Really an outstanding option anywhere but even more amazing in this restaurant desert that is Vitznau.
They have an indoor restaurant but no-one sits inside in the summer in Europe, especially since hardly any places have AC. The outdoor patio has two levels, one closer to the street and one above it. Both have fairly good covering with umbrellas. There is also an outdoor area attached to the patios which is covered and part of the building.
We started with an ice cold gazpacho, which I rarely order because I always find it less than satisfying. This one however really hit the mark. Ice cold with nice level of acidity, and crunchy bits of cucumber, onion and tomato it was garnished with five or six garlic croutons which added another layer of flavor and texture.
Next they brought out three or four slices of whole wheat bread with a tomato basil butter. It was perfectly balanced not overwhelming in any one flavor note. My choice was the veal strips with a mushroom cream sauce and a side dish of rosti potatoes. If you have never had these kinds of potatoes try them when you are at a Swiss or Austrian restaurant. They were amazing. Finally shredded potatoes are soaked in water to remove the starch, then they are dried well in a towel and then placed in a pan and dealt with butter. They are then cooked on each side with more butter until crispy and brown. The butter and potato flavor was exceptional in this version. The Ville strips were actually more like small little thin chunks which were a little dry but the flavor of the Sauce was very deep and rich. Would highly recommend this to anyone. My better half chose another schnitzel and it did not disappoint. They had a variety of stuffed versions which they call cordon blue and he chose the mozzarella with chorizo. My fear was that the chorizo flavor was going to overpower everything else but they had paper thin slices of a hard Spanish chorizo and it added flavor without overwhelming. Both dishes were served with a small cup of sautéed vegetables -zucchini, onions, peppers all nicely cooked again with copious amounts of butter, but it wasn't greasy it just tasted great.
Service was very good. Attentive without being overbearing and very informative when questions were asked about dishes. If you're looking for a good meal and are staying in this area, this is one of the best choices. read more
