The Tatort-Essen Restaurant opened in March, is more than convincing but has no reviews yet? Very…read morestrange, but anyway, we came here for the first time and had lunch (it seems that dinner requires a reservation due to high demand from patrons) and we were enthusiastic.. By the way: Tatort means Crime Scene and Essen means either Meal or refers to the City of Essen. There is a TV-Show called Tatort and in the seventies it played also in Essen. The series still exists but has moved on to other cities for their crimes. So the name Tatort-Essen Restaurant is a bit ironic (not too much of course, in the end we are just Germans). Coming from Rüttenscheider Stern the restaurant lies a few meters before Möhrchens Eis. The Tatort furnishings are modern and straight but not cold. There are seats for around 30 to 40 people at 9 tables with wooden chairs. There is a small wooden bar in light colors where one can have drinks before or/and after the meal ;-) . It is also possible to have the order served here. Additionally there is a nice outdoor area in front of the Tatort offering seats for around 20 people. Small bay trees separate the seating area from the traffic. Looking at the menu it seems difficult to categorize the restaurant. Asian, French, tasty, diversity may be the right word. By the way, we learnt that there is no standard menu card, instead the different offers of the day are written on a board or given as a printed paper. On advice of the manager we ordered the Duck Teriyaki and the Ox Cheak and without hesitation I can say that we did not regret it. The duck was served on a bed of red cabbage and had a pleasant oriental taste. The ox cheek came with sweetheart cabbage and mashed potatoes. The meat was excellent and although sounding heavy and hearty the meal left a surprisingly light impression. For aperitif we were served a white Lillet and a smalll cold melon soup, the right choice for a hot summer day. Being absolutely satisfied we allowed ourselves some dessert: chocolate soufflé with mango sorbet combined with mixed fruits, a great ending. We had the coffee outside (I know, I know, smokers). It would not be fair to give credit to the chef alone and to forget the service: friendly, sincere, willing to help, quick, at the same time competent, simply extremely pleasant in a relaxed and casual atmosphere. We were pleasantly surprised by this Crime Scene. The whole meal was simply great. We'll come again.

The food and service were excellent. This is a place that locals eat at, so MAKE A RESERVATION…read more The menu is altered each day/week for local products, so can be quite eclectic. I had Spanish Octopus as a starter, and beef cheeks with a bourginone(sp?) sauce, and puree of pumpkin. My wife had Bruschetta with Mushrooms and truffles and a beef duo. The wines/champagne were great, and the staff spoke English and were polite and helpful. Expect 2 people to spend 150 euros for dinner, but this is just under a fine dining experience. They included palate cleansers, amouse bouche(sp?) and many other fantastic choices.

What is better than all you can eat Ribs? Maybe being review 69 here Giggidy. I know I am immature…read morebut if there are any Family Guy fans out there I know I made you chuckle a little. The Ribs are incredible! They literally fall off the bone. The first plate is a huge stack of ribs with good creamy Cole slaw and tasty potato wedges. The first plate is quite filling itself but when it's all you can eat, you need to unbutton your pants and let your belly fill up. The ribs bbq sauce isn't sweet but more on the savory side which I thought was tasty. If they had a variety of sauce that would be even better. As long as you keep asking they keep bringing them out. Sometimes you may have to wait a little for the ribs but that's only because they are busy. And after about 4 stacks of ribs there is no better way to wash it down than with some good quality German beer.

This is not the American Restaurant you are looking for! If you're a fan of readymade, frozen food,…read moreyou're in the right place. Not only are the starters, such as the onion rings, chicken nuggets and filled chillies pre made mass produce but they also all get tossed into the same deep frier causing the onion rings to taste like chicken, the fries/chips to taste like onion and the mozzarella sticks to taste like chicken. Even the nachos are your every day bagged produce, including the horrible pepper powder. Not even the simply made potato wedges are fresh! The burgers are a sad affair, again with cheap sauces from the supermarket, even the sear marks on the chicken breast burger are fake and the patties are so dry and tasteless you might as well start eating the table you're sitting at. And don't bother trying to tell the waiter how you'd like your steak. The chef only makes one version: extremely well done although the well done here is a bit of an oxymoron as he prepares the steak to the point that they're so dry you could sell them as leather and make a couch out of them. The salads are ok albeit expensive and yet again the dressings are off the shelf low end stuff. Sad! The American cole slaw is actually german mayonnaise extravaganza with some strips of coal, excuse me, cole. Now there are some positive things, the service is fast and friendly, the place is clean and the interior isn't too kitschy. The chairs and tables are comfortable and the benches in the back are great but that doesn't save the sadness emanating out of the kitchen onto your plate. Mind you, this restaurant's menu has nothing to do with the American kitchen. It's an amalgamation of average German fast food that's a bit Americanized by the Ketchup bottle on (most) tables. Virginia style? Nothing to be found here. Cheesecake Factory and Claim Jumpers would give this place a one punch knockout! So, if you're looking for American food, this is not the place to go, if you're looking for decent food, this is not the place to go, if you're looking for a quick bite and have no expectations of taste, you're in the right spot! And yes, there are an overwhelming number of good reviews of this place but I fear that has to be attributed to the fact that this is the only American restaurant (I seriously wonder if the chef has ever tasted any real American food) in a 10 mile radius.
