Schnitzel & fries with mushroom gravy

Delicious authentic German food off the square in Cologne, Germany. There with friends for the day and we all enjoyed our meal options. Nice location & ambiance as well. Would recommend to anyone living in the area or visiting.

Tasty, authentic German meal in Koln! The Pork knuckle is a must try while you're visiting at least once and the schnitzel was the crispiest I've had. The gravy had so much flavor and the Kolsch was fantastic. It's such a fun environment to hang out and enjoy drinks with friends and watch the game, or grab dinner. Our server was also very helpful and gave her recommendations. If we plan another trip, we will be back.

    Watch out Vorsict!!! Warning! Vorsict!

Warning! Vorsict! We had lunch here which is your standard German fare.I ordered the sausage with potatoes which was decent, potatoes were dry. There are so many restaurants on the square, I would definitely seek those out and avoid this restaurant. Service was ok. Beware of the older lady with the pony tail. I read a review and I didn't pay heed to his warning. She took my credit card and then asked me for a PIN number. I told her it was a credit card, she said it needed a pin. So I gave her another credit card same thing. Then we had to go inside with a debit card and pin. The whole thing seemed very sinister. Are they stealing pins? After I stopped at a shop and bought water with my card and no pin needed. In fact this is the first time in all my travels to Europe that I needed a pin for a credit card. Something crooked is happening here, Beware Vorsicht!! I went back to hotel and canceled all the cards I used here. I never write reviews and would usually not write a bad one but I felt my duty to warn people. Please let's this be a warning for future travelers, don't come here!!

This brewery has a more contemporary atmosphere than most found in Cologne . There are multiple levels,a beautiful bar in the basement and a terrace facing one of the main squares. We enjoyed our food with a few glasses of delicious Kolsch. The smoked pork chops were yummy and I could have easily shared my big plate. For dessert, the Apple Strudel served with vanilla sauce was delicious. Like in all the breweries we visited in Cologne, the beer comes in a small glass and they'll bring you more until you put your coaster on top of the glass to let them know you are done. They keep track of the number of drinks you've had with a mark on the coaster. Cool and efficient. Service was friendly and we had a very pleasant dinner!

Fantastic food, fantastic service and a warm comfortable place to eat. The pork knuckle was flat out amazing.

Local sausages with the most amazing potato salad ever.

A guy who looked like he loved to eat (like me) sat next to me on a bench in Cologne. In my best broken German, I struck up a conversation with this friendly local. I asked where I should eat and he told me to try this place. I am so glad I was brave enough to start talking because Gilden im Zims was authentic and yummy! We were seated on the bottom basement floor which had oodles of ambiance. In fact, it was so very quiet and secluded that we started to think that we were dumped in the "tourist annex." I'm happy this wasn't the case as the room began to fill up with boisterous locals as the night went on. The atmosphere is really cool, especially in the basement. Thick, rock-lined walls and dim lighting really sets the mood, while long tables (probably meant to be semi-communal) add to the open atmosphere. We were given small menus in German (thankfully I had my trusty Rick Steves translation dictionary handy) and I opted to order from the special winter seasonal menu. I went with the creamy cabbage and bacon soup and my hubby ordered some fried potato and egg dish. We shared some sausages with potato salad. That potato salad was amazing! Germans know how to properly cook potatoes in all of their forms. Yum Yum YUM! If you like beer, this is a great place to drink some tasty brews. The coolest part? You get a pencil so you MARK HOW MANY BEERS YOU CONSUME ON YOUR COASTER and at the end of the night, you simply hand the coaster to your waitress and she charges you for what you drank. Is that the coolest thing ever or what?

    A "pound" of brat!

I have been coming here every time I come to Cologne (which is once a month or once every other month)since my brother in law introduced me to this place a couple years ago. It is a massive old brauhaus with many floors and areas to drink and dine. It is a gorgeous place and definitely reminds you that the brauhaus was the center for social life. The beer here is also one of my favorite Kölsch brews. I try to mix it up every time I go and try different things on the menu. My favorite is the schweinshaxe (roasted ham hock) but last night I had the "one pound" bratwurst with home fries and a side salad. Do not get the one pound! It is enormous and just too much for one person. The home fries here are done with chives, onions, and speck (Germany bacon) - they are the best potatoes I've had in Germany. I asked for their dark brown gravy which goes perfectly with the home fries. Depending on when you go and how crowded it is, you will get a different experience. I suggest going for dinner and showing up hungry. Try everything in the appetizers menu and get a smaller portion of one the entrees.

My friend and I went on a quest to try as many of Köln's best beers at the best beer places. We ranked each Kölsch beer after it was all over. Our journey had some interesting paths but some great stories were created on our journey. This place was a little more new then some of the other brewery houses we went to and the service was a little slow but they were quite busy. Here they served Gilden Kölsch which was my least favorite.

Authentic German food. The food is in large portions. Nice beer. Nice waitress. She has come several times to check if everything is fine. And good location, not far from the Kölner Dom.

I went to this place after reading a lot of the reviews here and I definitely didn't regret it. The food was great, the place was clean and the wait staff were absolutely delightful. Patient, helpful and they even helped me with my somewhat broken German. Food quality is also good, which might explain why there are so many locals around, and they definitely keep an eye on your Kölsch levels, but they definitely don't force them on you. While I was here I tried the Sauerbraten and the pork knuckle, both of which I thought were fantastic. If you're ever in Köln (Cologne) looking for a place to eat, this wouldn't be a bad choice.

Just for their attitude alone this place gets a 5 stars from me! Great beer and perfect environment for the world cup games. Great time to be in town and perfect location. First we went inside and it felt dark so we went right back outside and we stayed for hours, beer after beer and some delicious pork knuckles! Our waiter had a great attitude and never let our glass be empty! If and when we come back we will absolutely stop by here again

This had high ratings so obviously as the American savvy foodie, I took to yelp to get the key of the land. The best aspects of this bar is the decor, a lot of locals so you feel immersed in small town Germany culture. The local beer gaffel kolsch is pretty much the go to beer and is delightfully fresh light and the right amount of malt/hops ratio. This is a special brew local to cologne so try it out. Unfortunately I can't add stars because this place didn't produce the brew. So food.... I'm just going to say it is subpar to standard pub fare and would not come back unless I was a drunk mess.
