Everyday we had freshly baked treats that tasted amazing. The room was clean and and safe for our four year-old to play with his trains. It was conveniently located by a small park to swim and a winery. Very scenic, the water that surrounded the lodge was beautiful. We even made a book about our trip. Thank you for hosting us. Would definitely come back!

It's also located in a scenic spot -- beautiful Omena Bay is right down the hill. The lodge itself is comprised of several historic buildings. When we stay here we prefer a room in the Wheeler House, the main house that's also the inkeepers' residence; the second floor is home to four very nicely appointed guest rooms, each with a private bath. The dining room and sitting rooms are on the first floor; guests can enjoy a crackling wood fire in the fireplace, play the piano or just sit and read in the front rooms. Another house on property also has guest rooms, we believe, while a third house is divided into suites. There's also a game/activity building with its own fireplace and kitchenette. The hosts are friendly and helpful, and are excellent cooks -- we love the breakfasts! They're also very knowledgeable about the area, and about the history of their establishment. We really enjoy them. Omena, between Suttons Bay and Northport, is in the northern section of the Leelanau Peninsula but still makes a good, convenient base camp for exploring the rest of the area. We would definitely recommend Sunset Lodge for couples as well as for groups. After driving down "motel row" in nearby Traverse City, we were even more convinced that mom-and-pop lodging is the way to go up here, and that we have found a real travelers' gem in Sunset Lodge.

Where do I even begin? My wife and in-laws stayed in the lakefront facing building for a few nights this summer (my first trip to Mackinaw and this part of Michigan), and everything about the building is a disaster. The exterior of the building is caked in mold. The exterior stairs to get to the 2nd floor room we stayed in covered in the oldest, dirtiest, dumpiest rug I have EVER seen. It must never have been changed. It's SO moldy and slippery that our entire party almost slipped while walking up those stairs. Our room wasn't much of a different story. The room and bathroom were in terrible shape. Dirty, moldy, and un-kept. It looked as if it hadn't had a thorough cleaning in.. well, ever. The exterior balcony had the same carpeting as the stairs with the same issues - dirty, moldy, damp, and slippery. The room was also damp and humid. We all felt like we had to walk everywhere in the room/bathroom with our shoes on because it felt so disgusting. The balcony was screened in, and parts of the screen were taped where there were large holes. Same for the sliding screen door - holes were taped where there were huge holes. This place needs to shut down for a month and hire a crew to come in and do a complete gut cleaning job - from the inside out, and all around. You can see the potential of a place like this, in a location like this, but management/ownership has to put in the work to keep it up. And these folks don't. I'd be embarrassed to sell this as a hospitality experience in Mackinaw City.

If I could give this place zero stars, I would. We booked the Quality Inn in Mackinaw City directly…read morethrough Choice, thinking we were getting a decent stay with breakfast and a pool. Instead, we got one of the most disappointing hotel experiences I've had. At check-in, the manager casually told me breakfast was just "grab and go" no hot food, nothing like the continental breakfast I was promised. Our room was shockingly small, with a bed that felt like a cardboard box. The carpet was stained, and there were electrical cords running across the floor to reach other outlets, which felt like a safety hazard. The pool was the final straw. It was green, clearly not maintained, and filled with spiderwebs and actual spiders inside the pool house. When I brought this up, the manager flat out refused a refund and kept insisting the pool was fine. He only offered to move us to a lakeside view, which did nothing to address the actual issues. We even used a blacklight in the bathroom, and what lit up told me everything I needed to know about how "clean" the place really was. We ended up sleeping on top of the bed with our own sheets and pillows because it felt so dirty. Do yourself a favor and avoid this hotel!! Choice should reconsider having their name attached to it.

I gave this hotel a 2 star instead of a 1 star because of two reasons. First the staff at the front…read moredesk and the cleaning personnel were very nice (not the manager, who was extremely rude). Second it's right on the beach and located in a very convenient spot. A group of 12 of us (separate rooms) stayed for two weeks on government business (orders). 2 colleagues had to leave halfway through the stay because their orders changed. They went to check out and the staff at the front desk told them they could leave but would still be charged for the entire two weeks. The reason was because we signed and acknowledged that we could not cancel any part of the stay. We asked to talk to the manager and when we brought up the situation she was very rude about the entire thing. Continued to repeat that we had signed a contract and they wouldn't budge. I asked to talk to her supervisor but she said her supervisor was the owner and that she was the liaison between the owner and guests. She also informed me that the owner would not say anything different because it was his rule and he wouldn't budge. Needless to say, we will not be staying at this hotel and we will work on getting them taken off the government list of approved hotels. The room is very outdated, looks like something from the 70's. Has not been updated in a very long time. The outlets in the room are all in a very inconvenient place, and the WiFi is terrible (bare minimum WiFi). The door didn't want to close and I had to redo my key 3 separate times. A colleague changed his key more and they finally had to come and change the entire lock out. They advertise breakfast but it was a joke. All they had was ham in water (taste was terrible), rubbery pre-made pancakes, hard boiled eggs. The Coffee was good, but breakfast was only from 7-9 which was very inconvenient such a short amount of time. The pool and hot tub not very clean but at least they were open. Gym was small but ok. Their washer/dryer's (laundry room) was out of service so we had to walk down to the Hamilton hotel and do laundry. Then when we finally checked out, the hotel charged us tax even though it was supposed to be tax exempt. And my choice reward number had been removed so I wasn't getting credit for the stay. I had to call and get it added back again. The tax issue is on going, I had to send an email to get it removed. All in all I would not ever recommend staying at this hotel. When the owner has no concern for the customers/guests and really only cares about how much money he makes. The same family owns all of the hotels and most of the Restaurants in Mackinaw City so they don't care about their customers or the military. I recommend stay at Holiday Inn, Lighthouse View Motel, or Rainbow Motel.
