Although we've owned a peloton bike for over 4 years, we still come to this studio several times a week because we enjoy the classes and the camaraderie of the other spin regulars. The studio is very clean, the equipment is well maintained, and the instructors are top notch. My wife and I have taken spin classes at other gyms, including when we travel, but so far, we rate our experience at Crank Cycle the best. Denise, the owner, is very personable and bubbly and her enthusiasm is contagious. My wife combines her spin experience with participation in the challenging Shredz class that precedes the spin classes, so she really gets a great workout for 1.25 hours (spin classes are 45 minutes).

Then when I went to class today before training I once again tried to talk to her but she was too busy to talk to me. So before my second class in her studio I told her I needed to talk to her again, she was annoyed when I brought up an issue I had with her as a member. I was upset and I raised my voice and she immediately raised her voice back. As an owner of the business, you can not do that. It's unprofessional. I pay a big membership for her studio and instead of trying to resolve the issue when I said I will continue at her studio until the end of the month she told me to leave now and will credit me back for the month very nasty. So I packed my stuff up and left. No resolution, just very abrupt and nasty. No customer service as an owner and professionalism at all. She had her business partner watch me pack my stuff and leave. Then when I messaged her to let me know when she issued me a credit, I got a response back: "Why are you texting me, I'm going to block you". That fact and response alone was not professional for an owner of a spin studio. This was an unfortunate event and not expected from a person I have known for over 20 years. I am hoping she at least is true to her word and credits me the month back after she told me to leave.

I liked all the different exercises that Tom taught and especially appreciated all the variations he offered for each movement! I also really enjoy the Unify class with Dr. Tae on Saturday mornings. It's a combination of yoga, qi gong, and breathwork all in one. His attention to detail and focus on improving posture is what keeps me coming back. Love learning how to integrate the breath into the postures. I haven't learned a new skill in ages, but I saw students practicing kendo at Ki Body & Spirit and decided to give it a try. The kendo community is mixed ages, which I really enjoy. It's inspiring practicing with the kids and a welcome challenge being introduced to sparring. The dojo also offers iaido sword form, which I really like learning and a lovely practice of concentration and flow.

While I've tried a variety of workouts, I've never had a chance to go to a spin class. I took the…read morepackage deal they offered on groupon as a golden opportunity to step out of my comfort zone and try something new. Suffice to say, I went to one class and never looked back. Sure, the studio is so new it's practically sparkling and they had brand new bikes. Oh and despite the amount of sweat produced inside it actually smelled good too! Additionally, the schedules aren't bad and signup is easy on the website. Regardless of this there were two thorns that stuck in my behind, the style of instruction and the type of bikes they used. Style of instruction: I knew something was off kilter from the minute I turned the corner to the studio. I was early and what I heard was an enraged voice yelling, possibly someone engaged in a fight. I slowly approached the studio and realized it was just the instructor with the class before mine. Um. Wow. The class started out fine.. Our instructor adjusted my bike for me, showed me the basics and started playing some tunes. Within 3 minutes he turned from calm and encouraging to loud and intimidating like a drill sergeant. In fact, he makes Gunny from full metal jacket look like snuggles the bear. He had an infinite amount of energy and was yelling, making hand motions and stomping around the entire time. He'd get really into it and yell things like "THIS IS YOUR RIDE ! GO FOR IT. INCREASE THE RESISTANCE - CLIMB THAT HILL. COME ON!!!" then go up to you, breathing hard, making hand motions to go faster. He'd exclaim "CAN YOU FEEL IT? CAN YOU FEEL THE BURN?!" while jumping on his bike going 40mph in front of us. It was..... intense. I was struggling to keep up and it didn't go unnoticed. The class was really small with 3 people in it so all attention is on you if your messing up or going slow. The craziness continued on the entire time. I didn't particularly enjoy this style of motivation (all I need is some music with a high bpm) and I did have a challenging time on the bikes, which leads me to my next issue. The Realryder bikes: Core Ryder stands out from the rest of the spin studios with it's RealRyder bikes. Unlike stationary bikes, they can be shifted to either side by some strong leaning and are completely stabilized by you. By leaning into them in either direction you're working your core and theoretically burning more calories. It's supposed to replicate a "real" bike riding experience. The only thing this bike did was cause me frustration. I realize it was my first time but I had a ridiculous amount of trouble holding down one side of it. The instructor would command us to lean to the right and I cold hold it slightly to the right for until I started spinning faster. It became harder to hold at that point. He'd notice I wasn't holding to the right, would tell me to do so again, causing me to start getting frustrated. In addition, the seats are NOT comfortable on these. I know, you're not supposed to be sitting much during a spin class but in addition to being a little oval rock seats they became painful. I would constantly catch my inner thigh on the side of the seat while leaning to one side or moving around. Due to the constant pressure and rubbing it became difficult and painful to lean the bike after 30 minutes of "the ride". If it was had for me, I can't imagine what it would be like for a guy. When the class ended, the instructor chatted with us a bit and seemed like a genuinely nice guy. I explained that I had trouble with the bikes and he told me I'd get the hang of it ...eventually. Regardless, I couldn't bring myself to go back here. I hurt for days after the workout (I walked out bow legged) and it wasn't even the GOOD type of post workout soreness. Unless you've used the real ryder bikes, like being yelled at AND are in amazing shape, proceed with caution to Core Ryder.

Coreryder is a unique and challenging experience. I was never that aerobically great, so I definitely needed to build up to the full hour. The advantage that I had was that years of pilates at the same studio gave me great core strength, so the side to side movement of the bikes was hard, but not impossible. The reality is- you do what you can. You are competing with yourself, not anyone else. If your tension as not as high as someone else's or you are not going as fast as someone else, or you sit down when others are standing- well that is your business. The satisfaction of being more and more capable and the great instructors are a big reason that I really enjoy this studio . Definitely try it- but do yourself a favor and don't decide that you will never do it again after one time! You owe yourself at least a three time effort.

They did respond to my friend via IG (I don't use IG to communicate with businesses) and thought they'd respond to me via their work email account then but still no response. The instructor arrived a few minutes late the first time I went there (understandable, the weather was really bad and I don't blame her at all for that and would rather people be safe) but she didn't introduce herself and even though I wasn't the only new person there (she asked if anyone was new), she didn't approach any of us mid or after working out just to check in and see how we felt or give tips. It was my first time working out since the pandemic started and I was clearly behind so I would've liked an encouraging word or two. I wasn't expecting one on one training but an instructor acknowledging the new people is pretty normal.
