Mentioned it to the waitress who said she would advise the kitchen but we heard nothing back. Apart from that everything was as excellent as usual.

The Cherry Tree in Blackrod is a traditional looking English country pub/restaurant, complete with…read morepicturesque thatched roof, As we walked in, a member of staff greeted us and asked if we'd like to sit at the bar whilst we waited for the rest of our party. We ordered a few drinks, and it was helpfully suggested that we could put them on the table's tab instead of paying right away. It was nice to see that ale on offer was from local business, Black Edge Brewery. The bar area also has a lovely log burning stove, which was singing away cheerfully, and a welcome feature on a cold evening! After our party arrived, a manager took us through to the dining room where we took our place at a table (with uncomfy chairs), and were handed the menus and the specials menu by the manager, who told us that the soup of the day was sold out, but luckily they had another on offer. They also ran out of the pie of the day, and the sticky toffee pudding. It was 5pm. The starter I chose was the rustic bread board, which I thoroughly enjoyed! The bread was fresh and tasty, and as I remarked to our waiter, I think the balsamic vinegar was the best I've ever had! Bravo! The rest of the party were also pleased with their choices, and looking forward to their mains. The mains we chose included smoked haddock, roast chicken, brisket, and a burger with pancetta and Monterey Jack cheese (and very tasty crunchy fries!). The meals were tasty, but there was one hiccup... the mashed potato on the roast chicken dinner was absolutely stone cold! The mash on the brisket however was warm. So after informing a waiter, he took it away and returned a little while later with a fresh meal. Although the rest of the party had nearly finished, I think that this incident was handled well. The replacement meal wasn't simply the same meal with re-heated mash, but a completely fresh meal. This is a very good point in my book, as we all know plenty of places that would whack the meal in a microwave for 2 minutes and bring it back out again with some herbs thrown on top. Nicely done, Cherry Tree. We ordered two desserts (I just wanted a pot of tea, and one of the party was miffed that he was missing out on sticky toffee pudding as he was looking forward to it). The desserts ordered were an orange crème brulee with chocolate chip cookies (which we found odd... creme brulee with cookies? It didn't matter, I had them with my pot of tea instead!), and bread and butter pudding, At this point we all laughed, because the size of the bread and butter pudding was comical. It was the size of a Mr Kipling Country Slice, and as pleasant as it was, it was a stingy portion for £6.95! If the dish was two of these slices, then it might have been a little fairer. Basically, the starters and main courses were good, but the desserts could be better, especially given that The Cherry Tree is not the cheapest of restaurants. I also found it funny that my pot of tea was only half full, and so only made one-and-a-quarter cups of tea, but luckily I was so stuffed on that big tasty burger that it wasn't really a problem! The other issue was a service issue. It was a Sunday, and so granted it was busy, so staff were very busy too, however, aside Tom (the manager), nobody told us their names, and so we didn't have one particular waiter/waitress taking care of us, we had several who checked on us, brought out the food etc, but not a "main" waiter in particular, and so we weren't introduced to anyone or given any names. This normally wouldn't be so bad, but as we didn't have one particular waiter keeping an eye on the table, it meant that nobody asked us when we'd like the bill, and after an hour of sitting at an empty table, one of our party decided to go over to the bar to ask for the bill instead, which came a few minutes later. Our meal from start to finish took just under three hours, but despite this, it was a pleasant and relaxing experience. During this time I popped to the loo, and found it amusing that although being an older pub, there is only one cubical, no loo roll holder, and an ancient hand-dryer, they offer amenities like a chic London or New York bar. Nothing fancy or expensive, but a nice gesture nonetheless. Certainly something different to other places I've been. As we left, Tom asked us if everything was okay, but it seems that Tom hadn't been made aware of the cold mashed potato incident, but he apologised, and explained that they don't microwave anything, so the mash was heated to order, and it must've been a mistake in the kitchen, using the wrong pan. My overall thoughts are that although the food was tasty, and the venue itself very pleasant and relaxing, the menu is a little pricier than other similar restaurants I've been to in the area, and although the staff were friendly and professional, service was a bit slow and inattentive. Probably wouldn't return.

