RDC is the best, and the new owners are wonderful and responsive. We just finished our first recital since shutdown and it was really well-organized and fun for the kids, and the dancers were incredible. I am so impressed by the teachers my daughter has had and their kindness and talent. Please, please note that the negative reviews were doing the lockdown. The previous owner was forced to first close down half the studio due to not getting a covid relief loan and then eventually sold it to the 2 (awesome) guys running it now. Nothing about the situation was ideal and we went through it too, but what was happening then is *not* reflective of anything current. My daughter has been taking ballet for over 3 years and she is 6 years old now. We started with another teacher that we absolutely loved for 2 years but she moved onto private lessons so we looked into several studios in the area. RDC was very well reviewed, close to home and we wanted to explore my daughters talent in a place that would have her on track to pursue this long term. Choosing RDC was one of the best decisions we made. Ms. Kelley was her first teacher for Ballet Primary A and she is a phenomenal teacher. Her passion for teaching and dance shines. My daughter loved going to her class every week. When my daughter was moved up to Primary B the only class that was offered even close to our schedule was at 4:30 during the week. I am a pretty "hands-on" mom and, even though I could have had my mom take her to class, I would have missed out. The day we found out, another parent that was concerned about her daughter being able to attend the class and I ran into Julie, one of the owners, and she asked us if she could do anything for us. I mentioned the dilemma & she said she would see what she could do. A few days later and there was a class available for Saturday! I was so ecstatic and appreciative. Miss Charlotte is the teacher and she is amazing with the kids, full of energy and this is after some would consider a full day of teaching. In addition to this incident, EVERY SINGLE TIME I see Julie she asks how I'm doing, shares a joke or acknowledges me in some way, no matter how busy she is. My daughter loves her so much that she asked me the other day if she could invite her to her birthday in a year, LOL. Julie has a big heart and instills that in her studio by having community service projects every month for the dancers and their guardians to get involved. She also teaches dance and includes those with physical & learning disabilities, which touches my heart, as I have family with learning disabilities. Yes, there are rules - just like with any class. There are guidelines/dresscodes for ballet leotards, etc. and you are expected to show up on time. There is a 10 minute leeway however, if you are later to class your child may not get the proper stretching in/warm up and that could be detrimental to your child - not to mention it is a distraction to the other dancers. I am well aware that things come up but you can make up the missed class - even by trying out another class all together! I saw someone place a bad review because you are not allowed to sit in class - I have had it both ways and trust me - your child is far less distracted by you not sitting in the class & this way gets a better dance education. And in the younger classes the student's family is invited to sit in for the last 10 minutes! Otherwise there are screens to watch from and in some studios, windows (which can be a distraction as well if you are spotted, LOL). As for the recitals, they were a big reason why we chose RDC! I wanted my daughter to be able to perform and have our friends and family see how much she's progressed over the years. I tear up thinking about seeing her on stage and how proud I am. The costumes are pricey but it includes professional photos & it is only once a year if you are only performing in the spring (see photo posted). We take advantage of the opportunity and sign up for the Winter Holiday recital as well, a great time to try another class. This year my daughter is in a jazz routine and she loves it! We love RDC and everyone that we have met through it! My daughter and I have made wonderful, hopefully, life-long friends and she has progressed with her dancing so much!!! Good classes, but BEWARE the voluminous recital charges! Recital fee of $54, $15 per seat recital admissions tickets, $80 costume!!, and the attempted $10 late fee because though they auto debit monthly class fees and auto debit the recital charge, they did not auto debit the costume. I was told by the owner that the $10 fee was due to the "administrative burden" of sending follow-up emails regarding the costume fee. Lawyers charge for emails. Dance studio owners?!?! Her follow-up emails get lost in the barrage of junk email she sends...which come to me free of charge! I'm in the building every single week. Why not leave a note with the teacher? Rather than wait 3 months and then hold the costume hostage before confirming that I am even aware of an unpaid balance? THAT might have constituted an "administrative burden". Sending an email...not so much. Read the fine print... On the auto debit sheet. Make sure you and they understand what they will and will not be auto debiting to your account. Apparently recital fees and recital costumes are different. They split hairs and charge one via auto debit and then attempt to impose a late fee on you when they do not charge the other that way. Poor communication and bad implementation of rigid payment policies, causing frustration on both sides of the desk...leads to unpleasant customer service and displeased customers. read more

