Every time I'm back in VA on a Saturday I make sure to stop by the Reston Farmer's Market. They've got some of the best produce in the area. The apples and pears are especially fantastic so I recommend trying and buying some since there are samples of most. If you go right around when it opens it's not too crazy but by 9am it's pretty crowded and I don't recommend parking in (or near) the lot itself. I'm addicted to carbs, so the real reason for my trip is always the bakeries that are tucked into the back of the market next to the lake itself. Nordic Knots has a "Pretzel Croissant" that's amazing. It's basically a really flakey, crisp croissant washed with lye and topped with pretzel salt to give it that real "pretzel" flavor. The pretzels themselves are fine, but the croissant is the pro move. They go quick with some aunties lining up 15 minutes before they open (which is always a bit late). My Cravingz is my true destination and it's basically the last stall in the marked (coming from the parking lot). The Turkish bakery has a cafe in Manassas but there are a few things you can only get here. The guy is always super friendly and is happy to explain the good to anyone unsure. My go-to breakfast is a cheese açma and coffee with a simit and nutella pogaça to go. The açma is one of the best pastries I've ever had. Flakey and buttery like a croissant but with a bit more chew and stuffed to the gills with high-quality feta. They'll warm it up for you on the spot, which I highly recommend if you're eating it there. If you're looking for a heavier breakfast of lunch the borek is great but a bit much for me that early. read more

This is one of the greatest local Farmer's Markets I have visited in my travels. There are bigger ones in London, Vancouver, and Victoria, but this one is in the top ten. I flew to DC for an end of life celebration, looking for something to take to share because grandma said you don't show up with just your hat in your hand. I was blown away at the number of produce vendors. We have a large market at the Pearl in San Antonio and lucky to see two or three produce vendors with limited selection. Parking is the most challenging aspect here. I didn't even try the surface lot as it looked packed. I was able to find street parking a few blocks away. This market must have had at least a dozen produce vendors. And the selection was incredible. The vegetables and tomatoes looked incredible. But I was flying back and could not enjoy them. I did buy some cherries and strawberries to share with the local family. They were so fresh and everyone enjoyed them. read more

I grew up in Reston and still have family in the area. When I was there, the Saturday market at Lake Anne was more of a craft fair. I was very happy to see they have a full-blown farmers market now. We stopped by in November on what I think was their last or second to last market of the season. There were plenty of vendors selling everything from produce to baked goods to meat. I did notice that several vendors were from other states, so they don't necessarily restrict it to very local purveyors. Definitely a nice farmers market with a wide selection and friendly vibe. read more

One of the largest and most impressive farmers markets with fresh produce and large selection of food stalls. As an avid fan of farmers markets, I've been to over 20+ FreshFarm & Central Farm Markets in MD, VA, and DC and the Reston market is among my favorites. There are over 20 food stall and produce vendors as well as several craft vendors around the lake. Lots of selection! I really enjoyed a fresh blueberry cobbler at one of the food stalls. I bought 2 packs of blueberries which stayed plump after 10 days. I got fresh green beans, red potatoes, and corn. I bought handmade spinach Tagliatelle and cheese pansotti (large raviolis) from Cavanna Pasta. They were sold out of the eggplant parm, which is quite tasty! With my fresh produce and pasta, I cooked up a storm for a dinner party and everyone enjoyed it! We made a casserole out of the veggies. Both pasta dishes were a big hit, the spinach Tagliatelle was really soft and goes well with pesto. The Pansotti is light with a bold flavor of cheese and garlic blends well with a marinara sauce. Will be back for more pasta dishes! The entrees from GreenFare were a hit or a miss. I really enjoyed the Organic Thai Kale Quinoa, I had several helpings throughout the course of the week and it keeps well. I wasn't a fan of the sweet potato lasagna. It just tasted funny and sadly threw it away. I also wish the vendor refrigerated the entrees at the farmer's market as they were in direct heat, which may have contributed to the quality of the food. Get here early as things gets sold out and selection starts getting limited after 11am. Parking may require some patience. Must find street parking since it will be hard to find parking in the parking lot unless you go right when it opens. No Dogs Allowed into the market. The market will have fresh seasonal fruits and veggies, plants/flowers, preserves, local honey, baked goods, delicious food and so much more. Go farther inside and you'll find jewelry, handcrafted items, and artworks. If you see kettle corn, salteñas and empanadas...try them all! Very delicious! If you are looking for food. Wonderful farmer's market by Lake Anne, Reston - with a huge selection of local fruits, veggies, baked goods, flowers, vendors, and everything in between. The location is fabulous; parking is never an issue and it's a great area to walk around after you've picked up what you need. I'm a fan of the Reston Farmer's Market. It may not be the largest farmers market out there, but I'm glad that it exists and enjoy it for its convenience. Located in Lake Anne Village Center, you will find good quality veggies, meats, milk, baked goods, unique art, handcrafted jewlry, handmade soaps, fresh popcorn, clothes, spices, etc. Things are pricey at the farmers market, but you are supporting local farmers and small businesses. I often find unique items here and they serve as great gifts. We always enjoy our goods from the farmers market and the vendors are always sweet and helpful. The farmers market is held on Saturdays from 8 am-noon. It starts in May and goes through November. Parking can be difficult to find, your best bet is street parking. read more

