So I've been coming here for about 3 years and always a great meal to include that I've catered several parties from here--always a hit! Well today we came for a Sunday usual and were sat down quickly as always--I immediately knew something was different. Hots chips but bland salsa. New menus, a few new booths, and to our surprise no white sauce. Asked the waiter and exactly what I thought--new management. Well that's always a little off -- we took our chances and ordered our usual items. Carnitas, fajita quesadillas, quesabirria, street tacos (Al pastor y carnitas) --well the taste was way different--not terrible food but definitely not the same food. This was expected once we heard new management because I mean you're not going to have the recipes but the rice was a little overcooked, the consomme was oily, the tacos not the same flavor, the carnitas had more tomatillo and oil than carnitas. The location was still clean and friendly--quick service. But I may not be making my routine Sunday dinners here. read more

Rey Azteca, Mary Washington location. We've eaten at the Carl D. Silver location numerous times. It has officially become our favorite Mexican restaurant. We actually live closer to the Mary Washington location, so we decided to give it a try. Different vibe. It was really clean (both locations are). They brought out a basket of hot chips, salsa and that white mayo dip, that you can only find at some Virginia Mexican restaurants, that in my opinion, is absolutely disgusting (my weird husband loves it!) The other location doesn't bring that to the table, which I am good with. Ordered tableside guacamole for $10.99. It is not made tableside, which the waitress informed us of. I said, 'As long as it didn't come from a jar, because I only like fresh guac'. She said that it wasn't from a jar. When it came, it didn't look fresh, and tasted like perhaps it was jarred guacamole with some chunky avocado and tomato added in. It also wasn't anywhere near the amount that we received when we got fresh, true, tableside guacamole from the other location. Furthermore, it didn't taste good at all. We were going to suck it up, but I went ahead and brought it to the attention of our waitress. She then said that they make a big batch, and just scoop it out. But she was kind enough to take it off our bill. I feel like if you are paying $11 for a bowl of "tableside" guacamole, then that's what you should get. Tableside. Otherwise, drop the price. For our entree, we ordered the Fajitas Texanas for one. It was hot and enjoyable overall. It wasn't as seasoned, as the fajitas at the other location, and the steak was more rubbery. I drove by this place so many times and finally decided to give it try and as a first time eater here and someone who is a Texan and was raised off Tex-Mex, I was very pleased!!! Why am i paying SEVEN DOLLARS for SIX OUNCES of the white sauce that i used to get for free???? and it tastes BAD! why am i paying NINE DOLLARS for queso when you're giving me A SMALLER PORTION????? so frustrating because this used to be our go to mexican place. now we're not going back. why should we?? the food tastes worse and i'm paying more money for it! i get that times are tough and restaurants aren't making as much as they used to, but this is really not the way to fix that. read more

In short, Rey Azteca did not disappoint and is worth visiting. The restaurant opened in December 2020 and it definitely looks like a lot of thought and preparation was put into opening it. Rey Azteca is now where a sports bar used to be. While there's not much the two have in common, the new owners definitely gave the restaurant a cheery feel with brightly colored walls and Mexican tile on the wall. The sports bar's TVs are still around and are a good balance to the Latin music playing in the restaurant. As soon as you're seated, chips and salsa are served. I really liked that the restaurant uses corn chips, not the super white and thin kind; these are true yellow corn chips. The salsa was good but the best part of it was the "salsa blanca" (white sauce) the chips are also served with. The sauce is house made and has a tangy, peppery, and sweet kick to it. I had never had anything like it. I was basically sold on the restaurant after eating all the chips and all the salsas. The menu is extensive, so check it out before visiting. They have breakfast-like items--perfect for brunch on weekends. They also have a good selection of lunch specials, which average $9-10 an entree. I ordered the lunch chicken flautas and it was filling. My entree was served with yellow rice, lettuce, and guacamole. The two lightly fried flautas were exquisite and had a thin queso poured over them. My companion had Lunch #12, which consisted of a chicken flauta and a beef enchilada. His dish was served with yellow rice and beans. We both thoroughly enjoyed our meals and think we've found a local favorite. There is ample parking in the shopping center. The restaurant has a bar area and a room for (possibly) private dining. There's also an outdoor patio area, perfect for happy hour or al fresco dining when the weather is warm. The restaurant is kept very clean and the restrooms are also maintained very well (I can only speak to the ladies restroom). read more

The food was great! The service... that depends on how you feel about being accused of walking out on your check and the waitress walking to your guest in the parking lot and charging their card after you already paid with the electronic payment system. She also made several inappropriate statements to my guest while I was walking to the ice cream shop. The system gave me a thank you clearance, sent me a receipt, and took the money out of my account. My guest called me confused and I walked back to the restaurant. When I confronted the waitress, she said she didn't have the receipt I used to pay and wouldn't listen to me explaining how I paid and left her over a 20% tip. I asked for a manager and she said "I am the bar manager." I explained I need a manager who understands the point of sale system. The limited English speaking house manager handled it very well and refunded my guest who was charged. I asked if they receive electronic payments from the barcodes at the bottom of their checks and he said yes. I asked if the waitress would get a tip and he said yes. So I asked if I was good to leave and he said yes. The waitress apparently told my guest that we didn't look like the "type of people to walk out on a check"- we aren't Jennifer! Whenever I order shrimp fajitas or tacos, I always end up with like five shrimp to accommodate that meal. Disappointing right? Well Rey's Azteca doubled that in size and amount and I have shrimp to take home. The food was good. I did not get to finish with the heat and all. However, if you have a thing for Mexican restaurants, then I recommend Rey's. The frozen Mango margarita was pretty mango-eeee lol but where was the liquor? frozen drinks always give me a buzz but the buzz i caught was from the itis and needing a nap. Dined in for lunch today. Host and waitress were very nice. Asked for a few minutes to decide what we wanted and ended up waiting for about 15 minutes before we were asked again. My wife and I both ordered the lunch fajitas and I also ordered a beef enchilada. The food came in a reasonable amount of time. The fajitas were not remarkable and the guacamole was not fresh. They forgot to make my beef enchilada, but it came very quickly when reminded; however there was no beef in it. I politely declined a replacement and they removed it from the bill without question. They accidentally charged our card for someone else's order that was 4 times our lunch total. They refunded and were very apologetic, and I hope to see the refund within the next 2 weeks. Only gets 2 stars because of the friendliness and the food was at least edible. I don't think we will be returning. read more

