Romanian food is hard to come by in Brussels. This place doesn't look like much but it dishes out some homely Romanian grub at a very reasonable price.
Now you better have a fearsome appetite if you hope to tackle both a starter and a main, and I'm not going to mention dessert. We shared a bunch of thing between the three of us and were happy they did doggy bags as we were not able to finish it all (and we can eat quite a bit!).
As you sit down there will be bread with a cream cheese spread and some raw veg to get you settled. For starters you can try their cold cuts platter which is really nice and absolutely huge! Talk of value for money, this is good. You'll already be feeling a little full after the introduction, but mains will simply put an end to even the hungriest. We had a variety of meat dishes, all accompanied by polenta topped with grated cheese, horseradish and cabbage. It all comes together very nicely as some real family food that you could picture eating at grandma's on a cold winter's night.
The thing is, it is all really simple. It is certainly authentic, with lots of fellow Romanians posting their delight about this place, and the food is well cooked. I just felt overall it was too heavy and a little too greasy, but without any real point of comparison I have to stand on the fence with this one. I certainly did not leave enthralled, but neither was I unhappy or unsatisfied.
One thing that did really stand out was the bottle of wine we had that was quite lovely. Romania has good wines and I'd recommend you help the food down with some. It is well worth it.
You might want to stay clear of the door area as it can get a little chilly in winter. Service is friendly and always good to see Romanian food prepared by Romanians for a bunch of Romanian (more than half the restaurant seemed Romanian and colleagues tend to agree that is the general trend).
Overall it was a decent meal. There is nothing fancy and little that is really memorable, but it is always nice to try something new and this place is an absolute bargain, excellent value for money. read more
