If you're looking for Portuguese food in Amsterdam....Restaurant de Portugees is your place. Close to Nieuwmarkt off a canal ring by the red light district...this place holds a Portuguese charm. While all we ordered was the Caldo Verde soup with a dish of olives and a bowl of bread with a Super Bock....it was spot on! The Caldo Verde soup was exactly as if I were sitting in Lisbon. The kale was shredded perfectly mixed with bits of potato pieces topped with the smokiest piece of sausage to taste. YUM With soup this good....the rest of the menu has to be as good! Next visit....may come back.

I entered the dining room and saw ladies digging into some chicken legs so I told her I wanted the same. She said no it's a whole chicken so I said ok but thought she was misspoken. It was a whole chicken no doubt about it! Spicy with a taste I've never encountered before. A pepper used to make piri piri sauce. A lovely mix of seasonings and heat! I would eat there again! $14 euros. Other tables had mini grills with all kinds of meat on them. We went with the plates meals. Great pit stop along our way to walking the city of Amsterdam near Dam Center.

As a portuguese emigrant in the Netherlands I was extactic when I found this spot, and to be perfectly honest never had eaten portuguese food outside of Portugal, so I was a bit hesitant. But as soon I só codfish a Brás (bacalhau à Brás) on the menu I had to come in. I ended up paying arround 20 euro for the lunch menu, that had a soup (caldo verde, literally translates to green broth, and is usually made with potatoes, collard greens, olive oil and salt), then the main course the aforementioned bacalhau a Brás (made from shreds of salted cod, onions and thinly chopped fried potatoes in a bound of scrambled eggs). Both were very very good, but the soup takes the prize. And although nostalgia may be influencing this review, also... My years of portuguese food tell me that even back home this would be considered a pretty good restaurant!

We went here because it was just around the corner from where we had been drinking. We wanted food. And the Portuguese make great food. So this seemed like a no brainer. We ordered a pricey bottle of wine and a little later asked for some tap water. The waiter claimed they only had bottled water until he realised the restaurant was earning quite a bit from the wine we ordered. All of a sudden tap water was a possibility. I really cannot accept that restaurants claim that tap water is not available. I, personally, never order only tap water. Wine and beer are ordered freely. And if I feel thirsty, I should be able to drink the free water without additional charge. Further, the service was slow, and the food was nothing to write home about. If you're just around the corner from this place, go eat here. Otherwise, try somewhere else.

Nice place for some authentic Portuguese food. Great inside decors, the staffs are friendly and speak good English. They told me they have been in Amsterdam for 30 years. They have good set menu which you can get a soup and an entree and 1 dessert and coffee or tea for only 15-20 Euro. I really like their foods all fresh made to order. Therefore, it can means that it will take a little bit before the food can come to your table, but my wait wasn't that long. The only off side is that they sometime don't open for lunch, the staff said its depends if they are busy that day or not but they are surely open for dinner. I am sure I will go back again next time I am in Amsterdam and I will try their other stuff on the menu.

Had a wonderful dinner at De Portugees. Sat down at 5:30 to an empty house. By the time we finished (6:45) it was full. We had the Spare Ribs and Sea Bass. Both were excellent. I would recommend either.

They need to clean the hvac. But the food was average and wine was great. I would go back. Not the worst not the best.

"What dreams are made of"…read more.. Delightful little gem! Cute family run restaurant, conveniently located. And if you can look past the sea gulls, dinner here could be tons of enjoyable food! Actually, I think the slightly cheesy décor sort of has it charms. They have a good selection of Portuguese wines, so start off with some vinho verde and sample an array of tasty starters. The cod fritters were some of the best I've had. Mains: meat for the carnivores and plenty of seafood dishes for the pescetarians. Vegetarians are S.O.L. Portuguese staple Bacalhau (salted cod fish) is well represented, but instead I went for a stew with monk fish and cockles. The grilled sword fish steak of my dinner date was definitely a treat. Earlier, we tried some of their specialties: the pork and Chanfana lamb stew. Both were good!. The lamb came in a reduce red wine sauce with black olives and potatoes and if I remember correctly, the pork was a crackling suckling pig with orange sauce that satisfied my every juicy pig fat needs. If you won't try dinner at Portugalia, at least just visit for the Molotov dessert! A massive airy whiteness that jiggles when they bring it to your table. At first sight, it looks quite intimidating, especially after having pigged out on mains before. But don't be fooled. When you dive into that fluffy egg white soufflé drizzled with the best caramel sauce ever!, the dreamy mountain of clouds will have jiggled it's way right into your tummy before you ever knew what hit you. It's like eating air. Air that's makes your pants fit a little bit tighter...

The Portuguese azulejos in this small restaurant bring back fond memories of my visit to Portugal…read moretwo years ago. I managed to get the last available indoor table for the evening. I suggest if you've read their menu (posted on the door) and they're open, ask to reserve a table for dinner. You'll have a hit-or-miss experience without a reservation. My mother and I ordered our Portuguese favorites from a jolly waiter who was happy we chose his restaurant for our first night in Amsterdam. Their pastelis de bacalhau were warm and crispy. They had a green pea stew with Portuguese sausage and a poached egg. Mom had a blackened sardine with red bell pepper slices. Great food, great memories.