Teachers here MAY dance well, but the owner and people who are running the business here are very shady and UNETHICAL. For the profit of their business, they are willing to do anything! Due to my negative experience, I will NOT send my kids to this dance school. My daughter has been dancing at RDC since before she was 2. I wouldn't trade our experience for the world. I saw the comment about the $54 recital fee being too high?.. I don't agree. The production, sound, video taping, dress rehearsal are necessary for a recital performance of this size. The dancers gain independence, confidence, performance skills, and its a blast! The costumes are gorgeous and my Daughter treasures every moment. The boys classes are awesome too. multiple styles and age groups are available, there's opportunity to progress if you're are a more serious dancer. We haven't met a teacher we don't love! Under new management, I was a bit leery. But after visiting them, I came to find that the new owners were longtime instructors there. There was a welcoming vibe and renewed enthusiasm going on. Bad business model. You have to opt-out of the recital w/ no flexibility if you miss the cut-off date. What this means is, that if you don't opt-out in time you will get charged a recital fee, plus costumes fees. I canceled my daughter's classes after that and was done with them. I wasn't planning on writing a yelp review until I got a call from Julie, the owner. She wasn't trying to make it right, I think she just called to tell me that everyone is busy and that she works 3 jobs, and travels every weekend, giving her no time with her children. She wouldn't let me get a word in edge-wise. When I told her that she lost my business due to the inflexibility of her policies, she got very angry and practically hung up on me, saying that I'm "lucky I even got a phone call, most businesses wouldn't do that." Normally I read yelp reviews before deciding, but in this case I did not because I had received a gift certificate to the place. It was only after a bad experience did I come to yelp where I noticed my experience was not anomalous, but part of an on-going systematic pattern with Revolution. We signed up our kid for the summer session well ahead of time, but did not pay upon sign up because we had the gift certificate to cash in in person. Unbeknownst to us, the 30-day payment period started ticking on sign up (rather than on class start). We brought in the gift certificate on day 1, which did not cover the full session. With no cash on us at the time, we promised to pay the next time. The next time, they levied a $10 late fee on us. A bit surprising, but figured we could smooth it out over a professional conversation, as these things often go. But, they really pushed hard on squeezing the $10 out of us (not that we cared, it was just noticeably annoying). Finally, they waived the $10. Great! Time to move on and enjoy dance classes, right? Not so fast. They were REALLY steamed about the $10. So steamed, in fact, that they told us NEVER COME BACK. Wow. Un-justified denial of service in a city full of lawyers? Better cash in your make-up classes and credits before this place goes under. So, that's the bad experience to round out everyone else's bad experiences. Otherwise, the dance seemed fun. Kids running around, etc. I have a lot of exposure to dance through UCLA's dance department and children's dance education. This is not really a place you'd want to take your kids if you want them to get good at dance, but really most of us just want our kids to get some movement and have fun. The whole "fun" aspect kind of gets contradicted by the management of the place, unfortunately. We are one of the unfortunate families that had to experience going to revolution dance center during the Covid pandemic. I was really disappointed at the virtual and remote options they offered during early quarantine (basically pre-recorded YouTube videos) while they were still charging us full price. When I finally canceled our membership due to the recital being canceled they refused to refund us what we paid for costumes we never received. They even tried to invoice me for the balance. I realize it was a hard time for everyone but they could have done much better and maybe we would have stuck around! My best friend daughter was in a different dance studio and they handled it much better, they had a live virtual recital and shipped their costumes to the dancers. I won't return here and I don't recommend them. Before covid, you couldn't even watch your dancer dance. They have tiny TV screens instead of windows, which was really disappointing for when grandma came into town. read more

