Miso soup 5*****

The food is yummy and generous, service is good and the dining room is clean. I'd totally return for other dishes, I had the hamburger steak.

Every time I come to Hilo I always end up at this place. Great selection of Japanese, Korean and American food. It's open till 9pm most days.

Chicken Katsu

Osaka has been around for decades serving good home style Japanese/Korean food. Recently I noticed it's gotten a little pricey like most food places but they have hearty portions. Food is always consistently good, I usually get the chicken katsu and especially like the miso soup and tsukemono. It's a casual atmosphere and service is always fast, friendly and attentive. One of our regular places to go in Hilo.

My first dinner here in a few years, and although the portions are big the quality isn't quite the same. I had the combination with yakitori and tempura, and the shrimp was all batter and very tiny shrimp. The yakitori was overcooked and chewy, and my wife's butterfish was too salty. But they give plenty, so there's that.

Misoyaki fish

A well established Japanese/korean restaurant in a convenient location. Food here is consistently good and has good, friendly service. Today my wife had the misoyaki fish which she found soft and delicious, which I take her word for since I don't like misoyaki. I had the tempura and Teri beef combo. Tempura was crispy and light and the beef was tender and tasty without a thick gross sauce (the way it should be). Portion sizes are big. My knock is the prices. Wow! My plate was $32 and my wife's was $24. While the portion sizes were big, it still didn't equal out in my opinion. But hey, it's supporting a local business

Looking for a Japanese restaurant last night and we found one near our hotel . Restaurant Osaka on Yelp their review was about 4.5 stars So we decided to check this out . Got their around 6pm and there's was only 2 tables . Left around 7:00pm at there's was a line. I ordered chicken tofu and it was very hot and good tasting. It came with bean sprouts, mustard cabbage , fish cake , onions. Support local

Oxtail Soup

Our group decided to try this restaurant. YELP reviews seemed promising. Overall the group gave three stars to Osaka. As for myself Igive them two stars. I ordered the Oxtail Soup. At first I was hesitant because of the $30.00 price. Being on a different island I went for it. The taste of the broth was so so. There was three pieces of oxtail. Two small and one large piece of oxtail. On Oahu you get more oxtail and a better tasting broth for five dollars less. The service was friendly, but the food came out it spurts. Enjoy

I live on Oʻahu and am here with family for the Labor Day weekend. This was the perfect place for us to dine after a long day of errands. Each of us ordered a combo plate. Mine was Tonkatsu & Chicken Katsu. My other family members had Nitsuke & Beef Teriyaki and Tonkatsu & Yakitori. Our food was very generous and so delicious. Service was very fast and efficient. Great location and atmosphere. The next time I'm in Hilo we will definitely come by again. I love supporting our local businesses!

Shrimp and Vegetable Tempura with tsukemono cabbage slaw salad Mac salad and miso soup. Side order kimchee

I came here by chance because many other places were closed from 2-5. I was craving Japanese so I came! I was greeted and sat and given a menu. I was torn between tempura and tonkatsu. I chose tempura and wow was it healthy sized! I had taukemono cabbage slaw Mac salad miso soup and an assortment of tempura. I didn't know it was gonna be so big and thinking Japanese food was gonna be little so I ordered a side Kimchee. When all the food came out I knew I couldn't finish. I had amazing service and had conversation with my server. She said the restaurant is over 40urs old and current owners over 20 years. The food tasted great portions large and very welcoming atmosphere. I'll be back since I will be working in Hilo much more.

Service is friendly and relatively fast considering they have just a couple of kind ladies working there. Bingsu is amazing and rivals some of the bingsu we had in South Korea! We tried the strawberry bingsu which was loaded with sweet, jammy strawberries, colorful mochi pieces, condensed milk, vanilla ice cream, whipped cream, and a crunchy topping. One bingsu is enough for two people to share after a meal, though it's so yummy that you might be tempted to order two! We tried their spicy squid (not pictured) as well. So good with lots of squid in a delicious semi spicy sauce. Comes with rice and a few banchan. A little pricy to be honest at $20 for a small plate. The taste makes it worth the price though. Overall, Haneul Cafe is one of my top choices for Korean food in Hilo. The bingsu is the bomb! Looking forward to trying the other bingsu flavors like injeolmi, mango, and matcha. Will be a return customer for sure.

Our high school club chose to eat here to support a local business for our end-of-year celebration,…read morebut the experience was unfortunately very stressful for our students and staff. We spent two and a half months planning this event. My club treasurer and I confirmed the price on seven different occasions--five times over the phone and twice in person. Each time, we were quoted just over $600 with about a $110 in tips, which we paid in full two days before the party. However, the day before the event, we were told there was a miscalculation and we needed to pay another $400. Because our students had only fundraised the amount we were originally quoted, we had to remove two people from our party and downgrade our menu which did not include drinks anymore. We requested to bring our own drinks due to the last-minute budget change, but we were told we could "only bring alcohol and no outside sodas and juices." It was disappointing that this was the only accommodation offered to a group of high school students. During the party, we also encountered several cleanliness issues. We found hair in the food and cockroaches in the rice, as well as on the walls and near the buffet area. I am totally not joking about the food; I was shocked by what we saw. The servers were very polite and apologized when we let them know, but it was a major concern for us. I understand that accidents happen, but this was a very difficult situation for our club after so much careful planning. Personally, I will not be eating here again for a long time.

We showed up right when they opened at 5:30 p.m. without reservations on a Wednesday evening and was luckily able to get seated at the bar. Between the two of us, we ordered a bunch of items off the "small" section of the menu, including the smokey sashimi, sizzling tetsuyaki poke, smoked tonnato caesar, crispy rice, and their special of the day -- agedashi wontons. Of the items we ordered, the crispy rice and the agedashi wontons were my favorite items. The crispy rice is priced per piece, and you'll certainly want to order at least two per person, because one is simply not enough. The rice block is fried a beautiful golden brown -- similar to a hash brown. The crispy rice pairs perfectly with the ono mixture on top of it. With the agedashi wontons, I initially thought the filling was a bit under-seasoned at first, but when enjoyed with the broth, the wonton comes out tasting perfectly seasoned. The broth had so much umami to it and the wonton had the perfect crunch to it I always love a good Caesar salad and the one here is spectacular. With anchovy croutons, shaved cured egg yolk, and smoked ahi dressing, you're getting some creative, premium ingredients in this salad and everything works so well together. Even if you're not a salad person, I would definitely recommend giving this dish a try. On top of delicious food, the service at Moon & Turtle was spectacular. Food was promptly brought out after we placed our order, pacing didn't ever feel rushed, our water cups were never empty, and our server checked on us regularly to make sure we had everything we needed without being overbearing. I would definitely stop by Moon & Turtle again if I'm in Hilo.
