Stumbled into Repeal for after dinner drinks last weekend. I haven't been here since this space was occupied by Bourbon House, and learned it opened fairly recently. The aesthetic is great and they've really made good use of the space. The biggest disappointment was seeing things so quiet. I know Bourbon House could be easy to miss, but was always densely packed. Despite the prominent neon sign outside, the room remained surprisingly quiet throughout our visit. Our little party of 4 enjoyed ourselves, but the buzz we craved just wasn't there. Drinks were good and the bartenders did a great job conjuring up the spirits. Bee's Knees, Corpse Reviver No 2, and Amaretto Sour were all made very well and hit the spot. Service was prompt and polite. We got seated after a short wait, and the team was attentive and friendly throughout. We were not kept thirsty! The live music was great and helped lift the otherwise subdued atmosphere. I'd love to see how the vibes are when the crowd is more filled out. I only found out about the relationship with Prohibition in Murray after the fact, but several members of our party called out the similarities in theme and vibe during our visit. Overall, this was a nice experience. I'd love to be back when things are a bit more lively. For me, drinks are better enjoyed in a crowd. read more

Front desk man was extremely rude. First, he told us we'd have to wait an hour -- but when we checked our online reservation, it clearly showed we were booked in just 15 minutes. That was the first red flag. When we first walked in, he greeted us with a smile -- but the moment he heard our accent, his expression completely changed. The smile disappeared instantly, and he became cold and condescending. It felt like he had a problem with us from that second. We came back after 15 minutes as planned. I didn't have my physical ID on me, but I had a clear photo of it on my phone, and I visibly look over 30. I understand the rules -- but even if you have to refuse service, you can do it with basic respect and manners. Instead, he treated us like we were nothing. Great location and ambiance, the food tasted really good but the portions are very small for the price. I was hungry when I got there, and I left just as hungry. But if you're in the mood to just grab a snack and are willing to spend a bit more money, go for it. However, the service is what was really disappointing. The bartenders are basically order takers, they don't care to acknowledge you or even find a way to connect with you as a guest. So far, Hospitality in SLC has not been it. read more

I try to visit Prohibition every time I go to SLC. When I heard they had opened a location downtown, I knew I had to try Repeal. It did not disappoint. The atmosphere was very cool. They had a Jazz pianist the night I went. I ordered the Bison Ribeye and the Frozen Fig Soufflé for dessert. Both were amazing! It may have been the best steak I've ever had. My waiter was very knowledgeable of the menu and had some great recommendations. It's a bit pricy, but you get what you pay for. I will be back, and I suggest you give it a try sometime. read more

Loved the ambience of this place. You walk down a staircase and it opens into a speak-easy type setting with low lights and tables in quaint areas. The bar is wonderful with the lights and choices in front of you. The menu is an old newspaper which just adds the best touch! The bartenders are wonderful and open to helping which is very nice. I was able to try the Iron Work drink as well as the handmade Tahitian vanilla ice cream and the chocolate tartlet! The tartlet was interesting. Ever since my son started really getting into Jazz music, I've been eagerly awaiting his 21st birthday so he could go to a real live jazz club with me. Well, the day finally came and we booked a table at Repeal, anticipating a cool jazzy experience. We were not let down! I'm so excited that downtown Salt Lake City has such a great place to sip on a Martini while listening to live music. It's spendy, no doubt. But you're not attending a low-level bar. We were initially seated at a high top that wasn't intimate, for a date night. The server gladly moved us. She was very knowledgeable about the menu and generally just fun and pleasant. She was exceptional at her job. The bartender didn't have a local rye whiskey. No problem. He came over to explain and make a recommendation. The Black Manhattan was awesome. For my next drink I asked him to be creative. The drink was fabulous. The bartender was world-class. The food was good. Portions are small but that is totally acceptable for this level of dining. Pricing is acceptable for the quality. If you are looking for budget dining, that's ok.... you should just look elsewhere. They are no trying to operate in that space and are clear and upfront about that. The bar tender and server were open minded and accommodating. What I can't figure out is the "chef". We ordered vegetarian and pescatarian food. When we wanted to order the noodles (plain) without meat, we were told that the chef doesn't allow substitutions. How hard is it to plate fresh pasta noodles without meat? The server and bartender more than made up for the "chef" and so 5 stars it is! read more

