My wife and I have been going to La Monserrate restaurant for over 40 years, as well as dozens of…read moretimes for business meals. This place has been an icon in Ponce, always Great food, service and priceless view. I moved away from Ponce 17 years ago but would eat here every time we came back for vacation, maybe 8 times a year. This year, we went in March and it was bad. Both food and service were not good at all. Something had changed drastically. Went back this month of May, to see if it was simply a fluke. This time it was really bad. We asked and were told that the original owner passed away last year and the family sold the business. Everything has gone bad and decided that this was our last time eating there. It's really heart breaking to see one of the few great restaurants in Ponce go like this. I foresee they will end up closing very soon. Anyway, in short. Prices were raised to ridiculous levels. Food serving size is now about 70% what they used to be. Side salad which was always included now is sold separate. Drinks, if available, are not well prepared. Many items on the menu are not available for lack of groceries. Crab tastes like canned, not fresh. Lobster is hard and tasteless. Juices are from concentrate. We were a party of 6 and they gave us 3 menus, because they didn't have many (we were only 1 of 2 tables with people). Menus were damaged by water and barely readable. Was charged $5 for glass bottle of water which they re-fill from a filtering machine. Such a priceless location now damaged. This used to be a go-to place for tourists but they will now leave with a bad experience. On the flip side, there are some old and new restaurants in Ponce which are quite good. La Casa del Chef is always great. Tablas in front of the Cathedral also good. Campioni and Rincon Argentino also very good.

Ambience is so awesome. Parking can be challenging. The…read moregreeting of customers needs work. It is very unwelcoming. The service was slow for not being that busy. Food in general is fine. The crab rice really did not have crab in it so more like crab flavored. I asked the waiter if the whole fish was local and fresh, yes was the response. It was neither and over cooked, flavor was ok.The sides, salads, and appetizer were good. In the end if you are hungry, can spend the time, and spend some money this is maybe the place.

I realize the place is closed now but just want to add my voice. Around 2001-2006 I had several…read morevisits to Ponce and each time we went to Yeyo's. I love the place. The langosta was great. The Cuban music playing in the place was wonderful. SAdly my company sold our properties in PR and also I am retired so no more Yeyo's, even if they were still around.

This place has seen better days!…read more It is one of the several seafood restaurants along Rt 2 in Ponce, right on the Caribbean Sea shore. Since it has an outdoor patio that looks westwards, it has the most unobstructed view of the sunset in the winter months, when the sun is in the south. I had eaten here some time ago, when I had just stopped by for dinner and did not have any previous knowledge of this place. I had liked the view and the food, especially the dessert, so much that I wanted to return, but did not remember the name of the restaurant or exactly how to get here. When I searched on the internet for a restaurant around the location with similar menu items, I found Pito's, a neighboring restaurant (you may read my review of that restaurant), and realized it was not the one I was looking for, but still ate there since I was already there. Today, I renewed my search with much vigor, and finally found this restaurant again! I just finished dinner here, only to realize that the food and service was not the same anymore, although the view is still as perfect as ever! I had the conch cooked in onion and butter, and it was good, but not great. With it, I had the rice with crab meat, which tasted good; the crab meat was shredded and almost blended with the rice. My favorite dessert here, which I especially came back for, was the guava shells stuffed with Puerto Rican cheese. I was only given the guava shells, and was told that they did not have the cheese tonight! I then ordered tres leches cake, and got a small, irregular piece of the cake, which was so dry that I had to use the syrup from the guava shells to moisten it. Tres leches cake is normally very moist because it is soaked in three different kinds of milk! When I got the bill, I noticed I was charged for both desserts, and I just went ahead and paid it because I did not want to get into an argument. The guys who were working here tonight seemed young and good-natured, and I got the feeling that they just didn't know any better. The service was very inattentive (even though the restaurant was empty), and when I was given the credit card receipt to add tip and sign, I was not given a pen with it. It took me five minutes to get my server's attention and ask him to bring me a pen. 3 stars for food 2 stars for dessert 4 stars for the view for an average of 3 stars.
