This restaurant is amazing! I definately recommend going when you are in Prague even if you aren't a vegan or vegetarian. I ordered the Kimchi to start, which exceeded my expectations. Very sour, a little spicey, great way to open the palate. Then I ordered a glass of their fresh juiced apple, carrot, ginger juice. Good, well balanced, refreshing, but not cold. About met my expectations, maybe fell a little short because not cold. Then I ordered the raw tacos. These were good but did not meet my expectations because they were not described on the menu. They tasted fine, nothing wrong with them. I had just expected something more like traditional tacos. What I received was a taco salad. So if thats what you want you will be pleased. For me, I was slightly disappointed simply because I had already had my mind set on traditional tacos. But they tasted fine. The taco shell was made out of spices rolled into a crepe thick shell. The innards were some sort of processed raw nut mixture or something. Tasted great. The salad also tasted great but the dill dressing was a little weak. I also ordered a side of guacomole which was extremely bland. Very disappointed in that. Its like they had not heard of using lime for either the taco salad or the guacomole...which is of course a staple in mexican cooking. And one of the reasons this didn't get an extra star. The restaurant also seemed to lack salt in all the dishes. A very important ingredient in cooking that brings out flavors that otherwise wouldn't appear, and brings others full circle into harmony with the rest of the dish. Another reason this didn't get an extra star. And the restaurant is not cheap compared to the rest of prague. And they do not accept cards but will not tell you that ahead of time or indicate it anywhere. If you do not have cash on you you may be a bit embarrassed and have to take a walk down the street to an ATM while leaving something with the restaurant. I've never had to do anything like this in my life with any restaurant I've gone to. I also ordered the raw chocolate cake for dessert, which greatly exceeded my expectations. Greatly. And anything that didn't meet my expectations did not fall below it by much, and was obviously made by the highest quality ingredients and an otherwise good recipe. And also the restaurant has an atmosphere that is just sublime. Its a really amazing place to dine in. They have put so much into the decor. So I highly recommend this place. I simply do not recommend getting the same entre I did if you are expecting traditional tacos. read more

We (my SO and I) went there because we looked for a vegetarien place to dine. Our expecations where high because of the feedback on yelp and tripad****r. We weren't disappointed. We got a table in the basement which is arranged just gorgeously. The service was great and the food was delicous. Even as a non-vegetarian I enjoyed the food a lot! The "chicken" quesadilla and the goat cheese where fantastic and their freshly made lemonades are better than any pop or soda you'll ever find! The mixed clientele makes the ambient even better! Ambience was incredible but it's difficult to enjoy with the intensely slow service. I MEAN TERRIBLY SLOW. Staff does not work smart, but it could also be said that they are understaffed. Otherwise, it was enjoyable - food was probably 7/10 for vegetarian. Food could be more complex in flavor, spices etc. Cuisine was also relatively heavy on meat substitutes, which is good/bad depending on your preferences. I really LOVED Maitrea. I was so surprised that there was a vegetarian/vegan restaurant in the Czech Republic, as in the United States, we don't really even have many choices for vegans. After arriving, I could clearly identify the asian style theme of the entire restaurant's decor. We went downstairs, but after finding out that it was full (we were there for a late lunch- 3 PM), we ate upstairs. They initially told us that it would take a while for our food to arrive, so we ordered appetizers. DO NOT let this lead you to leave! They had all 5 of our meals out pretty quickly and I'm so glad that we stayed. I ordered the kung pao "chicken" in vegan style which was delicious! I highly recommend this restaurant. I really got a trendy vibe from this place, which one is rare to find when traveling. Overall, really good place, lovely atmosphere, and I want to return as soon as possible! P.S.: They also have a sister restaurant called Lehka Hlava, or Clear Head (I think :/) that has a lot of the same things, yet still is different. If you loved Maitrea or couldn't get in, this sister restaurant is lovely as well! read more

I really appreciate what Maitrea is trying to do (there aren't that many vegetarian restaurants in Prague), but to be honest, the food just isn't that great. I felt like many of their dishes relied too heavily on cheese/sour cream instead of focusing on enhancing the flavor of the vegetables. My friend had the Kung pao chicken. It was just ok. Service was also just ok (definitely understaffed). People at other tables were raving, but I wasn't impressed compared to top vegetarian restaurants I've been to. This place has such a good online reputation, I was expecting probably too much from it. The design is peaceful and modern yet really misses light. Service is above Czech average, casual and friendly. The choice of food is really large and you will definitively find something to your liking, even if you are not vegetarian. When it comes down to taste, we left with a mixed feeling that some dishes are AAA but other fail to deliver. It is probably the consequence of having that many on the menu. The most disturbing part is the feeling you get supermarket-grade products with industrial premix spices. Not what I expect from one of the top vegetarian restaurant in Prague at 200 czk per dish... To rate this place is a difficult choice as the best deserve 5 stars and the weakest way less. At the end of the day, I wont return and much rather choose a good asian eatery which offers fresher, tastier and more consistent vegetarian experience. Hence the average rating. read more

