This is simply of the best restaurants I have ever been to- both in terms of food and service. I genuinely would not be surprised if this place eventually gets a Michelin star, that's how good my experience was.
Can Marques is a family-owned restaurant currently on its fourth generation. All of their ingredients are bought daily from the Municipal Market across the street. They have a menu del dia every weekday that's worth €15 for a 3-course meal, and it's hands-down the best deal you can get anywhere. There are about 3 options each for appetizer, main, and dessert. For my meal, I got:
Roasted vegetables: One of the most beautifully arranged plates I've ever had the opportunity to eat. I can't remember the orange sauce drizzled on the outer ring, but it was tomato and cream-based.
Rabbit and fries: I wasn't a stranger to rabbit, and I particularly enjoyed this version. The rabbit was stewed in a sweet and sour gravy, and the meat easily fell from the bone. The fries themselves were extremely crunchy, probably twice-fried to get the perfect texture.
Flan: I was never a fan of flan, so I was only a tiny bit wary when my waitress recommended it to me. I'm so glad to have tried it now, because now I realize how delicious flan can be. This one was coconut-based with caramel sauce that was thinner than syrup.
You also get free bread and olives while you're waiting. Not kidding, I ate the best olives of my life here, and also the bread was perfectly baked.
This place doesn't cater to tourists. Like most traditional Spanish restaurants, it opens for lunch only after 1:00 pm. There is no English menu, and my waitress spoke only Spanish to me. But Can Marques is a restaurant you absolutely have to visit when you visit Girona. read more