I'm late to the party with this one, I know. There's a lot of Italian restaurants around Bolton and…read moreit was hard not to think "oh, another Italian restaurant". But this is where Lucianos is different. The first thing you notice when you walk in the door is that the staff are talking to each other in Italian... that's a good sign in a true Italian restaurant! It's decorated in a bright and modern contemporary style, showing modern Italian dining rather than the old fashioned 'Ristorante' style we often have over here with candle-filled Chianti bottles, faux grape vines and nick nacks all over the place. A couple of trendy Vespas are found on the way in, with a dining area to the left, and a modern bar area to the right, making it clear this is a modern venue, not another cheesy Italian themed restaurant. Despite not having a reservation, we are welcomed warmly, and shown to a pleasant table where we are given our menus by a charismatic manager / maitre'd, who seems very much at home in that role, and has fine tuned his patter; he asks if we'd like any wine by the bottle, but we were only having soft drinks, so he took the glasses away with the quip, "less mess for me!", I also like that when we were browsing the dessert menu later on, he chimed in, "Remember, signori, I will never let you struggle... all desserts come with a third spoon for me". I like this. You don't get the bon viveur style head waiter so much these days, and it's nice when you find it, and it seems genuine and warm hearted. For our starter we order Budino Nero, which is black pudding served with sweet peppers, chorizo and red wine reduction, served with crostini bread, and the Terrina a modo nostro, a duck and chicken liver pate, finished with aged brandy and port. Served with cranberry compot and crostini. Before too long our starters arrive, and are beautifully presented. The lighting in this venue really shows off the food well. The pate was delicious and fresh with a little salad, and the black pudding starter was simply beautiful. It was meaty but with a red wine reduction which was deliciously sweet, and worked well in contrast with the meaty flavours and richness of the chorizo. I was so impressed with it that I asked one of the wait staff if they could find out what the sauce was for me. Marvellous! We were so impressed with the starters that we were salivating at the idea of our mains! Main courses took a little longer to arrive, but the venue was starting to get busy, so it's not surprising, plus frankly I'm happy to wait longer for good quality food cooked fresh to order. We ordered the tagliatelle carbonara speciale, and my partner decided to try something new, and opted to try the Ravioli All'Argosta, which is egg ravioli filled with lobster in a lobster and tomato bisque. The carbonara was presented as well as it can be, and I took the offer of fresh parmesan topping. The flavours were excellent, and it was wonderfully creamy and filling! The lobster ravioli looked... well... there's probably not many ways you can make it look good on a plate given the nature of it as a dish... but it was there on the plate... and was very tasty with a distinct flavour without being overbearing. The quality of the fresh pasta was superb too! So our starters and main courses were both excellent, two thumbs up! We were enjoying relaxing in the atmosphere of the place too, so the wait didn't feel too bad. We were very full, but decided we simply had to try some of the desserts... you know, to properly finish off! I ordered one of the home-made caramel cheesecakes, and my partner ordered the canolo (tube-shaped shells of fried pastry dough, filled with a sweet, creamy filling usually containing ricotta... a bit like a brandy snap). The cheesecake was tasty but a lot softer than I was expecting, probably as I've become more used to American style baked cheesecakes. The slice was a bit on the thin side, but the flavour was good, and wonderfully creamy. The canolo was also a little bit of a small portion. Admittedly it was listed as "canolo" (one) rather than "canoli" (multiple), but this one little canolo looked a bit lonely on a huge plate with a dusting of icing sugar over it. I think as a portion perhaps three of them would be a better portion and look better, but again the flavours and textures were excellent and couldn't be faulted. Delicious! By now it was getting very busy, and we had trouble getting the attention of any of the staff to be able to ask for our bill, so I had to go to the main counter and ask the manager, but he was very friendly and gracious and brought the bill over straight away. All in all, we were very very pleasantly pleased with Lucianos on what was a simple spur of the moment visit. The quality of the ingredients, the style of the setting and decor, and the professionalism of the staff really made this an enjoyable visit, and we will most definitely be returning! Buonisimo!

