I am so sad for myself that Bo is retiring soon, but he has good things to say about the dentist who will be replacing him. Bo is quite an entertaining character as well as being an excellent dentist who explains everything. I have had great service from his gentle and patient hygienist and his office staff, to whom I have always felt like I was a real person and not simply a name on a chart or spreadsheet. I assume they'll be staying on. I'm guessing most of the gorgeous art books will go with Dr Bo, but the lobby will still be beautifully decorated and there's a harbor view from the chairs, or a home improvement channel on the overhead TV. I had moved to the island a few months before Covid, and trying to set up an appointment as a new patient after the stay-at-home order was lifted was extremely difficult. Offices across the island had to cancel and reschedule hundreds of appointments to accommodate their established patients - resulting in wait-lists up to 18 months long. Fortunately, Annie (office administrator) has the foresight to set a few new patient appointment slots aside, and was able to pencil me in. On the phone and in person, Annie showed such compassion and care, you could almost hear her smile behind her mask. Cindy, the dental assistant, took great care to ensure my comfortability while in the chair as we shared our 'coming to the island' stories. And Dr. Wakeman was a refreshing change of pace from the staunch, almost cold, dentists of my past. He's funny, accessible, and the way he sang the praises of his staff was heartwarming. With increased safety protocols in place (double masks, paper gowns, sanitizer pens/clipboards, barriers at reception, gloves for patients), I felt very safe in what could be a vulnerable environment.
