a lunch restaurant of almost 150 years history!famous in Denmark! amazing place to try!

Info on the place

Pro: Over the top helpful staff in the front and waiting. Yummy food and drinks. Con: Place is old, not for the handicap. Small rooms and tight seating. 3 hours layover in CPH and a gal on our flight in told us about this ancient restaurant to try out, she was right about the suggestion. We metro to the nearest station (Norreport) from the airport and walked about 5 minutes to the restaurant. We were early from our booked online appointment (while on aircraft wifi) and told the host that we need to back to CPH in 1.5 hours for a flight, he seated us right away, bless him for this, we were ready to be rejected and leave the place. The waiter asked if we need help and after confirming that we have no clue what we were doing, he spent about 5 minutes going over menu, history, and eating culture for the city and establishment. Shrimp and Egg salad - over bread, just what was listed, with a twist of lemon. outstanding light mayo. Salmon with potato - fresh salmon with tons of herbs. Smoked salmon with spinach - the mixed spinach with mayo was more impressive than the smoked salmon. Washed it all down with local beer and liquor, was told to sip the liquor than take a bit of your food, don't shoot it. Worth the fun trip on the Metro!

Traditional Danish sandwiches. I had Heidi's Potato Sandwich and my husband had the Egg and Shrimp classic.

If using ClassPass; their prices are not what is listed in the app! They mark them up. Also the shop owner is mean to her techs and yells at them a lot!

Plaice fillet - "a Dane"

A classic danish restaurant l, a great spot to grab a beer and a Smørrebrød. I tried the smoked duck breast and the Plaice fillet - "a Dane".

What a wonderful restaurant. We sat in the back dining room, a very cozy, warm traditional room with a chandelier at every table. Our server Juliette was so funny and accommodating. She really explained the wonderful menu and how to order and pare with traditional whiskey pallet cleanser. Everything was phenomenal! Definitely our favorite luncheon while in Copenhagen. Highly recommend!

Danish lunch!

Copenhagen is a city of fine dining, including the creative and exciting new Nordic cuisine. I was looking for the old Nordic cuisine and discovered Schonnemann's traditional Danish lunch. We made reservations a couple of weeks before our trip, which turned out to be smart as several people were turned away without reservations at the same time we arrived. The service was excellent: here is the English menu sir, and our server provided good suggestions and tips. How do we choose between the 160 varieties of akvavit? Here's a taste. Suggestion - sip it with your food, don't just down it as a shot. What size? Medium, large or Danish? Danish please. We stuck to the classics, egg and shrimp, and roast beef sandwiches, plus a crab salad and a salmon sandwich. Each was beautiful, rich and delicious. The ingredients were fresh and perfectly prepared. We finished with a raspberry cake and coffee for a leisurely, pleasant midday dining experience. We spent a couple of hours here and thoroughly enjoyed it. This happened to be our anniversary, and the food and experience was so good we decided not to even bother with an anniversary dinner. I'm glad we made the trip to Schonnemann's.

Rene's Favorite: Smoked halibut with a warm crème fraîche, crunchy cucumbers, herbs and radishes

On my third trip to Copenhagen (can I just move here?) I finally got my act together and decided to book a proper lunch at Schønnemann. Third time really is the charm! Walking down those four steps into the restaurant, you will be transported back in time. The brown paneling, slightly creaky wooden floors, weathered photos and the staff who seem to have worked here for years. When you read the menu, you'll find a staggering amount of smørrebrød. What is it exactly? it's an open faced sandwich usually topped with seafood, some herbs, seasoning and whatever is on hand. Except at this restaurant, everything on hand is very fresh. This is Danish tradition at it's finest, while the comparable Aaman's does a more rustic and modern interpretation. I love pickled herring and generally sour things, so we shared a Gin Marinated herring (Hendrick's!) and a spicy pickled herring. It's a generous cut and tickled my taste buds for what was to come next. My husband likes to copy what I order, so for our second plate, we both had the smoked halibut. He had his topped with a luxurious crab salad and it was so delicious! I did some research beforehand and knew that Noma chef, Rene Redzepi, comes here on a regular basis that they named a dish after him. Rene's Favorite didn't disappoint: smoked halibut topped with warm creme fraiche, crunchy cucumbers, herbs and chives. So fresh and light and even pairs well with my Carlsberg! ;-) If you're really going to indulge, you should order a * few * glasses of Aquavit. They have a crazy collection and I would've loved to try some, but we had a long day of sightseeing (i.e. bar hopping) ahead of us. If you only go to one traditional Danish spot, make it Schønnemann. Remember to make reservations for lunch since this place is wildly popular amongst tourists and locals alike. This restaurant has been open since 1877, so they must be doing something right.

Salmon, Pork Ribs, mushrooms, fried fish!

3 of us are very fortunate as we have no reservation but they accommodated us. The waitress, Janet, is super friendly. Food is great, service is even better! Leaving Copenhagen this evening and really enjoyed this last meal here! We took her recommendations and very happy with our food!

Excellent -- the best smørrebrød we had in Copenhagen. We got Simon's favorite (smoked salmon with creamed spinach and poached egg) and Rene's favorite (halibut with cucumber, chives, radishes, and creme fraiche). We loved both, but the salmon was the clear winner. Unfortunately, they didn't have their meatballs (frikadeller) when we came, which I really wanted to try, but those will have to wait until next time.

