Although the servers were not always attentive, they were always helpful and patient, which is uncommon in HK. One thing to keep in mind, call ahead doesn't really work. We had to wait awhile, but that was okay, we hung out outside; the weather wasn't too bad that evening, although it would've been nice to get an ETA to know that we could've run to the grocery store. We got our boxes and stepped outside. Because there had been a large group also in the store and the staff seemed a bit frazzled, we decided to check our boxes. Luckily, we did, because both were pepperoni. They were nice when they understood the dilemma, but kept insisting we ordered 2 pepperoni, although the receipt said otherwise. So, more waiting for a fresh pizza, but this time it was faster. As for the taste, it was a big, fat "meh." Kind of bland, didn't taste like much. The garlic knots had a weird chemical taste to them? But, the food was pretty cheap and conveniently located to our hotel. Definitely wouldn't crave a return, but if I were starving? Desperate times, desperate measures.

I have been eating at Cipriani Hong Kong for the past 12 years and what stands out is the consistency of service, quality of food and strict adherence to tradition...It's an institution with an amazing history (well worth reading up on) and a team that remain true to their strong Venetian roots. They are also notable for creating some Italian classics such as the Bellini (the original and the best - there's also a non-alcoholic version) and carpaccio. The dining experience at Cipriani Hong Kong is steeped in history and culture. The menu is extensive and includes the Cipriani classics, which luckily will never change, but also has variety at the edges, which allows frequent patrons to try something different every time they visit, should they so desire. Amongst the classics, Baked White Tagliolini with Ham (even better with green tagliolini) stands out - a rich shallow plate of pasta with a béchamel type sauce, strong tasting ham to give flavour and topped with parmesan and baked to heavenly perfection to give a crispy topping. Served as a starter or main. Scampi alla Carlina with Rice Pilaf is also a favourite - fresh and meaty scampi with a tangy tomato based sauce paired with Cipriani's lightly fried rice (also cooked to perfection). Amongst the starters, Avocado & Cherry Tomatoes Salad not only contains the freshest of both ingredients, is super healthy and tastes amazing with just the right amount of seasoning, but is also visually appealing with its mix of bright greens and reds. The Sea Scallops Carpaccio with Lemon and Olive Oil is also outstanding - paper thin slices of fresh sea scallop, layered to cover the plate with a touch of olive oil and sea salt, and half a lemon on the side, the juice of which provides a sharp compliment to the briny taste of the scallops. The risottos and pastas, are served perfectly al dente (more so than at any other Italian restaurant I have experienced) and the sauces are traditional. Try the Sea Urchin and Bottarga spaghetti for something really special and go off-menu for Spaghetti alla Tang, which was created for co-owner David Tang - a light and flavoursome dish with olive oil, prawns and chilli. Mains include fish and meat options, with must haves including Chilean Sea Bass in Miso Glaze (similar to Saikyo Yaki from Japan) and Veal Piccata al Limone (thinly sliced roast veal with a delicate lemon based gravy). Although not an obvious option, the Black Angus Beef Burger with home made chips is outstanding and extremely satisfying. And then the desserts, where the cake options are brought to the table in a theatrical show and introduced in all their sweet detail...The chocolate cake is heavy (in a good way) and rich whilst the Vanilla Meringue Cake is a light and fluffy classic. Tiramisu, Affogato (with home made ice-cream) and Fresh Berries with Vanilla ice-cream are all delicious. The drink selection is also wide and full of classics. The Espresso Martini is a great way to end a fantastic meal but also between courses try the Sgroppino (lemon sorbet, vodka and prosecco). The house wines are solid, especially when on a budget. The 3 course daily lunch menus provide good value whilst the dinner set menu (typically 5 courses) allows guests to try a variety of signature dishes in a combination arranged by the head chef. There's also an outstanding brunch buffet on Saturday's which includes all of the classic dishes together with pizza and roast meats, where the dishes are replaced regularly to keep them fresh - unlike any buffet I have tried before and extremely good value considering the quality and taste. It only had six tables with brightly colored chairs and a small bar area, it's truly perfect for the area to gather solo or with a small group. I immediately loved the vibe. It was a still considered a "holiday" here with CNY still going strong, so it was probably quiet for a Saturday afternoon/evening. Our sever immediately greeted us and allowed us to choose our table. We knew we wanted pizza before she even handed us the menu. We chose a white Sauvignon Blanc which was cool and refreshing to sip on as we waited for our pizza. Surprisingly, it was quite quick! Out came a crispy, thin crusted, meat covered pizza which we gazed at and then dove into. A "small" sized pie was 6 slices. And from the photo, you can see it was "large"enough for the two of us! Il Bel Paese brings a sliver of Italy to Hong Kong, more in the way that they are understaffed and completely do not understand to idea of rushing than their food. To me that adds to the charm and teaches one patience and how to simply enjoy a social occasion. The manager, an Italian man with interesting facial hair, strolls around in his bright colored pants correcting the pronunciation of each patron's order. "Yes, yes, it is coming." He says with a smile whenever asked about the food or bill. The restaurant has the majority of its tables just outside its doors. You can imagine how chilled-out a feel it is on a clear sunny day with an Aperol Spritz in one hand, it makes it hard to argue with any of the waiters! The Italian food they serve tastes authentic, meaning very good. The dishes I'd recommend are the pesto penne pasta with pine nuts, an easy meal for lunch or an afternoon snack, their gnocchi is sublime - one of my favorites - and their salmon dish is also rather delicious. The only problem being that the portions are a bit on the small side leaving one hungry after the meal. Worry not! They have a gelato corner within the restaurant, besides its small shop of Italian ingredients, that offer a range of sugary good flavors. If you are preparing to visit Il Bel Paese be sure to do it in a happy mood without a time constraint. If you can do that you'll have a much fuller experience, learn a few Italian words, and maybe, just maybe, forget about work the next day!