This left us feeling a little disappointed initially but not after we had eaten our food. There was a wide selection of dishes beyond pizza and we were all very happy with our choices. We thoroughly enjoyed our range of pastas and risottos and will definitely go back one evening to try the main course meat dishes and hopefully garlic bread!

Located on Lee Lane in the heart of Horwich, which is quickly becoming a foodie haven, La Salsa is…read morean independent tapas and wine bar which has quickly gained the love of diners both local and visiting with its good quality food and service at a good price. The main draw is the fact that La Salsa offers a menu of over 40 tapas dishes for just £12.95-£15.95 depending on when you go. For this one price you can eat as much as you like, for as long as you like. The menu has sections covering breads, olives, salads, meat, fish, chicken, charcuterie, and vegetarian, as well as a large drinks menu covering beers, wines, liqueurs and spirits, and soft drinks, as well as the occasional special cocktail and sangria jugs. There's a dessert menu too, but most people don't get that far by the time they need rolling out the door! The way things tend to work are that after being seated and ordering drinks, your party will each tell the server two or three dishes (they're numbered too, so don't worry about brushing off those Spanish pronunciation skills you learned in school!), and the dishes are all brought together in small dishes, allowing you to graze, nibble, and share to your own delight. After finishing a "round", the waiting staff clear your dishes and take more orders. In essence you can try everything on the menu through the evening, as many times as you'd like! I particularly like their "Tapas De Pescado" (seafood), which are done very well. To be honest, all of the dishes are cooked perfectly and presented well, and I enjoyed all of the ones I've tried immensely. I've never NOT enjoyed a visit to La Salsa! The venue itself is split into two storefronts, which originally had one unit as the main dining room and kitchen, and the other unit as a bar and lounge area, but with La Salsa's increasing popularity, the lounge area had to be fitted out as another dining room! The décor is traditional and rustic, with stripped wooden floors, chunky wooden accents and artwork, and partitions made from old wooden doors (!), and tall candles on both the tables and against the walls, as Spanish and Catalan music plays giving an authentic feel to the Spanish atmosphere, only spoiled slightly by the ceiling, which is office style Styrofoam ceiling tiles. But frankly who's looking up? There's more food coming! The staff are young, friendly and hard-working. Due to how busy the venue can get, you can expect to order with and be served by several different staff members. Rumours are frequent that staff aren't allowed to keep their tips, and tips are kept by the venue itself. I'm not sure if that's true or not, but with how hard the staff work, I'd be disappointed if I found out if it was. La Salsa doesn't have private parking, so you will have to use street parking, or one of the local free car parks within walking distance, but luckily both options are free. I love La Salsa, and continue to go again and again, as do my friends, parents, in-laws, and anyone else I've introduced to it! If you try it yourself, I guarantee you will too! It's also nice to see that despite lots of local competition, including from restaurant chains nearby at Middlebrook Retail Park, La Salsa continues to thrive and gain in popularity. That shows they're definitely doing something right!

