    Kolsch goodness.

What to do in Cologne during April-May when the weather is great...well enjoy the local Kolsch and seasonal white asparagus! Found this restaurant while perusing around the beautiful city of Cologne. It was about midday and seemed empty, but was offering up the rare seasonal white asparagus, so they had me hooked with that. The restaurant itself is quite deceiving, as it looks quite small from the outside, but insider boasts a large bar with two huge dining rooms, so I could only imagine how awesome this place must be during football matches. Due to it being mostly empty, we opted to sit inside as it was still a little chilly outside. No doubt that I had to order the local special Kolsch (Make that two!) and my guest ordered a raddler. Those Kolsch can be quite dangerous as they are small, but you can literally drain some in a single gulp (large gulp that is). I wanted to be coherent for the long day ahead so I only enjoyed two, but I could've spent hours draining that tasty beers! Onto the food though, the seasonal white asparagus is not cheap, mostly due to the fact that it is a PAIN in the butt to grow and harvest. Make a long story short about the vegetable, no sunlight (Must be covered or it burns and affects the flavor), and harvested at night. With that said, four large stalks and a side of potatoes ran us about 18 or 19 euro if I remember correctly. I could care less though as I have never seen the white breed before and was anxious to try it. No, it did not pack some ridiculous savory flavor, but it was a tad sweeter than the green partner most of us are used to eating. Spread some melted butter and herbs on top and it's a great snack to share honestly. I unfortunately cannot comment on the menu as I did not even ask to see one when we were seated, and everyone else was ordering the same dish as us. I am sure its good based on the reviews, but I leave that up to another guest/reviewer to decide.

Roast beef with potato dumplings, red cabbage and a sour gravy.

Very popular pub and restaurant right in the Heumarkt in Cologne. Don't be discouraged by the large crowd standing outside or in the front bar this doesn't indicate how full the restaurant is they just like hanging out there. The restaurant occupies a room to the left of the main bar and then the next floor up in a long thin spaces very common in the Aldstadt. The food here is extremely good and was mostly traditional. I had the the roast beef which was then fried and served with potato dumplings, red cabbage and a sour gravy with raisins. If you don't like the sauerkraut flavourings of salty and sour then this isn't one I'd suggest but I do and thoroughly enjoyed the mouth puckering goodness washed down with the kolsch. As with most bars in Cologne they only serve one beer on draught, and of course it is a kolsch, which is a very light pale with minimal fizziness, the best examples of this are served in gravity directly from the cask. I would recommend Keule as a good spot to esperience some traditional food for the region but if you are looking for a beer hall feel there are some better examples that I came across whilst in Cologne.

This had high ratings so obviously as the American savvy foodie, I took to yelp to get the key of the land. The best aspects of this bar is the decor, a lot of locals so you feel immersed in small town Germany culture. The local beer gaffel kolsch is pretty much the go to beer and is delightfully fresh light and the right amount of malt/hops ratio. This is a special brew local to cologne so try it out. Unfortunately I can't add stars because this place didn't produce the brew. So food.... I'm just going to say it is subpar to standard pub fare and would not come back unless I was a drunk mess.