My son is 13, and has been dancing at Revolution Dance Center since he was 6. -Teachers: Every teacher at RDC are my son's mentors. They have guided him in his training.. even if that means doing 20 push ups for talking in class. The training he gets in a variety of styles is what has set him apart from other boy dancers out there. -Friendships: My son's best friends are at RDC. That to me is priceless. -Quality of Training: Lets see, my son dances for the Kid Clippers dance team, dances in the Special Features of the "Peter Rabbit" DVD, has appeared on several TV Shows and game shows, and has recently received a scholarship for Joffrey, and is identified as Gifted in Dance by LAUSD, to name a few of his accomplishments...all with the training he has had at RDC. So yes, I would say the quality of training is very high. -RDC Policies: Nothing is secret or hidden. During this pandemic, I really wanted to do something for myself to fell better. I found that RDC Re-opened an I got super excited to do some adult classes, since they came highly recommend and they also have taught some famous people as well and this was my first time going to a dance class. I signed up for some classes, to later find out that the hourly classes had to be closed again but the group classes are still allowed under the new governor rules for covid. Neither parties are to be blamed for this, THATS why being very understanding to the situation I asked if I can hold on to those few classes I purchased and do them later when they open back up. I am not asking for a refund, since I don't want to get money back. I love the staff and the place and really just wanted to dance. I was told I can't use the purchase I've made, but I didn't get what I paid. I am not outraged or mad at all. I am disappointed and sad that I could not get what I paid for or at least receive that service later on when they open. They were nice enough to give me a virtual pre-recorded videos to watch but the hip hop class was not there. I would've been super happy if I could have just gone back and done my classes. I still think this place is great and that's why I was kind and sweet and understanding and I look at the situation as if I donated money to them , which is what I did. read more

This is a great dance studio for kids. My 4-year old daughter attended Saturday classes for the past summer and school year. She was looking forward to class each week. After class, she always looked so happy and radiant. The dance teachers were dedicated and enthusiastic. They truly made dancing a fun activity for children. The office staff were friendly and courteous. Occasionally there were hiccups in scheduling substitute teachers. This is a big studio where many classes are offered. I can see how keeping it organized could be a challenge. However, I observed the owner and her team work very hard to improve the process. It has worked out fine for me. I also appreciate the waiting area for parents. I walked by another studio on Ocean View and there was limited waiting area. Dancers and parents crowded outside the door in the area open to parking. I don't know how unbearable it would be during unfavorable weather condition. I would recommend this dance studio to parents and their dancing children. I would love to see the studio continue to work hard and provide great experiences and memory to children and parents. read more

I have both of my daughters enrolled in dance classes at RDC...and they absolutely love it! My oldest daughter (5 years old) is now in her second year with RDC and not only has her love and appreciation for dancing grown since she has been there...but her actually dance skills have improved tremendously! The instructors at RDC are amazing with all the kids and it is quite impressive to see how the kids are not only learning to dance, but they are also learning to listen and take direction. Julie and Darrell, the owners, run a smooth and effective business and they have also gathered together an excellent team of instructors to help nurture and teach our children while also providing a safe and comfortable environment for them to explore and enjoy their creative side. We look forward to many more years at the RDC dance studio with Julie, Darrell, and all the other wonderful dance instructors that have turned that place into the amazing establishment that it is today. read more

Worst dance studio in the area. (1) Inflexible policies (if your little 2 1/2 year old child is 10.5 minutes late they will CHASE you down to prevent you from entering the classroom, even though the class has only ONE student!) (2) Receptionist is RUDE (parents complained but were largely ignored because the owner apparently does not care what parents think. (3) Classes are pricey and are less than an hour long (down the street at Helen's dance studio you pay about the same for 90 minutes with excellent instruction.) (4) They don't like to make things convenient for parents, but they love to take your money [like separate recitals so they can charge parents twice for expensive tickets.] (5) They absolutely do not care about the experience for the children OR the parents because they are completely unapologetic and indifferent. When I politely said that my children will no longer take their classes, they couldn't care less. They have dozens of parents sending their children to that studio because it's conveniently LOCATED. Very disappointing staff, disappointing experience overall. There are several superior choices within 1-3 miles of RDC. I would NOT recommend RDC to parents who love their children. read more