When asked about where I could get a good traditional Danish dinner in a restaurant no one could come up with a really good suggestion. In fact almost everyone was unilaterally unexcited about it. They say there were a handful of places that make it but they're pretty mediocre. It's said that no ones heart is really into it. No progressive chef wants to update it. It seems to be a dying tradition. In fact a survey was found that pizza was actually the most popular household meal for dinner. A few people said that the only way to get a good traditional dinner is to find a Danish grandmother. Well since I dont have a Danish grandmother and I didn't know anyone well enough to go to their house so I was out of luck. You know what the Dane's do love? Traditional Danish lunch. Smørrebrød maybe one of the most beloved foods in the country and Schønnemann's maybe the most beloved place for it in Copenhagen. Every single Dane I asked about Schønnemann lit up with a smile. You can talk all you want about the New Nordic Cuisine, Copenhagen as the new center of the progressive fine dining world, the worlds most influential food people in Rene Redzepi and Claus Meyer...whatever. The deepest love of Danish cuisine lives at this restaurant. Folks of all ages and levels of food love, from the most progressive fine dining down to the most casual diner... politicians, bus drivers. It didn't matter. They all sit side by side enjoying the various open faced sandwiches, salads, tartares, snaps and aquavit. We were given a long list of favorites from many staff members from all the restaurants we ate at. Lucky we got those because the choice of food is staggering. You could eat here pretty much every day for a month and not have the same thing. This also goes for the selection of aquavit and snaps. Our charming server gave us a few moments to decide what we wanted. We had presented him with a list of written suggestions we had received. He looked at over and nodded in approval. We got four different dishes and our server suggested a traditional beer that they have made for them, and a couple of snaps to go with our dishes. So we ended up with: -Fried filet of Plaice - mayonnaise, boiled Greenland shrimps, lemon -Spiced meat roll - on lard, raw onions, aspic, mustard a'part -Herring Tartar - rough cut sherry herring filets mixed with herbs, capers, onions, egg yolk -Simon's Favorite (SImon was in the house that day!) - smoked salmon, creamed spinach, poached egg on butter fried toast As predicted, everything was excellent. That many enthusiastic people couldn't have been wrong and Schønnemann definitely delivered. We had but the tip of the iceberg and we wanted to try more, but we had restrain ourselves for fear of not being able to eat later. Believe me it was hard. Not only that we could have just sat and drank all afternoon. The saying is "you need to drink enough snaps to allow the fish to swim in it". If you are a food lover and are in Copenhagen, Schønnemann is not to be missed. You best make reservations ahead of time though or you're not getting in. We witnessed three jackasses jump through the door demanding a seat. The server asked if they had reservations and they shook their heads. Asking if they could get a reservation soon, the server replied, "Maybe next Monday" Don't be pushy! This is one of the most democratic restaurants in all of the city and it's crowded for a reason. They do love Schønnemann THAT much here.

If you want to experience the best herring, salmon smørrebrød-- this is a must. Descend the famous 4 steps and be taken back in time and you'll feel part of the identity and have excellent food paired with fast service and a host of excellent servers who will happily recommend their top choices for you. Easily the best danish restaurant in my copenhagen visit!

The smørrebrød (open-faced sandwich) was in my Eat list when I visited Copenhagen and after some Googling, I stumbled upon Restaurant Schoennemann as the place to go for the best smørrebrød. So I called in a week in advance to make reservations. The restaurant itself has a cozy, old home ambiance but with fancy plates and silverware. I cannot attest to whether Schoennemann does offer the best smørrebrød, since this was my one and only smørrebrød experience. However, they do offer a wide selection so there should at least be one type that will suit each person in your party. We enjoyed the smørrebrøds we ordered, at least while they lasted. The portion is small (by North American standards at least). It is not enough to qualify for a meal. The prices are steep, considering the amount of food you get. Also, despite how good the smørrebrød may be, it is still just a sandwich. http://monkeyseemonkeyfeast.blogspot.ca/2012/08/restaurant-schoennemann.html

We made a reservation for lunch here while on our first visit to Copenhagen so we could experience authentic Danish cuisine. The restaurant is full of history and has lots of charm. The food was authentic and everyone found something they loved on the extensive menu filled with open-faced sandwiches of herring and more in inventive ways. The true winner was our friendly waitstaff who helped us decipher the menu, shared her food opinions and recommended our different flavor snaps to pair with our choices. Plan on spending a few hours for a meal here; it is an experience you don't rush through. Hygge!

This restaurant is on "Restaurant Row" in the Nyhavn area. This restaurant was a recommendation,…read moreand I would recommend it too. There were outside tables, but it was a bit chilly, so we opted for the nearly deserted inside restaurant. We had a table near the window, so it was a great view. The restaurant was nicely decorated and the service was very friendly. I ordered the gravlax open-faced sandwich, which is smoked salmon (very similar to lox) on an excellent sour dough bread. I opted to skip the mustard sauce, but the sandwich was perfect. My wife had the potato open-faced sandwich, which consisted of new potatoes, organic rye bread, lemon mayonnaise (romaleid), fried onions and pickled pearl onions. She really enjoyed it, along with her Spritz drink. Denmark seems to be one of those countries, where you cannot order tap water. Fair enough. However, our water consisted of an open carafe (which I'm sure was tap water), for which we were charged 50 Krona ($8). This seems high for tap water.

Staff had a "I don't wanna be here attitude"... we were definitely a bother. Went for the burger,…read morecouldn't add cheese, staffed stated food was not made there, so no modifications. Settled on fried fish and shrimp croquettes (ok). We knew it was a tourist trap, but we were looking for better service. Great location on a beautiful day, if not for the excitement of being in the city... the staff could have destroyed it. On vacation, looking to order a drink, I was advised they only had what was on the menu... mind you, as you look around, the establishment next door was rocking a full bar! In my opinion, pick a trap with friendly inviting and help staff... not unless you like it that way!