We had never had that problem so we asked to speak to the manager. Nice inside, seems like a pretty standard Hispanic restaurant with wall paintings, pictures, etc. showing off the cultural influence. Daniel was our server and extremely welcoming/attentive. Food wasn't bad but it seems all the east coast Hispanic restaurants love using liquid queso with all their burritos and such. The tacos are excellent and usually are hard to mess up with 4 basic ingredients (corn tortilla, meat, onion and cilantro). The taquitos are basic as well. Would possibly return. read more

The food is OK, nothing to write home about. Tonight was my second visit. Drove one hour from Fort Washington, MD to go celebrate a friend's birthday. The service was mediocre, we ordered two appetizers for the table and it came together with our diner, not once the server came back to check on us to make sure everyone had gotten what we had ordered, or it was to our satisfaction. We finished our meals and finally the server showed up. I told the server we had a birthday at our table and asked her to sing happy birthday for our friend and the server said yes (I figured they will do it when we order desert), we ordered desert and our plates still had not been cleared off the table, we had to ask our server to clear it. When desert came, they never sang happy birthday for our friend and when I asked the server, she replied that the manager had said no to singing, because they were short staffed. This was very surprising to me so I asked the server to ask the manager to come to the table and a gentleman named Antonio came to the table and I asked why he had declined a client's request to sing happy birthday and his reply was: This restaurant does not do that, the owners of the restaurant had instructed us not to sign happy birthdays because they are servers, not entertainers". This was really disappointing, so if you have a birthday celebrations and expect them to sing for the birthday guest, this is not the place. Then came the desert, this added to our disappointment. I am very picky when it comes to Mexican food; however, this is so far the best I've had in Fredericksburg. The restaurant was clean and spacious. Our server was friendly and attentive. My husband started off with a skinny margarita which he commented tasted like water and promptly asked the server to replace with a regular margarita which was somewhat better. My frozen raspberry margarita had good flavor; however, it was more runny than frozen. My husband's carnitas were full of spicy flavors and my beef tacos were flavorful. When we received the check we were a bit surprised to still see the skinny margarita still on bill being that we sent it back. Rey Azteca is great and is where you'll find the best street tacos in town. They're only two bucks on Tuesdays. You can get chicken, steak, Al Pastore (pork with pineapple), and chorizo. I alternate between steak and Al Pastore. The rest of the menu is huge. You can also mix and match. Since they're street tacos, they're small. The burritos are not what you get at Taco Bell. They're huge and you will have to knife-and-fork them. When I saw them open in 2020, my first thought was, "This place is going to die for opening during a pandemic." It replaced a restaurant that was killed by the pandemic. It took a few months before I went inside and wow. I think they're thriving. The people are really nice with a few holdovers from the previous establishment. I've gone several times and I'm overwhelmed by the hospitality of Rueben, Nancy, Olivia, Dan, Jennifer, etc. If you have a problem with your food, say something and they'll fix it. Most of the staff is from south of the border and they are great people. Keep in mind this is Tex-Mex, not solely Mexican. read more

Don't let the strip mall vibe on the outside fool you. Inside is a large dining room with plenty of seating and a comfortable atmosphere. Our waiter was a young man named John who was very attentive and personable. Started out with drinks, a michelada and a sangria. Michelada was excellent although they added ice lol. Sangria had fresh fruit and was in a good size glass. As mentioned by others the chips were a bit heartier than other places and the salsa was good. The white sauce was a different change and was very good. We menu was quite large. Not having been here before we decided could not go wrong with fajitas. We ordered the Fajitas Texanas for 2. I was going to order some other Ala carte items but was assured that they would it be needed. This was an understatement. We received a sizzling mound of shrimp, steak and chicken with plenty of peppers and onions and tomatoes. We each received a plate of refried beans and rice. The beans were excellent. They have another new location in central park. I came for dinner with my boyfriend at the new location. It was on a Wednesday so it wasn't busy. Staff was very quick to help and fairly friendly. We ordered our food and they brought out chips and a very tiny size of salsa. Before before you as for more chips and salsa as they will charge you $3.00 for it. I've tried many Mexican restaurants in the area. This restaurant has the best tasting Mexican dishes hands down. I eat here at least once a week. I ask for Daniel for my server. He makes the best guacamole right at your table with what ever ingredients you want added. The portion size is more than enough for four. They have a very large selection of entrées and combination dishes. I just had their chicken chimichanga. The taste was so flavorful. The portions are huge and I have to ask for a container to go.