We've been going to RDC for about 3 years now and have two daughters there. It's a big dance studio - the owner says about 1100 kids. What we like about it: -Many classes offered, across a range of dance styles. Very convenient to find a class that fits your schedule. -The teachers are nice and must be required to stay upbeat and enthusiastic because they're pretty great. -The recitals are streamlined because these folks have done this before. -Prices are reasonable for the classes offered. -They have community service projects that really help reinforce giving back. -The enthusiasm and energy they bring to the kids during recital week is impressive. They are encouraging, upbeat, and all around fun. They help take the edge off of nervous performers and it must be exhausting for them but they really bring it during dress rehearsal and performance days. Not as great: -Registering for classes is a cumbersome process. I once watched the front desk sign up maybe 5 customers in an entire hour, when there was like 10-15 people in line. Their spiel about deadlines, charges, refunds, etc. is RIDONKULOUS. They must have been burned by upset parents because they are over the top when it comes to communicating policy. Even when it's my turn, I can't wait for it to be over. I recognize that it's better to be thorough with policy but it's poor customer service at that point to make your customers wait that long. The size of the school warrants online registration at this point! -My oldest is 8 and for this level and below, there's not a lot of refinement when it comes to recital dances. I feel like they practice sufficiently but I seldom see the instructors correcting individual speed/movement, etc. (with the exception of the owner, Julie Kay). -The recital costumes are hit and miss in terms of quality. This year I had to reinforce buttons and bows on the dress because one fell off, which is pretty disappointing for an $80 costume. The studio does receive a number of awards/recognitions so my impression might be more critical than others but all in all, my impression is that RDC gets the job done. If you want your child to be a specialized/highly skilled dancer, I would recommend another studio. If you want your child to get some comfort with dancing, learn some rhythm and have some fun, I think they're A-ok. read more

Can't speak too much about the actual dance classes but I have NEVER experienced such horrible customer service in my life. I never write reviews but this particular experience prompted me to take the time out to write it. They are extremely understaffed in the front. One lady just needed to pick up pictures and i needed to pick out a leotard, tights, and shoes. Knowing my task would require the worker longer, i offered to look after she gave the other lady her pictures (which i assumed would be a much quicker task). She said, "there's only me working so other customers will just need to be patient" While appreciated it intially (as I myself was in quite a rush to pick up my kids)... I did feel bad for the other woman who had to wait while i picked out what i needed. Ultimately, i felt rushed because i didn't want the other woman to wait too long because of me. I come back 20 minutes later because the ballet shoes didn't fit, the lady was quick to help me when i asked for 1/2 size UP. I get home and i realize she accidentally gave me 1/2 size DOWN instead. I go back for my 3rd time... by this time, i'm LATE as can be, difficult parking, 2 kids in the car waiting... All i wanted was to run in, ask for the 1/2 size up... the door to the store was open, i was going to grab the right size, run to the front desk to ask for an exchange when a different worker SCREAMS at me, "EXCUSE ME! I"M HELPING SOMEONE HERE, you can't just come in and take something yourself" I bring my item in, it's evident the shoes were from the store, but the old cranky worker lady yells at me, "let me see your receipt". So i run back out to the car, get my receipt and get my exchange. In a rush, i said "thank you" and ran out. Except cranky worker didn't hear me and yells out the door "A THANK YOU WOULD BE NICE!" Seriously, lady... no words to describe this woman. Seriously, at least get 1 more worker so your staff doesn't have to be so cranky and mean! My goodness... read more

My daughter has been attending RDC for about a year now. What prompted me to write this review was P.W's review. THE SAME EXACT THING HAPPENED TO ME! It is absolutely ludicrous how they set up those "preferred" recital tickets. I found out, after a few angry phone calls and dealing with the front desk staff (I wrote an email to the owners, and it went unacknowledged) that the priority number is given when you pay for the recital, which families can do as early as December. Not knowing this, the studio does not make any kind of effort to clearly communicate procedures, when I paid for the recital in late March (and yes, it is over $130 when its all said and done) tickets were sold out before my "date" of pre-sale even arrived. The studio allots 8 preferred tickets per family, which if they cut in