One tiny piece of information on Yelp about Maitrea that is incorrect--they do NOT accept credit cards. We sat down and because most of the restaurants in Prague do not, I asked (just to confirm)--good thing. We found ourselves quickly running to the ATM to pay for dinner. The service was okay, seemed a little disorganized. The website says that you cannot make a reservation for under four patrons. We may have missed the fine print, but that is only during lunch. We got there and they do not like "a wait." If there is no table for you, they really just want to shoo you away. We asked to wait, and it seemed to stress the waitress out. Luckily a table opened up quickly on the lower level. The ambiance is relaxing. The menu is very easy to read and you can fit your meal to your diet easily. Our meals were full of ingredients, but lacked flavor. Overall, our experience was okay. read more

Like its sister location Lehka Hlava, the kitchen here closes early, so even though we arrived an hour before closing, the kitchen was already closed for the night. i was so disappointed, as it was our last night in town and i'd been looking forward to eating here. the waitress was so sweet, though, and sat us anyway and told us we could get cold appetizers and desserts. The ambiance is warm and open. there is soft lighting coming from really interesting paper lantern type fixtures that sort of look like artistic interpretations of mushrooms or something. we got the veg sausage and the sampler. the sausage was surprisingly good, if unusual. the sampler was good, though i don't think tofu tartare really translates well. maybe it's a texture thing. that really would have been enough food for us, but i wanted to try a dessert. The chocolate orange cheesecake did not disappoint. I don't remember the name of what I had to drink, but it was basically like a red sangria - red wine and juice with orange slices. i felt terrible that we showed up so late, and i think that we were the last patrons to leave, but the staff didn't make us feel rushed at all and in fact insisted "please don't feel like you have to hurry; enjoy your meal". Be aware that this location has religious materials on the tables, if that sort of thing makes you uncomfortable. read more

The goulash was that excellent combination of quick and delicious (and vegetarian): highly recommended. However, when I paid, my card was charged in USD rather than CZK (dynamic currency conversion) without my consent. When I pointed this out, the server apologized, said she didn't know how it happened, and offered me a coffee as compensation. She said that the staff had been told that very morning to always charge in CZK, partly since the extra money went straight to the payment processor and didn't benefit them at all. I was skeptical, of course, but I didn't pursue the issue because it only cost me CZK 10 ($0.45). Still, check your receipts! read more

Came here for my first night in Prague and was so happily welcomed! The interior of the restaurant is very comfortable with a slight Asian flair. We sat in the downstairs which was cozy and huge. We started with the appetizer plate that gave us samples of a few things on the menu. We had vegan pate, hummus, grated beet salad, a yummy chive sauce, soft green crepes, a roasted red pepper sauce and delicious bread. Everything was so yummy and it was a perfect amount to share between two people. For dinner, I got the eggplant curry with rice which was very yummy. The texture of the eggplant was a little interesting, but the flavor was good and it was just the right portion with the rice. We didn't try them, but they also had vegan variations of various classic Prague foods, such as goulash, which I'm sure are very good! Definitely recommend this to anyone, even non-vegans, who are in search of a good, healthy meal in Prague! read more

I've lived in Prague for a few years and I'm used to the more relaxed pace of Czech service. The amazing sister of legendary Lehká Hlava (Clear Head). Maitrea is larger so there is a bigger chance you will get a free table, if Lehká Hlava is full. Eventhough the staff is amazing over here and the menu is very similar to Lehká Hlava, I personally prefer to go to Lehká Hlava because of the cozy atmosphere there. Although the ground level appears small when peering in from the street, the bottom level is a large room with a lovely calming ambiance about it. The menu is extensive. Besides Lehka hlava definitely one of the best vegetarian restaurants in Prague! Had the vegetarian goulash with dumplings (the peppers on top were a bit spicy, but ok for me) which was a welcome alternative to the traditional "meaty" czech cuisine. My girlfriend ate the Quesadillas and was so astonished that she made the same meal right after we came home by herself. The atmosphere is also very nice and the service perfect. On weekends it's better to have a reservation, which can be made on their website. If you go there, try the raw cheesecake.. its delicious. read more

Great Veggie restaurant in the city centre of Prague, but thanks to its location in side street behind a cathedral and underground floor it feels very calm and quiete. AWFUL SERVICE RUINED OUR NIGHT. Went the night before Valentine's with my fiancé but the service ruined our evening. From the moment we walked in we knew that the staff couldn't care less if we had a nice evening. Not even acknowledged when we walked through the door. Service with a frown comes to mind. We were sat beside the noisy open kitchen (chefs laughing and acting like idiots) and when they finally agreed to let us move to another table they began to play this really weird depressing techno music, which totally jarred with the Zen design of the place. Our friends have had similar bad experiences of rude staff here and at Clear Head and now I know why. Had it out with the staff and the manager.