Puzzled by the first review's details compared to the accurate location listing, but okay. Dogs banned, don't bring them; plenty of signs up stating as much. May 9th through October 29th this year, 8 am to noon at Lake Anne Plaza. The farmer's market takes up a large part of the parking lot, with miscellaneous kitschy vendor booths flowing into the walkway towards the pier: bags, skirts, scarves, art, jewelry, the usual street fair stuff. I really recommend glancing at the booth map online to organize your produce shopping list, I found it immensely helpful. A ton of people had to park along North Shore; when I saw the mess in the parking lot and along the street, I turned and decided to drive home and walk back (initially took the car since I needed to hit the bank that morning too; I'm not that lazy, okay). I passed on the kettle corn and strawberries but couldn't resist a cup of chocolate chip ice cream on a nice sunny morning. Happily walked the three blocks home with a tub of applewood smoked mozzarella, a dozen eggs, two pork chops, and some cheap inspirational art. If my windows reliably faced the sun I'd invest in some herbage. I'll definitely be back this weekend for fruit, veggies, and breakfast/dinner meats. I'm incredibly happy to have this so close to home, and I feel far less sad about missing out on the timeframe for this year's CSA shares. read more

Get there early so that you can find a decent place to park. We got there around 8:30 or a little after that and it was filling up fast. I was really surprised by the size of this farmer's market - in a good way. There was a good amount of fruit/produce and a couple offering options for the carnivore. They just opened for the season on May 3rd, so I can only imagine how much more will be coming! I've never been to the Lake Anne area and was pleased to see a good amount of crafts there too. There was a lot I wanted to buy, but I went with the intent to buy produce (The Farm At Sunnyside?) and some bacon (yumminess from Ole Pioneer's Kitchen). I accomplished that goal and went further by purchasing some goat cheese (the chevre is really good, from Cherry Glen), and went gaga over the starchy goods at Baguette Republic. The husband and I skipped breakfast because we knew there'd be things to eat at the market. From Baguette Republic, we bought ham & cheese croissants and a slice of their french toast. I loved it all and it went well with my cappuccino from the Lake Anne Coffee House! Some of the produce farmers develop really long lines, so you may want to buy all your produce as soon as you get there. We didn't buy any flowers this time, but are looking forward to it in the future. There's also a good amount of fresh herbs too. I was going to buy some to make my own pesto, but remembered how lazy I can be. I know pesto isn't difficult to make, but now you know my laziness level! I was told a band usually comes out to play, but don't recall whether I heard any music. There's also a kettle corn vendor and a balloon animal maker! All good stuff. Anyone who knows me can tell you I'd rather have a beautiful multi-colored basket of tomatoes than a bouquet of cut flowers--and this is the place to glean a gorgeous melange of variegated eggplants, summer peaches, the gamut of summer squash, plums, herbs, and my favorite heirloom tomatoes!!! I love to be there when the bell rings and then descend upon the agricultural finery, shining like mother earth's jewelry in the morning light. Samples of Persian cucumbers, pluots, and other stone fruit grace the tables of vendors from miles around who drive in the early morning with their freshly-picked produce for sale. Young girls with armpit hair and freckles wearing "save the planet" tshirts will gleefully tell you how their organic produce can be used in the best ways and explain the difference between the eightball, zucchini, and Magda squash varieties. At the end of the summer, when heirloom tomatoes go for $10 for 10 pounds, I spend hours in the kitchen peeling, seeding, chopping, and cooking the red, yelolow, orange, green, and purple beauties into some of the best (if strangely-hued) sauce with most, while making gorgeous mixed fattoush with the rest. You can stroll down the plaza past the farmers' stalls to the kitschy arts and crafts section of the market bordering the lake and enjoy some of your purchase (last year, it was goat cheese, honey, and the last of summer's figs) on one of the lakeside benches while watching seniors clad in boat shoes and nautical ball caps while they have a remote controlled regatta With their tiny little yachts. We were happy overall with the vendors. There was a nice selection. It was crowded as all get-out. Do not hesitate to ask the Farmers how they grow and raise their produce before you buy. It is extremely eye-opening...some of them are candid and tell you that they grow organically, some tell you that they do not have certification yet, but grow eco-organically, some are forthcoming about what pesticides/herbicides they use, and some....don't want to answer the questions: we avoid these vendors! I do not mind spending a little more money buying conscientiously locally grown veggies from the farmer at the market- however, when someone at the Farmer's Market aggressively AVOIDS answering my questions about his/her growing practices and I can buy those same veggies organic at Trader Joe's for less of an expense....well that's a different story. We were also dismayed by all the dogs running around peeing and pooping, despite the sign that says, "no dogs". It is unhygienic and I wish people either 1) obeyed this rule or 2) took control of their animals better. This was worth seeing once, but we still prefer the smaller Smart-Market in Reston on Wednesdays...less people, less crowded. read more