half, or even to 6, they may be able to give EVERY FAMILY at least a few reserved seats. But no, I guess doing some simple math and being courteous is too much of a task. The recital is at Crescenta Valley auditorium, absolutely no air conditioning, forget getting any kind of decent seats with the regular admission tickets. Oh, and by the way, you must purchase your dancer a ticket as well even thought they spend most of the time back stage waiting to do the 1-2 minute performance... All in all, this place has poor customer service, ineffective management, un equitable procedures, and guess what? They just don't care! A plus is that most of the staff seems to have a dance background??? But I cannot say for sure. I had enrolled my daughter for this upcoming year, and just today decided to cancel her class; the thought of future drama is not worth it. Took my grandson to this place and as other's have stated the staff is unfriendly, They changed the class room without notice and then the room that we ended up in had NO air conditioning on extremely hot day. When I continue to ask for the air to be put on I was told they were working on it. Let me tell you they didn't and I took my grandson out before class was even over. It was way too hot to be dancing without air. Another very annoying thing about this place is the parking. So many parents just stop in front of the studio and drop off all their kids or wait to pick up their kids or park in the handicapped spot as they wait. Some even stop and have chit chats with other parents who are waiting. I sent an email to the owner and like others I didn't receive any response back. Pretty amazed that not one person from this company has responded to any of these reviews Most places with any kind of customer service or owners who actually care about their business responded. I wanted to cancel my children's dance class for fall season due to schedule conflicts. I called a few weeks ago and was told that I need to cancel before class starts. I went in and canceled before their class started and was told I can't get a refund of $122 because my credit card was already charged, and that I was supposed to come in before the end of the month. I wish I was told that over the phone when I first called. That $122 is a week's worth of groceries for my kids. I feel so misled and cheated. Horrible! My almost 3 year old has explicitly asked at he wants to go to dance school. He loves dancing. He loves music and copying as most kids that age. I've been looking for something that isn't ballet and found this hip hop for tots. Perfect I thought. In my head dance music and fun... $15 later there turned out to be very very little music and very little dancing.. Mostly the teacher going 1,2,3... And some weird "ice cream move". My son was stunned and not keen to participate. He probably wondered where's the music and why is this lady screaming so loud... My association to the loud counting instead of music (sitting outside) was the aerobic workout in the 80ies... This not our first rodeo and we've been to kids dance parties with DJ where the DJ got the kids to dance and doing hip hop moves ... My little guy was all into it. My daughter has been attending RDC since they opened and has been taking classes from Julie Kay even longer. She has taken classes from many of the teachers and she absolutely loves this place. If you are looking for a dance studio for your child, look no further. The teaching staff is excellent and many are professional dancers. They teach a variety of dance styles and have classes for all ages. They also offer a competitive dance team (Julie Kay's Dance Company). My experience with the staff has been nothing but positive. They are encouraging, supportive, and fun. If you are looking for a super competitive environment like on Dance Mom's, this is not the place for you. This is truly a special place. Besides receiving excellent dance instruction, my daughter has been exposed to an environment that emphasizes courtesy, respect for others, honesty, and hard work. It does get crazy busy in this place at times and a little patience is sometimes required if you have a question or need help at the desk. But they are busy for a reason. Just take a look at all the smiling faces all around and you will see why so many families come back year after year. The owners, Julie Kay, Darrell, and Melissa, care deeply about their students and do everything in their power to make their dancers (and parents) happy. That being said, I am sure there are situations where they cannot please everyone. Had PW simply read the information provided about the recital, she would not have had a problem. It's funny when people who don't follow the rules become angry when they aren't given special treatment. Do not let a couple of unhappy people dissuade you from this studio. My daughter (5) and I LOVE this studio. So many classes to choose from and the teachers are the best. We just did our first recital and it was top notch. From rehearsal to the actual performance everything went so smoothly. It's a little on the pricey side but you get what you pay for! If you're looking for a caring group of dance teachers this is the place! I'm so happy I love it as much as my 5 year old! read more
