First time visiting Rey Azteca and was pleasantly surprised with the inside ambiance; wall murals, brightly painted dining tables even small rooftop awnings above some of the tables. Outside seating available weather permitting along with decorative blow ups for the little ones to take a picture with . We were warmly welcomed and shown to a table in the back as we were a party of 8. Our server Marisol was fantastic. She was welcoming and very patient (as some of us could not make a decision). Marisol was extremely attentive throughout our visit constantly checking in even though she had several tables to serve. Served complimentary chips and salsa to begin with. The food fare is your typical Mexican cuisine: enchiladas, fajitas, burritos, quesadillas, carne asada, soups etc. we started off with the spicy guacamole which was delicious and lived up to its name. There's even a children's menu available for the less adventurous. The food dishes were all well portioned and reasonably priced. There's a full bar available as well. Service is anywhere from great to terrible, depending on who you get. We've had more good service than bad, but when it is bad, it is really bad - like you need to ask any random employee to get you a water refill or get you your check. We have been here before and had the best experience. This place always looks amazing. Tonight we brought a friend with us and we ordered queso fundido and it came to the table burnt. It looked nothing like the picture on the menu. When we told the waitress she took it back and we just wanted one not burnt. She came back and told us they don't want to make us another one because we would send it back too. So we asked for just queso plain, it came to the table cold. The service is great but so far the quality of food is questionable. Let's see how the rest of the meal turns out. Let's see if a manager comes by the table since a food item was sent back. The Charlotte area has a plethora of smaller Americanized Mexican restaurants and most of them are pretty similar. Chips and salsa while you look at the menu. The menu is a study of how many different ways you can put chicken or beef inside of a tortilla shell of some sort. Rice and beans on the side. And served with a Mexican beer or a margarita. Most of them are so similar that they could almost be considered a chain. Rey Azteca brings that to the Fort Mill area, where Tryon crosses over Lake Wylie into South Carolina. In a strip mall, they have a couple of signs out front. inside, it's the same as any other "Ameri-Mexican" I've eaten at. Booths along the walls, tables in the center and such. The menu has some lunch and dinner specials. Chips were crisp and warm. Salsa wasn't too thin. The food arrived quite hot and with a good portion. Not too spicy, not too bland. I cleared the plate. She asked what was wrong and we sent the drinks back and ordered a Lime Margarita($7.99) and Dos Equis Larger, as both are pictured and displayed on the menu. The waitress delivered my Margarita which still tasted like juice and delivered an Amber Dos Equis. She stated after bringing it to him That they didn't have the Larger. WTF?! Why didn't you explain that when we ordered it and repeated himself three times! We ordered chimichanga, tacos and two orders of quesos. The food was mediocre at best. Chips were stale and salsa lacked flavor. We ate it and moved on. The waitress brought the check and the 1/2 pitcher still appeared! We asked why my Lome Margarita didn't appear and she voiced jay the manager has to charge us for the pitcher as we drank some. We both tasted it! If I had known it would be a problem, I would have photographed it. Further, as I dine out several times a week, I have never heard of such when a drink is made poorly! We asked to speak to the manager who wouldn't come over and speak to us so hopefully, he sees this! Don't dine here you will regret it! Try Aztec Grill right up the street! My brother is local and he will be spreading the word about the poor service, basic, slightly palatable food, and horrible cocktails, which you will be charged for! You've been warned! My family and I visit this restaurant frequently, or at least we used to until the quality of food has forced us to make the conscious decision to drive further away for other Mexican alternatives. The past several visits, the burritos have been bathed in meat grease. And this is really gross. The burrito arrives with enough grease around it to literally spoon 6-10 spoonfuls out of the plate. I've started sending it back but the next visit, the same plate arrives again. So my private criticism has obviously had no impact on the product. Great little hidden joint just across Buster Boyd Bridge in SC. Just like most all Mexican Restaurants they start you off with Chips & Salsa. The salsa was great! It was well favored with the right amount of kick. It you don't like spicy this my be a little hot. I ordered the combination #18 (burrito, taco, rice & beans). The ground beef was seasoned well. They were a little skimpy on the rice. The beans were favored as well and weren't dry. My wife ordered the Pollo Con Crema. It was really good as well. The chicken was well seasoned & grilled perfectly. The Crema was good, maybe a little heavy on the sour cream size. Again they were a little skimpy on the rice. Overall.
