As a health food vegan, I am always on the lookout for food like this: whole foods/plant-based, including some oil-free options. Their whole menu reads like a list of my favorite food buzzwords: buckwheat, lentil cauliflower scramble, sunflower seed meat, local fermented sauerkraut, freshly milled Sonoran wheat; tempeh, sourdough, homemade seeded bread, homemade cashew milk, etc. etc. It was legitimately hard to decide what to get. I went with the baked(!) strawberry banana oat buckwheat pancakes. Super tasty, and a generous portion. I also couldn't resist an oil-free sunbutter cookie (with its wacky bluegreen tinge that was apparently from the sunflower seeds) and also loved the cold brew coffee with cashew milk.

It is a little pricey, however, it's worth the cost. As I mentioned, everything is healthy and made fresh. You can't get that without paying a bit extra Their bread is so good, the chutney is awesome, their little side salads are so tasty. I haven't tried anything here that I have not loved. They are a small husband and wife run business, which is always great to see. They are very friendly people who clearly love what they do. There's limited seating indoors, as it's inside Barnone, but you can easily find places to sit outdoors as well.

I've been meaning to get over here and try this place out and finally got here yesterday…read moreI have shopped at Natural Grocers in Austin, Dallas, and Amarillo and knew that I liked the store but hadn't gotten to this one until 2 days ago. I got away with only spending under $17 because I didn't need a lot of quantity since I'm just visiting in Mesa. There were a couple things I forgot to look for but the main issue is that the prices have gone up so much in the past three or four years since the last time I was in one that there was nothing I needed enough to spend that much more on it. Not their fault, everybody's prices have gone way up. If I'd seen something on sale that I needed I might have gotten it though . Part of the reason for coming here was that I saw somebody carrying one of their cute tote bags and it made me want to get one. I ended up getting two because the little elephant one was so cute. Their clearance rack had real good prices at half off so I got some sprouted whole-grain bread, some sour cream and some organic tortillas from there. I had to buy a bag of Basil just because it smells so good. I got some of their bulk ranch seasoning to go with the sour cream and one of those lavender sporks for three dollars, remembering that just a couple years ago they used to be $2. Ultimately I was happy with what I ended up with. And I have to say, when I smelled the wonderful aroma before I even walked into the store, I had that familiar feeling of being home because it smells like the other stores I had been to, the comforting aroma of herbs and spices and essential oils all mixed together.

Air Guitar is in the same plaza, and I had been in once before and enjoyed a delicious sandwich. We had also seen on Instagram that Air Guitar sells big chocolate chip cookies from Urban Cookie, which was probably the deciding factor. We both got the breakfast sandwich, mine with the standard croissant waffle, and my friend's with an everything bagel. It was delicious with the egg, bacon, and cheese. The croissant added a sweetness to it, so I think I'll try it with a bagel next time. The cookie was warm and a bit over-baked, so it didn't have a gooey center as expected. Taste was pretty good though. There was a long table inside by the windows, but it was almost full from a large group watching the World Cup match and we didn't want to intrude. We stood off to the side to eat while watching the match too. One of the guys was so nice and offered us a couple of open seats. There were 15 minutes left in the match, so we stayed. It was so fun, especially with everyone dressed in USA gear and cheering. I never would've even thought to watch sports here, and now I might consider it for future games! I mean they've got a lot of food options, coffee, beer, and more.

Whatever else happened during that visit, those cookies were a VERY good introduction to the bakery. I have not actually been into Rise Up Bakery myself, so this review is based entirely on the delightful and delectable cookies I got to try. There was a sugar cookie, oatmeal raisin, chocolate chip, M&M, and several others. I started by pinching off a little piece of one, then another, and then another. Before long I felt like such a little piggy because I had sampled nearly every cookie in the box. The problem was that every time I tried a new one, it was just as good, if not better, than the one before it. I kept thinking I had found my favorite, only to change my mind with the next bite. And these cookies were BIG hoggers too, probably around 6 inches across. These are not little dainty cookies you mindlessly nibble on. They have some size to them, and thankfully the flavor matches. So while I can't review the bakery itself, the atmosphere, or the service just yet, I can absolutely review the cookies. Based on those alone, Rise Up Bakery has definitely gotten my attention. Four stars for now, and mostly because I feel like I need to actually visit the bakery before handing over the fifth.