Today I returned for dinner, having meant to come back for dinner ever since I enjoyed that first lunch visit by chance. I'm surprised it's not already on Yelp as it's not new either. It's over 1000 years old. Yes you read that right. The Black Horse is believed to be one of the oldest serving taverns in the country, and was the second pub in the country to be granted a license back in 1577. Every corner and beam exudes the feeling of a classic English pub/tavern. It's comfortable, cosy, and welcoming, with dark wooden furniture, a roaring fire, and warmly lit side rooms. It's everything you would want in a proper English pub. As I don't drink, we were here for dinner, and were greeted warmly and given menus. The staff are friendly and familiar, it's their business and their baby, and they want to make sure people enjoy their visit. The menu has recently been updated and has some fantastic sounding options, as well as periodical specials. On this occasion, we chose the starters of black pudding scotch egg, and garlic flatbread. We were surprised. It's a pub, so you don't quite expect the artistic and pleasant presentation of the black pudding scotch egg, which was beautifully tempting to look at, and perfectly cooked with a lovely soft yolk. The mustard sauce was creamy with a gentle kick. The garlic flatbread was subtle on the garlic side, but lusciously buttery and fresh. The staff checked on us now and then to make sure everything was ok, even the chef herself at one point. Very enjoyable indeed. For our mains, we chose the cheese and onion pie, and the fish and chips, two classics of British pub food! The best bit? The chef came out and asked how I'd like the side of bread and butter cut with my fish and chips! We all know why too... preference... do you just want bread? Chip butties? It's all dependant on that cut! It was nice to be asked! Both were again presented pleasantly. The pie was unctuously cheesy in a perfectly crispy pastry, not a soggy bottom in sight! The mash you could tell from the moment it was placed on the table was proper home made mash, and the comforting thick gravy provided was perfect for flooding the lot! Wonderful! The fish and chips were equally good. The mushy peas were nice, and the tartare sauce was particularly good, however my praise is mainly on the fish, which was outstanding! The quality of the fish alone was excellent, and the batter was crunchy, crispy, golden perfection! For dessert we chose the sticky toffee pudding (it's a classic!) and from the specials menu, the jam roly poly. Both with custard. We're Northern. The sticky toffee pudding was deliciously rich whilst being super light and fluffy! The smell of the jam roly poly slapped in the face as soon as it arrived, whisking me back to nostalgic childhood sunday dinners. The taste was amazing, not just in flavour, but the crust on the pudding was just right, with the occasional chewy crunchy bit. Bloody marvellous! I'd come again just that jam roly pudding! Basically The Black Horse is everything you want from a proper old English pub. It's established, cosy, warm, welcoming, and offers great drinks, excellent food, and a thoroughly pleasant atmosphere. I recommend it thoroughly!

I opted for their Hot Rump Steak Sandwich with fries from their Bar Menu (£8.75). The steak sandwich was alright, but nothing much to write home about. We were so hungry that we wolfed what we'd ordered down. Anyway, despite not booking we were shown a table at the back. The kitchen apparently wasn't open yet but we took the time to change out of our wet walking gear and order some drinks at the bar. The coffee was surprisingly good and the beer selection was nice and local. We were finally allowed to order food at the bar and the guy serving was friendly and helpful. He was one of the few who actually seemed to be doing any work. Despite only ordering a soup, a sandwich and a sausage, our food took over 30 minutes to arrive and I had to ask them where it was. My soup was tasty although verging on cold and the two lumps of hard bread looked more like giant croutons. I asked for an additional slice of bread and was promptly brought it without any fuss or extra cost which was great. The food on the menu wasn't cheap but it seems to be of a very high standard. The menu is huge for a Sunday menu which might explain why it took so long for it to be prepared. Overall it was a nice pub that potentially thinks a little too highly of itself. This was Gnocchi with spinach, chilli and sausage. As I sipped my lovely flat white, 20 minutes passed by and the food arrived. It was presented very well, there was easily enough Garlic bread to share if you needed to! The Gnocchi was really nice, not too spicy at all and the sauce was a nice consistency. It was maybe a little salty, but that was mainly due to the sausage and the pancetta that where in it I'm guessing. The waiter did a check back, which is good (if not it's a bit of a bug bear for me) and brought me the bill promptly when asked. Grand total of £13.90 which i thought was a bargain as I was well and truly full! It was little because it was