since it is a difficult drive for me and I don't know when I will be able to make the trip again, I bought enough for a year--well, ok maybe that's a bit of an exaggeration, but I did get a sampling of about half of their pieces. Naturally, the minute I got back home, I couldn't resist digging in and trying a few--ok, several...I was most pleased with every one. And I am a bit of a chocolate snob. I have been long deprived cuz I refuse to compromise on quality and I don't consider store stuff to be edible. On the other hand, the really top end choices are often so bizarre and strange (I really don't want chili or lavendar or the" back legs of a booshoo bird" in my chocolate please...) so I just do without--until now. Now, I am set for life (hopefully they stay open that long, but since they have apparently been open for forever, I am sure they will go on and on.... Now there were 2 negatives, but I am not knocking down the rating as a result, since I went there strictly for the chocolate. First I did not care for the fruit slices (jellies) and looking at the ingredients, I can see why--corn syrup and artificial colors...not my idea of good goodies. And secondly the service is very "cold" --not impolite at all, just not helpful in any way. Since this was my first time, I was looking for some information about the pieces and the 2 women there seemed rather uninterested in helping out a newbie. I guess they have their regulars and are not accustomed to someone coming in who does not know ahead of time how many pieces they are going to buy, or what is in the pieces, etc etc. I was very thankful there was no one else in the shop when I started ordering, or I would have felt too intimidated to buy what I did as I felt each question was a bit of an imposition. Next time, I will see if I can do an advanced phone or internet order and just pick up the stuff already packaged when I get there. So, the bottom line is that if you like high end, traditional chocolate candy, this is a great place! read more

Rheb's is the best you can get. I don't remember my family buying any other candy then Rheb's. When I was a child, I would beg for the marzipan half covered with chocolate as soon as the box was opened, and I always got it. I am a chocoholic and judge other chocolates I taste against Rheb's. The only other chocolate I liked as a kid was Mary Sue Easter eggs, which were made just around the corner from Rheb's and received only once a year. My mom worked next door to this place in the 70s. I grew up in the 90s going to MD with her every year. This was always a staple. We've driven from the Rockville MD area up to Rhebs just for their chocolate. I've waited for 10 tickets ahead of me before being able to purchase. it in NO WAY bothers me though, instead the entire time I am just excited to eat the candy!! This place is like no other, everyone who is there purchasing is just as in love with the candy. They even sold us chocolate bricks (by the pound) for some candy we wanted to make on our own.