The Reston Town Center Association just began hosting a weekly Farmer's Market in May. It is being held on Thursdays from 3:30-7:30 PM at the Town Square (directly across the street from Iceberry, Il Fornaio, and the Midtown Condos). I went yesterday and am now super excited to have this market right in my backyard, since I work in one of the large offices in the RTC. I was quite impressed considering it is less than a month old... a relatively small but good combination of vendors (probably about 10-15?) selling locally grown/made fresh fruits and vegetables, salsa, herbs, flowers, dog treats, popcorn, peanut brittle, cheese, a wide variety of meat, and even wine. My first and only purchase (didn't bring enough cash!) was an herb garden containing parsley, oregano, thyme, sage, and basil all able to be grown and maintained in one compact flower pot. I am pretty far from a green thumb, so this is a new and convenient concept to me that I did not even know possible. I love using fresh herbs but hate continuously buying them in the grocery store only to have them go bad days later. At $12, this seemed like a steal and setting it up outside my Arlington apartment made me feel very natural and organic... we'll see how it goes :) Next week I'll be trying the cheese and salsa, as well as some produce. The vendors were enthusiastic and helpful, and there were tons of samples being given out. I'm always a sucker for samples. There was a decent number of people walking around - a combination of professionals who work in the RTC and families with young children, which is pretty much the typical clientele of all things in Reston. The hours are ideal... very convenient and a great excuse for a late afternoon break from the office. I'm looking forward to making this farmer's market a regular part of my summer. read more

Full disclosure that one of the main reasons I love this place is that it is walking distance from my house. Regardless, I've been to a few markets and this is a great one! It's quite larger with a little bit of everything: - several fruit and veggie vendors (Reids Orchard's apple cider is delicious). - several places to get baked goods from baguettes to cookies to pies. - a couple creameries, one specializing in goat cheese and the other having butter, delicious yogurt and cheeses. - several places to get meat (lamb, beef, chicken, pork) and eggs. - local honey. - flowers and herbs. - salsa, hummus, sauces, olive oil (garlic olive oil and fig balsamic are a must). - pickles (their wasabi green beans are killer!). After you're done with the market, you can head over to the plaza where there are more vendors selling all sorts of stuff, from art to jewelry to clothing. You can also eat at one of the restaurants or just hang out by the lake too. Like most markets, the majority of vendors are cash only but there are a few that take cards via Square. There is also some token thing but I don't know all the details. read more

*4.5* After checking out a few local farmers markets, I think Reston has a lot to offer. As some other reviews pointed out, there are some "crafts" vendors, but who cares? Isn't it better to have it than to not have it? If you don't want to her crafts, don't! Simple as that. But for the people who do, it's nice to have that option. Or in my case, a lot of the time I don't know that I want something until I see it! And Reston has a ton of room to spare, so I'm sure they aren't kicking any vendors out to make space for all those scrapbooking soccer moms (and everyone else who enjoys scrapbooking... Me. What!!?!) Okay, so I've talked very little about what the vendors actually have and all that, but there's some amazing produce here, along with the empanadas stand, dairy, bread, seafood, and more! Definitely worth checking out at least once! The only downside is that parking can get tricky, so it's better to arrive earlier, as with all farmers markets, I'm sure. read more

Went for my first visit last month, and loved it so much I brought my mom back last week. We ventured out with the baby early in the morning before everything was picked over (and before it got to hot). The lot was packed, we had to park on North Shore Drive and walk a little bit. Lots of vendors to choose from. 7 Many vendors were helpful in discussing their produce (my mom was entralled by the vendor with seven different kinds of tomatoes) and many offered free samples. Musical entertainment is nice! There are craft/clothing vendors but we didn't venture that far. read more

