Large refrigerated cases faced the street with a variety of fresh fish, shellfish and premade seafood items. In the back the kitchen and food prep were visible and completed restaurant or to go orders were queued at its own counter (though staff would drop off at your table). Prices were quite reasonable comparing them to other restaurants in the more touristy streets. Also the cashier was very friendly with both locals and visitors. My favorite was the razor clams followed by the mussels and fish soup. Each was nicely seasoned and good size/ meaty for the shellfish. A separate bowl was also provided to hold all the empty shells. The WCs were located down a spiral staircase in the rear of the restaurant and was tiny. Overall a great start to my eating in Brussels.

Thank you, Mer du Nord for giving me one of my favorite meals during a recent European trip. I'm a…read moreherring lover and I got to try both pickled herring and Dutch-style cured herring (the kind that you see people dip in chopped onions and dangle by the tail and eat with their head tilted back.) I loved them both, but since I was not sure I would ever get to try the Dutch style in my life-time and despite it being a bucket list food, I was so enormously grateful. Even more grateful because it tasted amazing. I plowed through more than one I must admit. I might never get to try it again so I had to get more than one. Don't judge me. LOL. Anyway, the lady that helped me once I had one of the pickled and one of the cured ones was very patient and very kind. She seemed genuinely interested in what I thought and listened to me as I gushed like a fan boy over their products. I will never forget that and I was very appreciative. The place is pretty close to central, downtown Brussels and it was nice to just go to a table out in a courtyard and enjoy one of the favorite things I had on that trip. It was awesome.

wow, what is there to not like about this place…read more first, let me tell you their service is exceptional and very friendly to tourists which is hard to get sometimes in the area. we put our name down an hr before our requested time and they were very accommodating to save us the table. we originally came for the famous moules frites. found out it was all sold out for the night and we were very disappointed. we still decided to stay and try Georges4 due to the glowing reviews. thankfully, we were not let down twice! my bf and i ended up ordering just a bowl of fish soup and the waterzooi which is a specialty at Georges. i've had waterzooi previously in Boston and wouldn't say i was a fan.. but wow, Georges' waterzooi definitely changed my impression on the dish entirely! the bowl came with 3-4 types of fish fillet accompanied by other small sea critters like baby shrimps and musles. the dish delivered such a fragrant ocean breeze and the flavors were spot on! the fish were not overcooked and simply to perfection! the fish soup was very delicious too! a little pricey but really worth it to try! it will set your benchmark for fish soup very high for future bowls lol overall, i would recommend georges IV if you're in gent! the seafood is super fresh! tip for travelers: they offer free wifi!

A nice restaurant, conveniently located in the historic center…read more The price may be a touch high but I've found restaurant meals here to be expensive in general. The quality is rather good, though. We had a starter order of fried calamari. It was hot, tender, coated in crispy panko, and served with a sweet chili sauce that may have had a touch of curry. It was utterly delicious but the serving size was a bad joke. Four rings of calamari for 13€. I don't care how amazing it tasted. That price for that tiny a serving is unacceptable. The mains fared better. Contrary to some other comments, the server did not try to upsell us or get us to order more than we wanted. The mussels in garlic were drenched in a wonderful garlic bath and the serving was entirely reasonable for one person. Of course it comes with frites, which will be refilled by the server as often as requested. I don't care for mussels so I had some challenges with the menu. I settled on the shrimp croquettes with salad (and frites, cuz Belgium). Very well prepared and quite tasty, especially the salad dressing of all things, but the filling was much wetter than I prefer. Service was competent and professional, with the server even asking if we'd like the volume of the music turned down. Definitely worth it if you like mussels. Maybe not so much if mussels aren't your thing.

The sauce was like a pesto basil sauce, and the eel came with bone but was extremely soft and soaked in flavor. the green sauce was also perfect with the fries and complimentary bread. The bread was actually so soft and good that we asked for more! We also enjoyed the fish soup and the very fresh oysters!
