Stumbled on this place by accident, but I'm glad we stopped. The food was amazing. We wanted authentic German food and we got we wanted. We wife got the Smoked Salmon which was sliced thin along with the potato cake which was fantastic along with a side salad that had a great tasting vinaigrette dressing. I had the classic Sausage, S Kraut and creamy mashed potatoes. 5 Stars

I'm starting to think that these gasthause are in fact restaurants as opposed the pubs. The reason I suggest this is because the staff asked us three times if we wanted something to eat, however my brother really wasn't interested. Mind you, that was probably more me missing out than him namely because I probably should have grabbed something to eat and simply ignored his whimpering. Anyway, we ended up just having a drink, me one of the beers that they had on offer. The place itself is a little out of the way, and while it is located in the old town, it isn't in any of the really nice parts (such as the banks of the Rhine).

Welcome to the Weinhaus Brungs Im Herzen von Köln

In my opinion, the most authentic and best food you're going to find in Köln! Just a few blocks walking distance from the Dom, you'll find the Weinhaus Brungs tucked away behind barrels of flowers and pots of rosemary. A charming, old building with lots of history, we immediately knew we hit the jackpot. Downstairs has seating (as others mentioned) and is very dark and dungeon-like with sparkling lights. I much preferred the warmth of the ambiance in the main dining area. The bathrooms are located down the stairs though, so I at least had a peek. Yes, Köln loves its native Kölsch beer, but I was thrilled by the wine selection. Not knowing what in the world I was looking at - I was suggested a German red, which I had never heard of and frankly, still cannot pronounce. Just trust the server. The Rhine River, which runs through the city, is home to some of Europe's favorite wine regions. If it's still on the menu, DO NOT PASS UP the cabbage soup with fried bologna as an appetizer. It was the best thing I ate the entire time during my stay. And, must you only get ONE meal at Brungs, get the pork knuckles and sauerkraut served with mashed potatoes. The dish is authentic and absolutely glorious. Because it was soooo good and the service was excellent, we went there a second night. I went a bit more Deutschland traditional and ordered the sauerbraten. It was also good, but it was a bit intense for my American palate. I almost tried the stereotypical item than most Americans know to order - schnitzel - but why? And I cannot finish this review without mentioning the little "friend" I saw. Don't be startled if you see a tiny mouse scurrying across the floor when you're one of the last tables in the restaurant. I sat back, took a final sip of my wine, and smiled, remembering that Köln is one of the oldest cities in Germany and my experience was now complete.

This was a great little find in Cologne, not far out of the way. It was very authentic German food which was really delicious! We had the local beer, Kölsch which was very refreshing on a sunny 90 degree day of walking through the city. This is one of the few buildings not destroyed during the war and the cuteness level is off the charts. The owner was very proud to tell us that the downstairs area is more than 1800 years old. The place was full of only locals and I would definitely return.

Very friendly staff and great table service. The restaurant is in a very convenient location within walking distance of the cathedral. There are plenty of tables outside and the staff actively tends outside. The inside seems a bit crowded, but is still a breathtaking sight to see. Their food is wonderful! Such a wide variety of food to order from. Beautifully seasoned and great portion sizes. I will make sure to visit this restaurant every time I'm in the area.

We literally stumbled upon this place when we were wandering the streets of Cologne. What a happy happenstance! This was by far the best food we have had while in town for a convention. I had the fresh chanterelles with pork, another ordered the salmon with saffron honey, and the third ordered the beef medallions special. We also ordered the cheese sampler for dessert. We went with our waiter's recommendations on wine, and it was perfect. The waitstaff was very nice and we enjoyed visiting with them. They also recommended a quick tour of the inside, which was fascinating. We pretty much licked our plates clean and went away with big smiles on our faces.

Duck quarter with dumplings and leeks.

Nice atmosphere, decent food. A bit overpriced. This is NOT a beer garden. They have a large wine selection and just a couple beers. I had a duck quarter with some sort of dumplings and leeks. It was fine but not great. Service was attentive. For lunch it's overpriced. I'd say it's better suited for dinner when you're willing to pay a little more.

Great spot for a authentic German meal. Very old and well preserved interior. Had the fried cheese appetizer and the lamb shoulder for the main entree. Both were very excellent! I recommend trying and as a bonus it is away from the tourists. Took off one star for service took over 30 minutes after asking for check to pay.

Lunch menu (7.95€): soup & main dish
    Emily S.

My friend and I were recommended this place by our Airbnb host, a Cologne native. Very busy downstairs, festive on the garden side, quiet on ground floor. We took the lunch menu at 7.95€, which was light vegetable soup and linguine with salmon and dill. Both very good but unfortunately quite salty (however we generally find European dining to be too salty). Portions are very generous (copious amount of salmon!) and we could have shared one pasta, sorry to see all the food leftover (again, East Asian servings are smaller). There is a separate menu for Spargel (white asparagus) dishes, which were quite pricy for us students, but seemed excellent. After all Germany is the place for white asparagus! Would visit again when in town. Just a fun fact: seems to be very popular with Dutch tourists!

The staff was friendly and suggested trying a local coop artisan wine.

Gasthause Brungs offers German and Italian cuisine elevated to a level above a traditional gasthause. There is also an extensive wine list offering several local artisan wines that we found to be well constructed and surprisingly good. We sat outside in the lush patio as the evening was too warm to sit inside. The staff was warm and helpful with our limited German and guided us to select two delicious entrees and a marvelous local wine to accompany our meal.

Sauerbraten!!! Even the applesauce was amazing!

Traditional German specialties elevated to higher level. One sees and tastes the love and careful preparation. A great introduction to local food; friendly staff.

This had high ratings so obviously as the American savvy foodie, I took to yelp to get the key of the land. The best aspects of this bar is the decor, a lot of locals so you feel immersed in small town Germany culture. The local beer gaffel kolsch is pretty much the go to beer and is delightfully fresh light and the right amount of malt/hops ratio. This is a special brew local to cologne so try it out. Unfortunately I can't add stars because this place didn't produce the brew. So food.... I'm just going to say it is subpar to standard pub fare and would not come back unless I was a drunk mess.
