Actually, I think the slightly cheesy décor sort of has it charms. They have a good selection of Portuguese wines, so start off with some vinho verde and sample an array of tasty starters. The cod fritters were some of the best I've had. Mains: meat for the carnivores and plenty of seafood dishes for the pescetarians. Vegetarians are S.O.L. Portuguese staple Bacalhau (salted cod fish) is well represented, but instead I went for a stew with monk fish and cockles. The grilled sword fish steak of my dinner date was definitely a treat. Earlier, we tried some of their specialties: the pork and Chanfana lamb stew. Both were good!. The lamb came in a reduce red wine sauce with black olives and potatoes and if I remember correctly, the pork was a crackling suckling pig with orange sauce that satisfied my every juicy pig fat needs. If you won't try dinner at Portugalia, at least just visit for the Molotov dessert! A massive airy whiteness that jiggles when they bring it to your table. At first sight, it looks quite intimidating, especially after having pigged out on mains before. But don't be fooled. When you dive into that fluffy egg white soufflé drizzled with the best caramel sauce ever!, the dreamy mountain of clouds will have jiggled it's way right into your tummy before you ever knew what hit you. The Portuguese azulejos in this small restaurant bring back fond memories of my visit to Portugal two years ago. I managed to get the last available indoor table for the evening. I suggest if you've read their menu (posted on the door) and they're open, ask to reserve a table for dinner. You'll have a hit-or-miss experience without a reservation. My mother and I ordered our Portuguese favorites from a jolly waiter who was happy we chose his restaurant for our first night in Amsterdam. Their pastelis de bacalhau were warm and crispy. They had a green pea stew with Portuguese sausage and a poached egg. Mom had a blackened sardine with red bell pepper slices. Great food, great memories. read more

We found this restaurant to cap a day of exploring Rotterdam (we were doing hub & spoke out of Amsterdam) with a hankering for more fish (Amsterdam's a great place for seafood indulgence). Having already had nibbles (herring and tacos at the giant food hall in Rotterdam) in the early afternoon. we just ordered a set of the sardines as an appetizer then two main plates, the cataplana de tamboril and the grelhado misto de peixe. After consulting the nice bartender/waitress, we settled on a half carafe of the house red. The food and drink arrived well-paced and cooked very well (temperature and seasoning). Various other diners flowed in; many appeared to be friendly with the staff, so repeat local custom... a good sign in my book. read more

We visited here while we were in Amsterdam and loved it! My family and I being Cape Verdean were excited to find cuisine similar to ours. The staff was pleasant and deserve a 5 just off of that. Our son was one and the waitress went as far as babysitting for us. read more

We were in the mood for Peri Peri chicken and saw it was on the menu at Restaurant Portugalia. We had a reservation and were seated immediately and given our drinks. There was only one woman working and she was hustling. She never seemed agitated or upset, but there's no way one person could manage the full restaurant. A guy came in for about five minutes to clear one table and take our order. He left, again, right away and she was back in her own. So the service was pretty slow - we were there 2.5 hours. Some customers were annoyed but you couldn't help but feel bad for the woman working. The food was good but we probably wouldn't go back, again, just due to the length of the meal - we are Americans - used to getting in, eating, and out. :) read more

My experience did not live up to others. On the current trip I was on, I had a great Portuguese meal so thought I'd see if this would match up. The service was painfully slow, I ordered a Vino verde which I love and was offered a wine that was not remotely like any Vinho Verde i had ever had. Two appetizers I ordered were not in stock. Food was very good, so hope the operation gets a bit better, as it could be a 5 with the cataplanai had. Worth a try, but be patient!! read more

Great dinner spot for those looking for something different...or even if you aren't looking for something different. We had the chorizo appetizer which is doused with brandy and ignited and cooked table side. For entrees, we had the Arroz Mariscos and the Cataplana with seafood. Both were delicious and perfectly hit the spot. After dinner, we had some liqueur and brandy. A great end to a great time. This is one of those restaurants that is hard to review because I neither loved it, or hated it. The food was decent, the service was ok, the price seems a bit high for what you got, so I had to go with what yelp calls each star ranking 4 is "Yay, i'm a fan" which I really couldn't say, but 3 is "A-OK" and that is exactly my take, it's not fantastic, it's not terrible, it's simply "A-OK" read more

Being Portuguese I don't usually go to Portuguese restaurants when abroad. However I was with a Dutch friend who really wanted to try it. We had melon, smoked ham and cheese for starter. Nice, but which the melon was a bit colder. Then had piglet and chanfana. The latter was a bit dry and the first was not as peppery as usual but still pretty good and the flavors I remember were there. read more

Had a couple days in Netherlands for work last week. Walking around and decided to give it a try. Nice little place, crowded, family run. Dined alone so it was weird for me but the servers were friendly guys. I just ordered three appetizers and enjoyed with nice bread and compound butter. This is a quaint family owned restaurant that is well suited for solo travelers as well as a groups of friends. I myself dined alone on a recent vacation and found the ambiance peaceful, the staff friendly, and most importantly the food delicious. I recommend checking it out sometime. read more