Seek this out. The cocktails are top shelf in every way: creative, compelling, crushable. Live jazz plays behind the golden age ambience - the vibe cradles you in glamour. And the quality meets the moment. The small plates are indeed small, but they're refined rather than lacking. The octopus in particular is next level. Like escargot from a parallel universe. Entrees are more normal sized and equally well prepared. Huge shout out to the bartenders! We felt welcomed, valued, and almost immediately part of the Repeal family. Wow!! What a total makeover and totally moody vibes! Since it took over the old Bourbon House my expectations were pretty low however I was blown away from the total makeover and vibes that this place has created. The reason for not giving it 5 stars was, 1 no prices on anything and if there were the printing was cut off so if you had a budget to stay in this wasn't the spot. The staff wasn't unpleasant but they def didn't make it a memorable experience and when we went for a bday nothing was expressed wishing a happy birthday and when asked at the end of the meal to take a picture of the group I was met with a little bit of an attitude of they were above doing this for us. I would have been a little more ok if it had been busy, which I wouldn't have asked but it was completely empty in the front and the host was just on their phone. Repeal is a whole vibe. We scored a booth in the back with a piano view, and it was the ideal setup. The musicians are wildly talented. That piano player. Credit where it's due: the chef showed up. They have bites and drinks, and we went on a Thursday night and there was live jazz music. This restaurant has a cool ambience and we went for the live jazz music! The music was great however they charge a $25 cover fee... at a restaurant I thought was bizarre. Anyways, the food is pretty expensive as well though we knew that going in. The menu only has 5 entrees and one of them was sold out that night so 4. I got the chicken which was very delicious and a side salad. I could tell their food was well made though I wish there was more options. We also had a reservation for a table although it was in the corner where you can not see the band so we switched to sit at the bar, kind of disappointing. We asked for a table for four since our group planned to enjoy cocktails and appetizers. We were initially seated at a table that only accommodated three people. When we pointed out that we needed seating for a fourth person, we were told we would have to move. The staff then relocated us to a couch area. When we asked for an actual table, we were told there were none available, despite the fact that the entire venue was empty. At that point, I explained that we would need to go elsewhere, and the response was simply, "That's fine." I've never experienced such a lack of hospitality in an empty restaurant. With no customers in the building, accommodating four guests at a table should not have been difficult. Based on this experience, I can understand why the place was empty. This wannabe speakeasy is overhyped & overpriced. Make sure you don't arrive early for your reservation, because regardless of how many tables are available, they'll make you wait just out of spite. If you're looking for a quiet after show place to grab a drink, look elsewhere. It seemed as though the musicians in the bar had been given instructions to play as loud as possible to ensure that people at street level could hear them. The space had so much potential to be great however, a jazz club/lounge has an energy, an ambience and it was missing this on every level. The lighting was too bright, the jazz players were placed near an exit door and the kitchen door so anytime the waiters (which is often) went to the kitchen an even brighter light appeared, distracting from the players. I didn't stay long enough to order a drink or food, the atmosphere didn't warrant a $18-$27 cocktail. The Jazz players were great, I have no doubt they book talented musicians however for anyone who's looking to get more of a Jazz club/lounge experience you will disappointed this might just be a better spot for dinner with music in the background. read more

Repeal is in the old Bourbon House location. We are impressed by the makeover which made the entire space more comfortable and charming. The service was very, very good in spite it was a Saturday night during holiday season right after opening. Brock was our main attendant and he answered our questions and inquired if we had a hard stop, which we did and he had us out the door with one minute to spare. Timing of the courses were well planned. Hannah (a manager) stopped to check on us a couple of times and is very engaging. Generally I was very impressed with the attitude, friendliness and hustle everybody on the staff. Only one thing I felt was curious was that when the server placed the plates, he announced the dish including the side. This is different than what I was taught. I expect only the ingredients to be explained if there is a deviation from the menu only. It was starting to get a little noisy so there was confusion on our part as to what we got. Not a big deal. Generally the noise level was low to medium and the live music was pleasant. We are so tired of sitting down to a nice meal and have to yell our conversations. THANKS REPEAL! We had the Subsoil Chardonnay by the glass which was good. I had the Gorgonzola Thyme martini which was good for an experiment but having so many flavors nothing stood out as a great taste except the fig and blue cheese on the swizzle. Ordered two appetizers, one being a salad with roasted hazelnuts, berries and blood orange slices which was tasty. The other was the warmed hummus with caviar. This was such a delicious surprise since I have never had warm hummus before. The taste is earthy and rich. The added liquid seasonings with the caviar made it stand out, making it the dish of the night. Main courses were the chicken leg and shrimp on fettuccine. The fettuccine was well prepared a'dente, shrimp was perfectly cooked so it was like biting into a cloud. The seasoning was not a puréed affair but rather mixed in so every bite had a slightly different flavor, the suspense of every forkful was delightful. The chicken was a mixed bag however. The bird itself was well cooked and extremely flavorful. It was served on puréed chili beans with a hot sauce border. It was cold, which might have been the intention but was not very appetizing to us. My guest had never had dandelions before, the bitterness was a hard stop. There was a polenta cake with a fennel cheese butter which also wasn't finished. I tried everything on the plate and with exception of the chicken, the flavors did not play very well together. Dandelions are the last on my list for edible greens btw. We split the chocolate torte for dessert. Generally good but the whipped basil cream was scraped off. We both love basil but not on rich chocolate. The bill was a little more than we generally pay (martini $19) $168 w/o tip but overall we are glad we came and we will return as we keep trying new items that we can call our favorites in such a warm endearing environment. read more

We found this wonderful restaurant on a Google search. Great hideaway restaurant downtown Salt Lake City. It's a little hard to find. Modeled after a probation speakeasy. Three-piece jazz, entertainment. Beautiful bar, nice decor. The food was excellent. For entrées three of us had the bison and the garlic shrimp with pasta. Several appetizers, including the octopus, lamb chops and venison carpaccio, all delicious. Great specialty drinks and a nice bottle of Spanish wine. Very friendly service with Miriam as the hostess and our server was Kiwi Kurt. They kept our water glasses full, and our drinks and food coming. Highly recommend recommended. We waited over an hour and a half for our food, while other guests who arrived 30 minutes after us were already finishing their meals before ours even came out. The ambiance and music were amazing, but the service was far from it. We barely got waited on, and our drinks didn't arrive until much later. When the food finally came, it was bland, under-seasoned, and definitely overpriced. The appetizers were not only overpriced but arrived cold. If you're vegetarian or vegan like my girlfriend, this place will likely disappoint you as there are very limited and unappealing options. Service is classy, music is SUPERB (many of my colleagues from the U jazz band often play nights here, so I can confirm they are the REAL DEAL, especially pianist Dereck Coombs), and the food is, yes, PRICEY, but doesn't impede on superb taste and presentation.
