It was my second visit to Prague so I was taking my time to see more than the "must see things." As I said, I stumbled onto the restaurant because I was taking in the park where artists were painting, people were reading and I pulled out my phone to use the Merlin app to identify birds that were singing. It was totally picturesque. But I wasn't hungry. So I regretfully moved on without eating there. Imagine the elation a few days later when someone in our group booked a dinner reservation for us at the same place I was regretting having missed! With a group of a dozen of us, I think someone ordered everything on the menu. We were all thrilled. We had appetizers , cocktails and entrees -- everything we had was great! The restaurant is family-owned and we were treated to the son being a primary server for our group. Now and then dad was part of the picture too and we enjoyed the added dynamic. Pretty sure the son is on point for Americans as his English was on point. They were great hosts!

The sauce seemed to have been made from a can (1 star off) as the diced tomatoes tasted different than the whole tomatoes that were added to the dish later; the whole tomatoes tasted way better. My husband got the pinsa alla diavola, which was like a spicy pepperoni pizza. It was fine, but reminded me of a pizza at a kids' birthday party (1 star off), maybe only slightly better. I made a reservation a month in advance, but did not know I had to specifically request for tables outside on the river. When we arrived, only a few outdoor tables were taken, but was told the rest were reserved, so we were seated indoors instead. When we finished our dinner, the same few outdoor tables were occupied. I don't know why the restaurant couldn't just stagger the guests for the outdoor tables according to their reservation times.

To start I had the marinated salmon which was one of the best starters I have had. Complex flavours and textures are complimented by an appropriate chilli hit which brings the whole dish together perfectly. The coconut crumb was a touch of genius. Hubby had the fried peppers, they were 3 stuffed and fried peppers that he loved, I found the habanero too spicy for me. For mains I had the lamb, one of the best lamb dishes I have had. Perfectly cooked lamb, both sou vide and grilled. Accompaniments were delicious and the chilli hit of the perfect sauce made the dish sing. Hubby had the black pearl, love the theatre of it all...you sign a waiver and they present you with a tray of tissues, milk and vodka to ease the burn. The dish was beautifully presented. I managed 3 little tastes and my tummy burned for a long time after. Surprising, the flavors were excellent. Hubby ate most of it but he did suffer through it....definitely not for the faint hearted. I would be back often if I lived here! After dining at some of the worlds top rated restaurants...I can say that this is a true gem thay clearly has some mad genius at the helm, a person who understands delicate flavors and chilli and plates like a God. More people should know about this place!

My husband cannot handle spicy so I tried the habanero. I could only handle 2 bites before my mouth was on fire. For our entrees, my husband ate the chili con carne dish. Under the mashed potatoes there was some chocolate - interesting mix of flavors. I had the roast beef salad with papaya and honey mustard type dressing. We ended the meal with a chocolate tart. They provided pate and some bread "on the house" to start. I do not like pate so I didn't touch mine. The service was great overall. Great place if you want to try something other than goulash and the other Czech fare offered around town. Pro tip: they charge you for the bread basket if you eat a slice. It was like 10 crowns.

The wait staff speaks English and the menu is translated in English as well. My boyfriend and I had the warm octopus and "tiger prawn" appetizer to start. Portion wasn't quite enough to split generously between the two of us but it was enough for both of us to have a taste. The prawns weren't quite big enough to be called prawns - they were more like the size of medium shrimp, however they were quite juicy and not dry at all. The octopus was very tender and cooked just right. The vegetables were crisp, not soggy, and paired very well with the shrimp and the octopus when eaten all together. I had the flank steak for my entree. The chef cooked it medium rare just as I requested. However I think the slice of meat that I got was a bit on the tough side. Instead, I highly highly recommend the deer medallions that my boyfriend ordered. The deer was cooked perfectly rare and they were so tender - it had the same consistency as a filet mignon, and with none of the game-y taste that exotic meats can have. I finished dinner with their very last slice of raspberry cake. This, too, was fantastic. The tartness of the raspberries balanced well with the creaminess of the cake. The white chocolate drizzle gave it a slightly sweet note throughout without being overwhelming. Overall the dinner came out to 1778 CZK (about $87.87) before tip for one appetizer, two entrees, one desert, and one bottle of Czech Cabernet Sauvignon. Please note that the bill includes a cover/seating charge. Both my boyfriend and I left feeling very full. The restaurant does accept credit cards - I used my MasterCard (my Amex didn't work for some reason) and left my tip in cash.

We had a choice of a five-course tasting menu, a three-course menu, or ordering a la carte - we decided to order the three course menu with the chef's suggested wine pairing. The three course menu was tartares, steaks and desserts, and everything they put in front of us was delicious - three different tartares of salmon, veal and beef; three different steaks of US beef, Australian beef and venison; and a sort of a deconstructed Pavlova with strawberry meringues, a mascarpone filling, strawberry sorbet and lemon verbena leaves. It was a really incredible meal. The bread at the beginning of the meal was excellent, the wine pairings were unique choices that matched the meal beautifully, everything was amazing. Also the wait staff were friendly and kept the meal moving nicely. My husband and I would absolutely go here again, I hope we have the opportunity someday :)

Once the lights came on the bridge and the castle, the whole scene was stunning - definitely one of the best dinner views in Prague. Service was excellent, very attentive and welcoming. We had a set meal and also ordered scallop and shrimp à la carte. The foie gras was a highlight - rich and perfectly done. My main course was pike fish, which was tasty, and the mashed potatoes with sliced tomatoes had amazing flavor. Dessert was fun with dry ice for a nice presentation. The only downside - the ravioli was too salty for my taste. Presentation overall was impressive, though, and the rest of the dishes were flavorful and well-executed. To have fine dining with a romantic view of the Charles Bridge, Mlýnec is definitely worth checking out.

The waiter was incredibly kind by providing a me a table outside, and directing me inside to order. He recommended the breakfast Karlin, which I decided to opt for. Tasting the cold brew was quite the experience as well. Wonderful tasting coffee and the euphoric caffeine kick which accompanied it. At this time, I was also able to dig into some of their lemonade which was fermented. Tasting like a kombucha, it was delicious and settled my stomach incredibly. The Karlin breakfast came out soon after, about 10 minutes later. Sizable to say the least, it was two eggs on bread with their marinated trout. Eggs tasted wonderfully, fish tasted fresh, and smothered in the hollandaise created a delicious breakfast. Following that, I dug into the curd cheese with berries. So sweet and perfect in portion to end a meal, I savored every bite. A wonderful covered outdoor seating area, fresh local ingredients, and diverse dishes of every kind made for a great experience here. The kindness the staff showed, and calm atmosphere facilitates the perfect environment for the food to dance in.
