    Sights on the bike trail

Fun family activity in the heart of Cape May. Not too strenuous. It a fast 2 miles out and back with two pit stops. First pit stop at the canal with a brief, funny, informative, historic talk. This takes place while employees turn the rail bikes around. Second pit stop is at the Garrett Family preserve. What a beautiful spot! Five miles of well maintained, and blazed, hiking trails. Theresa a gazebo with picnic tables. Plenty of parking. Plaques to read about the preserve and an audio self guided tour. Hop back on the rails and head back to the train station! Employees are funny, friendly, and they offer to take photos for you. There are 3-4 time slots a day, and moonlight options, too. We all commented we wished it were a longer trip!

The most scenic part where the guides will take your groups photo.

First, check in was quick and easy. The people who worked there including the guides were very nice and friendly people. Even the other riders were great, everyone there seemed to truly enjoy it. The peddling was mostly easy but I would be lying if I said we " felt it" afterwards. I dont think I would have wanted to do more than the 4 miles. The only negative thing I could say? The price was a little high because there wasn't much " nature" involved. The shrubbery was really overgrown and there was not much to see. So you really have to go for what it is, a nice bike ride with friends. There are restrooms for your use, and you do get to stop twice to rest and learn a few facts about the area. We enjoyed ourselves.

One of the great novelty tourist things that has sprung up out of nowhere the last few years is railbiking. Don't know what this is? It looks something like this: commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Valley_Railroad_Rail_Bike_at_Goodspeed_Station_October_2019.jpg There are a few companies that are larger (tongue and cheek because even the "large" ones are still small with only a few locations) and some tourist railroads do it in house. Overall though, most of the tourist railroads that host this are either abandoned, don't offer a lot of rides or they are in the middle of nowhere. The process here is very simple. Go to the Revolution Rail website (www.revrail.com), find a location, book a date/time, read the FAQ, pay and you're done. Day of in Cape May you show up at the old train station now bus station/visitors center and RR has their check in area to the far left inside, sign a waiver and that's it. You ride out two miles to the Cape May Canal where the railbikes are turned around and you ride back. While waiting for the bikes to get turned around the staff will give you some wiki style facts/trivia regarding some of the history of the area. On the way back you make a brief stop at the Garrett Family Preserve where you get a brief overview of how/why the preserve was set up and how it helps the large annual bird/insect migration that occurs in the area. A few pros and cons with Revolution Rail in Cape May: As everybody knows, parking in Cape May is horrific. You've got a pay lot across the street from the welcome station. Download the parking app, pay on their site or have a literal roll of quarters because you'll need it. If that lot is full, I guess keep on searching. If you know your history, trains haven't been run here in a decade and unless a literal miracle occurs they never will again. Why? When you get to the turn around point you'll see a swing bridge over the Cape May Canal. The bridge was rendered inoperable by Hurricane Sandy a decade ago. Even before that time, train service to Cape May by Cape May Seashore Lines was spotty at best. The scenery really isn't that scenic. Two abandoned rail cars and past that it's mostly just overgrown trees, weeds, bush and shrubs. The best part is the Garrett Family Preserve. That area is beautiful and more than makes up for the weeds. The ride compared to other locations that RR offers or other companies offer is on the short side. If the Cape May Canal swing bridge was operable the ride here would be exponentially longer. Door to door here was about 85 minutes. Let me finish by saying that all of the staff we encountered were great and common sense safety is definitely a solid theme. Rail Bikes are one of those weird things where you need to remember that it's all about the experience and overall the experience here is great. Bring a water bottle, sunscreen, bug spray and get on your bikes and ride.

Experienced this today with my wife, had a blast, road a improvised rail car, a nice piece of engineering through a nature preserve and natural marsh. Price was reasonable, $88 for the two of us. The entire experience was a little more than 2hrs. If you are ever in Cape May Nj. give it a try, enjoy

This was by far the best surprise of our short trip to Cape May. We met people when we first got down who recommended the tour and we had no idea that it was even down here. It is something that we had always wanted to do but thought that it was only in the mountains, so you could imagine our excitement when we found out we could add it to our tour de Cape May. The guides were wonderful, funny, knowledgeable, helpful, and gracious. My only wish is that it was longer, but unless you think you could perro fast enough to not sink into the canal the 4 mile round trip is the max. The stop at the Garrett Nature Preserve was a real hidden gem and we will definitely make sure to do the 5 mile hike through the preserve on our next trip. We plan to come back in the fall to see the butterflies and bird migration. This is a must for the full Cape May experience

Great tour guide and fun way to spend an hour while learning some historical facts about Cape May. I loved this but wish the ride was longer

Did the 8am tour today and had a great time. Well organized, informative and a wonderful start to our day. Learned some new things about Cape May too.

We had to register through the company and sign waivers beforehand before we could rent out the Segway for the tour. I was so nervous because I wasn't 100% happy about driving the Segway in Center city Philadelphia traffic- Philly drivers are the worse! ( I know cause I am one of them!) So we got assigned our Segway and had about 5 minutes to practice and feel comfortable before going out on the street. I wasn't feeling comfortable and I was so scared but I sucked it up and headed out on the road. It was kinda cool zipping through the different streets and getting some information about some of the older buildings and learning about my city a little more. We had a chance to learn about Philadelphia and also had a chance to stop at a sandwich shop I never been to before and had a nice lunch on the spot when we had a chance to take a break. I was nervous the whole time I road the Segway and had the picture of me getting bumped off the road and getting hurt many times- as I rode the Segway I was gripping it so hard my hands were throbbing. Before no time we were racing into the end of the tour and I was kissing the ground that we made it back. That was marked off my to-do list and never again for me.

Uber will always get 5 stars from me…read more Living in one of the 5th largest cities in the U.S., it is often hard, no, impossible to be anything other than a nameless face in a crowd, an otherwise anonymous customer number or just a delivery address. As many issues that Philly might have, there is an unfettered joy and sense of adventure for me with the random, chance encounters the city offers. As I am conveyed back and forth to the South Street vet with my sick little white cat, once again I get to have some funny, interesting, happy, poignant and occasionally simply dull, yawning interactions with Uber's legions of drivers. I love getting a minute peek into the thoughts and lives of these drivers who are so often taken for granted and treated like robots. Sure, some of these folx have complicated lives, second and third jobs and want nothing more to get through their shift in peace and quiet. As an introvert, I always test the conversational waters when I step into an Uber vehicle. If the driver answers me in monosyllables, I take it he or she simply wants to drive, thus I keep to myself. Some drivers are possibly bored yet enthused about chatting so as a result I have been privileged to learn about their families, their country of origin, their snack preferences, some of the odd/interesting/pesky passengers they've conveyed, music tastes and most of all-how connected everyone of us really are. Almost as good, since I don't drive, is having the little kid in me awakened and absolutely thrilled at going out for a car ride. (Sure, it isn't free but the little boy in me never even considers that. He simply has a blast seeing the city from a vehicle...) While Uber is a business, it would be nothing without its drivers. Sure, sometimes they are slow to arrive or they flip your trip to another driver. From time to time, a driver is having a rotten day and acts out a bit. Examine your conscience. Haven't you had similar days or nights, no matter what you do for a living? Rather than bitching and moaning, treat your Uber ride as a way to connect with someone you'd probably never meet in your regular social circle. See your driver like the unique, silly, grouchy, aspiring, single parenting, hard working, dream filled human being they are; under the t-shirt, under the jacket, under the trucker's cap, behind the knock off shades-they are someone just like you.