literally a tiny country lane, but I'm not sure about the Scotland bit... In the middle of rambling fields and winding lanes you will find Suzanna's. Just outside Blackrod, and very much a step back in time to the bit that escaped development. I remember this building being Gallagher's, a friend of my grandad's. Funnily enough, although I was aware of its presence for many years, I don't actually know anyone who went there, perhaps that is why it is now Suzanna's! After visiting the restaurant with cake club I couldn't wait to go and try the new menu. I called the very next day for a reservation! The decor and staff had already won me over, so I had high expectations for the food. Suzanna is a lovely lady; passionate about her work, the food and her family, but also well travelled and has eaten at some of my favourite restaurants. I was sure this was going to be a good experience! They didn't let me down. My husband and I went on Friday night. I had been dreaming of the assiette of desserts that she had teased me with on Monday... We started with a small aperitif, not something I expected for a restaurant nestled between Blackrod and Haigh! It was a piece of ham terrine with a lovely quail scotch egg on top. We didn't have starters because we both fancied a dessert (some piglet might have been out for lunch as well...) My husband had the Pork Three Ways, and I opted for the burger. I always find a burger is a good test of a restaurant. Easy to get right, but equally easy to make a right pig's ear of it. Both were lovely. What Suzanna's seem to be able to do is serve homely food, but they also capture enough of the fine dining element to make the trip feel a little more special than your average town restaurant. My burger was well seasoned and cooked to perfection. They make their own burger sauce too. The skinny fries were really tasty, and I particularly liked the fact they had their skin on. The pork dish includes a fillet wrapped in bacon, confit belly and ham hock terrine. It's served with dauphinoise potatoes and a local cider sauce. If I'm being honest, I could have quite happily just gone to Suzanna's for desserts. Reading through the menu, I could have easily tried everything they had to offer! Traditional desserts, all homemade, all tempting me... Then there is the assiette. One of almost everything on the menu. This is one of my favourite desserts ever. It's a true tasting platter! None of this trio malarky! We had trifle, bakewell tart, vanilla ice cream, cinnamon ice cream, sticky toffee pudding, lemon tart and carrot cake. We 'shared' it. I have no shame in telling you that I could have devoured the entire plate myself. I loved it. I would happily recommend Suzanna's. We had a relaxing evening with great food. We'll definitely be making a return visit!

Stepping in to the bar area you are greeted by big velvet covered armchairs, much akin to images of men sipping brandy in front of open fires, and exposed brick. The reason my review is only 4 stars also lies within this bar - the TV and fruit machine really take away from the atmosphere they are trying, and almost succeeding, to create. The bar staff were polite and helpful and, when it was time to move from the bar to the restaurant, the server took our drinks for us, one of my favourite things when moving from one room to another whilst eating out. The dining area has a real luxury feel to it, with leather covered booths and exposed beams, expensive but comfortable and warm, a balance that can be hard to find. Service was efficient and they seemed happy to go away and come back to take our order later, not annoyed by our indecisiveness about both food and wine (when I say our I mean the men of the table - the women had decided before we'd even sat down thanks to looking at the menu online!) I skipped starters due to my love of dessert but everything was presented well and generated the correct noises from my fellow diners. My choice for main was confit of duck leg and it was delicious; moist, falling from the bone, but with some amazing crispy sections hidden away underneath. The mash was smooth and creamy, blending perfectly with the sweet braised red cabbage and red wine reduction. The menu has a great selection meaning even the fussiest of eaters will be able to find something; I was very much drawn towards the breaded chicken & chorizo burger or the chicken & chorizo risotto (which the bf eventually chose and I managed to snaffle a forkful - smokey and creamy but chunks of chorizo alongside the chicken would have really lifted it!) For dessert I tucked in to warm chocolate fudge cake and ice cream after a long battle with the bf's mum about who was going to have the lemon tart and who would have the cake - you can't have the same dessert!! The cake was moist and drenched in chocolate sauce and the ice cream was sat on top of a tasty nutty crumble, adding another element to the dish. The lemon tart had just the right amount of tang and came with a bright coulis, perfect when you've had a heavy meal. A great experience here and somewhere we will all definitely return to, but not to play the slots.