The Reston farmer's market has been around for awhile. The vendors are nice and friendly while offering helpful advice. This location can be difficult fir parking if you go during busy times. I found that if you go toward opening or closing it is the best time. The variety of the booths was great because you can get veggies, fruits, kettle corn, ice cream, breads, pastries, goat cheese, meats, hummus, seafood, etc. Also If you head to the back area of Lake Anne you can explore the craft tables. read more

Besides supporting local businesses, it is a perfect time to take advantage of fresh produce, delicious foods, and beautiful flowers. Afterwards, you may find yourself wandering over to Lake Anne plaza which has several restaurants, boutiques, and even a nanobrewery! Wish they expanded to year round like some of the bigger markets in alexandria and leesburg. unlike the other markets in Fairfax county, this one is rather large, and you really can get everything you need for your groceries: breads, eggs, cheese, meats, fruits, veggies, and even other specialty items like ice cream, cookies, popcorn (the best kettlecorn ever - colonial kettle corn), and virginia peanuts. I highly recommend coming here over a grocery store, the food tastes REAL, unlike anything you will get at Giant or Safeway. And I love to see the interaction between people, their food, and those that put their heart and soul into growing it for us! Its so human and beautiful! read more

I've been going to the market for a few years, most weekends. Love to have a stroll through the farmers market to pickup the many fresh fruits and veggies, even meats, and eggs. A nice bouquet of flowers can even be found. I also highly recommend visiting the many craft vendors. You can find original art, cards, hats, tables, books....almost anything you need. My husband and I went to this farmers market today and had a great time. We only had 30 minutes to shop and the produce vendors pack up right on time. But we got what we needed and were able to walk around after and check out the artisan stalls. We got delicious spiced honey and some yummy fruits and veggies. I went to the market for the first time this morning, even though we live so close to Lake Anne plaza! My 9-year-old son wanted to check it out, so we parked in the lots across the street by the tennis courts (highly recommended!) We would have walked, but it was pouring rain. We got there early, which was great. The rain soon let up, and my son got a blueberry scone from someone with a French accent. It was good that we got there early, because later, there was a pretty decent line at that booth! He had some intriguing-looking French toast, too. The fruit samples are awesome. We got yellow peaches after comparing the samples from several stalls. We also got some goat cheese and a big tomato. I wanted to get more, but I was a little overwhelmed by the selection. Towards Lake Anne was a stand called Uncommon Knits: http://www.uncommonknits.com/products.html I bought 2 dish towels and ordered 4 placemats. Hand-woven, beautiful, and a lovely booth! I just started going to the Reston Farmers market this summer and look forward to it every weekend that I can go. It is smaller than the Falls Church one but quite a bit larger than the Oakton one. Fruits & Vegetables: I can't say that I have a favorite veg/fruit vendor since I end up going to a few of them based on what I need for the week but they all seem great. The mini yellow/orange tomatoes are like candy. All the items also seem to last and stay fresh longer too. Meat & Eggs: I get all my meat and eggs at the Smith family Farm booth as they give great advice on how to prepare the various cuts of meat. All of their meat seems to be leaner but if you cook it the way they suggest amazingly tender and excellent flavor. Great ground beef too. I can't even buy meat at the grocery store anymore. I got addicted to their maple sausages, and I don't even like sausages or maple for that matter but these are in a whole different league. As they say their animals don't do drugs and they are grass fed and humanely raised. Ice Cream: Simplicity is the name and it is a little pricey but so worth it. I especially love the vanilla which is typically a boring flavor for me but not this one. Yum. Crafts and Art: Great to buy quick gifts for people as needed especially if you want something different and don't feel like going to a mall. A great variety of vendors so they did a good job if that was on purpose. The items are actually nice and not as cheesy or overpriced like a craft fair can be. Parking: If you drive there, it may look crowded at times but it is not too hard to find parking as you can also park along the edges that wrap around the whole parking lot area too. The first time I drove I almost gave up and left but kept driving around the circle and found street parking real close. Earlier in the morning when it first opens is def better and you can even find a spot in the lot and best choices of all items too. read more

Reid's Orchards, one of the vendors at the Reston Farmer's Market, is AMAZING! Reid's summer peaches are some of the sweetest and most delicately flavored that I've ever tasted, and apparently they have fabulous blackberries, because everyone was asking for them. They had all sorts of interesting types of apples, including some that I've never heard of before... Of course, I'm also a sucker for the logo on their truck, which includes a happy smiling tree.
