Very Happy with RWB. When some appliance delivery/installers from the Big Box retailer in the area damaged my grandmother's hutch I was distraught with the damage inflicted. I called Restorers without Borders and they explained to me the process. They will come to the house, do the estimate and take the piece. There's a charge for this of course and I understood this. This charge is applied towards any work you do, and I knew I was going to get this piece repaired so I accepted this. They came to the house and described exactly what they could do and offered me several options on fixing the other flaws in the piece. While I was arguing with the delivery company on coverage, RWB held my piece for several weeks in their shop. I gave them the go ahead to do the work after a few weeks, and I have to say, good things come to those who wait. They delivered my piece yesterday and I have to say, it looks better than ever, and they even fixed a bunch of other issues with the table free of charge! They exceeded my expectations. They did a fantastic job, I honestly cannot even believe how they matched the finish and wood inlays of a piece of furniture that is 80+ years old. They aren't the cheapest, but for things that carry enormous sentimental value, who cares. If you have furniture you really care about, these are the guys you should use. They have been very honest and up front from the beginning. The guys that actually do the work come out to look at your furniture and they are the ones delivering it. So they really care on how careful they are with the delivery and handling of your furniture. I'm sure they aren't the cheapest, and they are probably aren't the fastest. But if being done right and quality are the most important to you, then these are the guys to use. Period end. Thank you again RWB, my grandmother would be thrilled. Sent an email with pictures of furniture in need of repair. Never heard back. It's almost they're too busy for your business.

They specialize in not returning phone calls. After numerous cycles of byzantine interactions with them through email and phone calls showing them pictures of my table, describing it in detail and repeating my name and address multiple times (over a period of a week) I was told that "Alfonso" would call me to schedule an appointment... but it never happened, I never heard from them again; what a waste of time! They may be excellent, but I'll never know it (It's good to know they are without borders if I ever move to Romania) read more

Do Not use them!!! My table came back with a very very very dull and cloudy finish. I asked them to redo it and they said no, it was as shiny as they could get it. The issue is that their definition of "shiny" is radically different than the original finish - the original finish is on the dining room table leaves. When they brought the table to my house, they also gave me a spray bottle that is for PLASTIC and warned me not to use furniture polish. So, I have religiously used this Plastic spray and it is does not work. The table turns a different color in various areas a few days after I use the spray. I feel like my dining room table is wrecked and that it has a plastic finish. read more

My review is based on my experience trying to get a quote. I called in about having a seat re-caned. Since I don't live close by I did my best to give an accurate description of the chair seats but the gentleman on the phone refused to give me a quote over the phone. So I took a lot of time out of my Saturday to drive over there and they took a look at it for about 10 seconds and gave me a crazy high price. I understand the price that they gave me, but I'm frustrated that I had to go through so much trouble to get a quote. So just be prepared for that process. read more

We inherited an old table, which we love for sentimental reasons as much as for its beauty and size (seats 10-12) when fully extended. It's got some great inlay, etc., so it needs extensive facelifts every 10 years or so. Jeff and his wonderful crew not only brought the table back to good working order, they finished it so it gleams like new. And their resident furniture expert, Paul, identified the style for us. They picked it up, worked on schedule - in fact, ahead of schedule- and delivered it without missing a beat. Watching them work is like watching a perfectly choreographed dance. We wanted to get a sofa recovered and told them we wanted tacks and needed cushions replaced. The employee quoted a range and picked up the sofa. Once they had it, the owner called to tell us that the tacks were additional (despite their knowing about them ahead of time), that the cushions cost more than they quoted, and that there were repairs that also had to be done - all to the tune of nearly twice the top of the original quote - over $1000 more than originally quoted. He was furious that we were upset at this. After much discussion he lowered the added cost by a couple hundred. He was unprofessional and rude and offended that we took it as a bait and switch. I give three stars instead of one because of the craftsmanship - they did do a beautiful job. read more

