A tram ride to the cusp of Germany's border (Weil Am Rhine) and a walk across the Rhine) from central Basel but well worth the effort to visit neighboring France. The €18 lunch special (entrèe/plat/dessert) is great deal and a respite for quality from the overpriced (and underwhelming) Basel restaurants . Both Michelin and Gault Millau were right about their mentions and recommendations for this place. read more

Really excellent French restaurant. Not so easy to find if you're not a local, but well worth the search. The food is fairly French traditional, but has touches of innovation, uses local (Alsatian) produce and as a result is very fresh and of high quality. Easily among the best French restaurants in the Basel Metropolitan area, it appears to be a fairly well kept secret; in our opinion unjustifiably so. We will visit again soon and enjoy their seasonal cooking. Be aware that the restaurant is not open for business over the weekend, perhaps one of the reasons for its relative unknown status. read more

Great restaurant in France thats only a 10 minute drive from Basel (mettz area). Far better value and quality than any place in Basel (aside from Piadina-bar margherita, though different). Have a 2 dishes + dessert for 50 euro thats a great deal. Had the Foie Gras, Char and Strawberry Cappuccino (some yogurty/fruity desert wth raspberry sorbet). Foie Gras was okay (though Im not big on it...was worth a shot while I was in France...) but Char and Strawberry Cappuccino were great! Highly recommend if you're in the Basel area! read more

History

Established in 1959.

En 1959 à Huningue, aux abords du Rhin, mes parents André et Elisabeth Schneider ont acheté l'Hôtel Restaurant Tivoli à la famille Spindler Ernest et Anna. Cet établissement déjà réputé à l'époque était à la mode dans la région. Avec l'arrivée de mes parents, Le Tivoli déjà renommé, fut devenu une référence en matière culinaire. Les gens se déplaçaient de loin pour venir déguster le Chateaubriand, les Hors d'Oeuvre riche, la friture de carpe. La cuisine était donc tout à fait au cœur de notre maison. Quant à l'Hôtel, il était familial, calme et convivial du fait, entre autre, que nous habitions au dernier étage. D'ailleurs, c'est au Tivoli même que je suis né. Dans les années 70, mes parents décidèrent d'étoffer l'Hôtel en construisant un nouveau batiment accolé à l'initial. Aujourd'hui, je mène mon Hôtel Tivoli - Restaurant Philippe Schneider dans la convivialité avec une équipe d'une dizaine de personnes, souriante et travailleuse.

Everything I needed for my first night in Europe to beat the jetlag. I ordered the octopus (in a can) with some bread as I had filled myself on snacks in the Air France lounge at CDG a few hours earlier and enjoyed a glass of Rose. The waitress was lovely and spoke English to help me along. I sat outside and watched the sunset. This is important to know: they take AMEX! Most places in Europe do not and I was so happy to have my corporate AMEX accepted. I highly recommend for a small bite after taking in the sight of Basel.

I always enjoy a glass of wine with a platter of cheese and Italian salumi. Recommended.read more
