Out a bit later for dinner than planned with the kids so a failure to book meant we were looking for availability and acceptability. On that measure El Trull at least matched what we were looking for. Located down a small passage, nicely decorated with some distinctive (home made?) art - around 40 covers and a decent turnover during our time there.
Very friendly service, but the three waiters on our busy felt one short of where they might need to be - but attitude, friendliness and responsiveness can't be faulted.
Menu probably best described as 'modern european' - a mix of ideas and cuisines (e.g. gazpacho, risotto, tempura) with some creative twists advertised on the menu (e.g. gazpacho comes with cucumber ice cream, mushroom risotto is black and with red fruit sauce).
Unfortunately the food didn't quite match the ambition. To start with the ingredients felt wrong for the location (salmon, tuna, sole, foie gras) and the quality of cooking not quite there (e.g. sole over cooked, risotto slightly tasteless with no sign of the mushrooms) and the creative twists peripheral (e.g. red fruit sauce with the risotto was three small blobs). On the plus side the four of us who had deserts loved them (I didn't try). Most successful dish we had was the salmon with black pasta and lime sauce - nicely cooked fillet (albeit of mediocre quality) with well cooked pasta and sharp sauce that went well with the rich fish.
So perfectly acceptable, I wouldn't rush back but if I had to eat there again I'd do so knowing I'd be well looked after. read more