Unfortunately I didn't get to work with them because the price was high for me but they were very nice to take my call and look at the emails I send them with picture of the damaged piece I had. They explain what can be done and what can't be done with a rough estimate for the cost in a very timely manner. I thought they deserve a good review just for the great customer service. read more

Who are these people giving them two stars? Way too generous. Wish my wife had read the few reviews before getting involved with this company. All very consistent with our experience. We eventually pulled the ripcord, paid them for their time and abandoned the project. I could go on and on about why I would never work with them again, but likely it will just cause the owner to repeat himself over and over again about how his company meets their timelines and deliverables. I was very nervous about having my dining room table and chairs refinished. The set was purchased by my parents when they were married in 1954. This table has great sentimental as well as monetary value to me. (I have eaten every Christmas Eve dinner of my life at this table!) I had wanted to recover the chairs but, when the table was accidentally damaged with a harsh cleaning fluid, the project became much more complicated. I researched companies to do the job and finally choose Restorers without Borders. THEY ARE AWESOME!!!! The work is incredible. Over time, the table had lightened and the leaves, including the extra one my Dad made, were different shades. The entire table, including Dad's leaf, now matches!! Thirty years ago when we moved to Massachusetts, the movers lost the legs to our Danish modern ottoman. The craftsmen at Restorers without Borders fabricated new legs, using photographs and the detached cushion top, which we still had, as guides for construction. The woodwork is beautiful, and the stool functions as intended--adjustable to two different heights. Now the reclining chair has its matching stool restored, and the set will be treasured by a fourth generation in our family. read more

We purchased a dining room table at the Design Center in Boston 6 years ago for our apartment in Manhattan. It was floor model with minor scratches on the top but the grain was so beautiful that we couldn't resist buying it. We had it refinished by a highly reputable person in Boston before shipping it to NYC. Within one year the finish crazed. We had it refinished again by another refinisher in NYC who did an absolutely horrific job. He stained it so dark that there was no grain visible and the surface finish was rough. During various trips to Boston, we passed Restorers Without Borders. We decided to bring a table leaf to them to see what they could do with this once beautiful table. The result was magnificent and even they were shocked by the beauty of the hidden grain. We were so impressed that we had the table shipped from NYC to RWB. We viewed the finished product last week and were not disappointed. Truly magnificent, as we remembered it. The table is being shipped back to NYC this month. The moral of this story - if you want it done right, this is the right place. It's well worth the wait and the price. read more

It really doesn't get any better than Restorers Without Borders. We had a favorite old oak dining table that we'd had for probably 35 years and it was in BAD shape but so comfortable because we are a tall family and there's nothing on the table that bonks our legs when we sit at it. It's solid and well-made, so we decided to refinish rather than buy new. Jeff and Alfonso at Restorers did every single thing perfectly. They were prompt, fun and easy to talk to yet professional. They drove a long way to our home to give an estimate and pick up the table, and they did exactly what they promised. I wanted a darker stain than the old-fashioned golden oak that was on the table, and the job they did was out of this world. That table is gorgeous! It's just the color and finish we wanted. We get so many compliments on it. My motto for these guys is "Get Shellacked". Terrible customer relations. Unprofessional payment practices. Sharp negotiating tactics. Bizarrely uneven work. Our experience was astonishingly like the other Yelp reviewer, Allie G. We're still recovering from the trauma of being their customer. My advice: if you must use these guys, document everything you expect to have done in writing and agree to a firm price (not a range) in advance. And don't pay anything until the piece is complete and delivered! If anything goes wrong, you'll hear from the owner about how it was absolutely your fault. I brought in a banged-up, rickety hope chest. They stripped it, repaired it and re-stained it. They were up front about the timeline (approx 6 weeks) and provided an estimate. They called me mid-project to come by to review the staining options. I ended up going with their recommendation on the stain color and really liked it. I brought a Danish modern (Hans Wegner) sewing table because the drawer was jammed. They said "no problem" "Easy job." They looked, hemmed and hawed and called the "Boss." The Boss quoted me $225. I fainted and then put the table back in the car. When I got home, I jiggled the drawer as I was taking it out of the car. It released and is working. $225????
