This is a place that showed up on Yelp as having traditional Swiss culinary dishes. It was one of my last nights visiting the beautiful Basel Switzerland and I decided to visit here. It was a cooler evening, but, I sat in their patio area and had cheese fondue. It was a pleasant experience, and good service. A lovely authentic Swiss dining experience in the heart of Basel. Fondue is abundant in this town and I made sure to take advantage of all of it. Being my last night in Basel before heading up to Paris, I had to get one last fondue fix and Walliser Kanne did not disappoint. Sadly the fondue alone, it all its ooey gooey glory, is enough to fill up even a seasoned eater's belly. I had the Pumpkin Soup, bits of bread in fondue, lots of Baseler wine and was stuffed to the gills all too quickly; I suddenly wished I had a second stomach. I really wanted delve into the tableside Wiener Schnitzel, but it was just too much. I saw a lot of other diners doing it and I was envious - it smelled and looked awesome. The service was very efficient and friendly. The food came out so fast, that we were done eating in the matter of an hour. I wouldn't have minded sticking around longer, but we wanted to bar hop a bit on the way back up that big hill to our hotel. Wearing heeled boots in this town is a bad idea! My only concern is that Walliser Kanne is not cheap. Switzerland is notoriously expensive, but I did not feel the fondue here should have warranted such a hefty price tag at $50 per person. During my visit in Switzerland, I had similar wine and fondue that was much more reasonably priced. All in all a very good experience. I hope to visit Switzerland again very soon! read more

Having lunch at the Walliser Kanne was one of the best meals I had my entire vacation. We had the specials that day which were a steak with kraut butter and a pork schnitzel with a mushroom type sauce and egg noodles that was to die for. We sat at one of their outdoor tables so we didn't experience the tableside cooking. Service at the end of the meal is quite slow so we were ready to settle the bill long before the waiter produced it, but this seems to be typical of every place we ate at in Europe. Best schnitzel in Basel. Every time. Service was very good although a little hectic due to the Jazz festival and the crowds of people packed on the street right outside. Had the Rösti during this visit and our guest had the bratwurst. Excellent on all accounts! read more

Really great, but can still be topped. Lots of meat eater choices, but the vegetarian was a little bit boring.

Cheese fondue was spectacular. Very good bier selection. Atmosphere was warm and festive. Great place for fondue.

This was our first dinner on a two-week European trip with the kids. The ambiance was classic and so was the Swiss food. The fondue was fabulous (truffle was our choice - delicious). The Wienerschnitzel was also excellent. The server was friendly, but not forthcoming with recommendations. He just said, "Everything is good." He clearly understood the mechanics of serving, but was not nuanced in the artistry of serving. Expensive, but probably worth it for the traditional Swiss experience. read more

We had a meal between lunch and dinner with a short version of menu. Both raclette and fondue were hopeless and extremely overpriced, green salad was spoilt with vinegar and schnitzel for kids was dry as piece of wood. Would never recommend this place. read more

I've eaten here on 3 separate occasions and always enjoyed the food. Authentic German menu finely prepared and quality meals every time.

This is an expense account kind of restaurant you go to when you are traveling. It is good, charming and $$$ but it delivers.

Terrible food and terrible service. Served greasy, soggy, bad quality food. The food was so greasy and unappetizing that I had to send it back untouched and order an alternative. Funny enough, the bill came with one charge BUT it was for the more expensive inedible version that was sent back untouched to the kitchen. When asked why they chose to charge me for the dish that I returned as opposed to the dish that I actually had, the "manager" Marco Della T replied that it was not his problem that I didn't eat it. Apparently when you have an American accent, greasy soggy versions of Wiener schnitzel are supposed to be ok and appreciated or you will be penalized. Additionally, I was instructed by another team member that next time if I didn't want my schnitzel soggy, and floating in fat, I should specifically say so!!!! So the bottomline is 1) I was served horrible inedible food, then 2) I was ripped off, and finally 3) I was insulted. Terrible tourist trap, bad food, arrogant service and, above all, rude people. read more

Traditional Swiss cuisine in an upscale setting. The fondue is great for a restaurant (although homemade by a Swiss is much better). Other Swiss specialities are also very tasty. For simple food the prices are high, but not unreasonable for Switzerland. read more
