It pains me to not give this restaurant a 5 star review because the concept is incredible and I was so excited to try it. Unfortunately, the meal wasn't amazing but did have a few hits THE GOOD - Great service. The dishes and specials were described well for us. Our waiter was very attentive to our needs (napkins and water refills) - The mussels appetizer (a special?) was incredible. Great umami flavor and a delicious, rich sauce that was perfect to dip bread into - zucchini blossom special was great. They were perfectly fried and had delicious sauces accompanying the dish. Great appetizer and would order again if available - The fish entree was delicious. I would definitely order this again also. Great sauces on this dish. THE BAD - So many bland dishes. Dishes desperately needed salt. Many appetizers and pasta dishes felt one note and looked more appetizing than they ended up being - Pasta was super chewy. While I appreciate fresh made pasta, this pasta was bland and felt under cooked. -The gnocchi dish was not great. The sauce likely broke and there was a really unappealing rim of straight oil that made the whole dish taste very poorly and made my husband lose his appetite. Overall, I'd stick to a few appetizers and the seafood entree but skip the pasta dishes. This is unfortunate given the fusion concept should have higher quality and more flavorful pasta. read more

Had a really good date night at Junah this past Saturday (6/20/26). It's Italian-Japanese fusion, which seems like an unusual pairing to me, but I feel it worked very well. Standouts were the miso cod, Aurora crudo, tagliolino al mentaiko, and matcha tiramisu. The cod was the overall winner. My wife said it was one of the best things she's ever eaten, which is high praise from her. Overall, I thought it was one of the more interesting upscale meals I've had in Salt Lake recently. The vibe was not stuffy at all, and we had a great time and incredible service. Low light was the inability to seat us for our reservation on time despite a text confirming our table was ready. I think this place makes for the perfect date night, with its impressive and intimate ambiance, and artistic, mildly adventurous dishes... it's just lacking that special something that puts it in the tier of Koyote, and at 2-3x the price. The standout dish for me was the aurora crudo, though i was left wanting so much more (the portion is minuscule) - punchy citrus hits, crunchy chip texture combines with the rigid but soft sashimi, giving way to a light tuna flavor... I was tempted to keep the vinaigrette to dip the bread in! This place had been on my list for a minute and I was excited to finally check it out. It's a very intimate space - only maybe 12ish tables and a bar. We got a reservation in advance and sat at the bar. For an appetizer, bottle of wine, and two entrees we paid around $150. It's a little bit on the pricier side, but our bottle of wine had a lot to do with that. I believe that was $65. The food was good - I was expecting more of an Asian influence in the dishes but what I ordered what mostly Italian influence. Before we ordered, they gave us toast and a sampler of their pesto olives, truffle butter, and another butter. Everything was delicious! I got their tortellini and it was good, but left me wanting more. Parking in this area can be tricky, especially on the weekends so keep that in mind! read more

My friend was visiting from out of town, so we decided to try this place for the first time. It's a Japanese and Italian fusion restaurant, which I've never heard of before. The restaurant was small with a high-end atmosphere and great service. Parking could be tough later in the night, but I was able to find a spot just north of the restaurant on Jefferson street. We had a reservation at 6 p.m. and were immediately seated. Delicious (free!) bread was delivered to our table with a truffle and chive butter along with pesto with olives. I can't tell you how happy I am to see that bread is still free at some places. We enjoyed the Midnight Burrata and Aurora Crudo for appetizers. Both were amazing, but the beautiful presentation and complex flavors of the crudo won me over as my favorite. For entrees, my friend had the Risotto Vegano and loved it. I had the Tagliolino al Mentaiko, which looked simple but had complex flavors with a hint of spice. I also tried a grapefruit sake drink that was like a boozy grapefruit soda, which was good but I was sad that they didn't have cocktails. We finished our meal with a Crème Brûlée which was a great portion and delicious but lacked that signature hard sugar crust. Our bill came to about $125 before tip. The food was wonderful. Asian fusion IS my thing! The only real complaint I have was the service. Our server was not bad, but sometimes, it took a while to get a hold of her. Also, I asked for more complimentary bread and butter, but she did not bring it out. In addition, she didn't seem too friendly. The food itself was good. Each dish was definitely unique. The tagliolino al mentaiko had a very subtle taste to it, but it was nice and creamy. The matcha tiramisu was soft and had a hint of matcha flavor. I really like the midnight burrata! It came out very hot haha I think it could be a dessert with how sweet it is. The complimentary bread and butter/sauce was nice to have. The butters are made in house. I like how they gave me different kinds of butter, one being truffle flavored. I wanted more bread & butter but was not given any more, even though I specifically asked. Overall, nice vibe. "Fine dining is an experience that changes you from the moment that you sit down to the moment that you leave." Our visit today was disappointing. From the beginning, something felt off. While neighboring tables were being walked through the day's specials, we were asked twice if we were ready to order without ever being told they even existed. It left us genuinely wondering whether we had somehow been overlooked. It felt uncomfortable watching other tables receive a level of service that we weren't. When I politely brought the issue to our waitress's attention, I wasn't looking for an argument. Mistakes happen. Instead of Acknowledging it, she ignored my concern and immediately started reciting the specials as if nothing had happened. I asked about the concern I had just raised again. Rather than addressing it, she became defensive and said my partner and I were "very engaged in our own," so she couldn't tell us the specials. That explanation didn't make sense to us. If we were so engaged in our own conversation, how did we overhear another server explaining the specials from two tables away? I replied, "That's not true. We--" Before I could even finish my sentence, she made a hand gesture toward me, in my face, passive-aggressively asked if I wanted to speak to the manager, then answered her own question with, "Mm-hmm. Yeah, I think so!" Then turned around and walked away. My partner and I were completely stunned. I never asked to speak with the manager- the waitress ended the conversation herself. The manager listened and switched us to another server. Our second server, Savannah, was wonderful and is the only reason we stayed instead of walking out. She stepped in quickly, was professional throughout the rest of the evening, and did everything she could to salvage the experience. Kudos to her. The restaurant removed one appetizer from our bill, but this was never about the money. We don't expect perfection, and we don't need a server to go above and beyond honestly. We simply expect to be treated with respect and for situations to be handled professionally. After years of living in New York City and traveling extensively for food, I can honestly say that if this is the level of hospitality I can expect at Junah, then it simply isn't worth coming back. The food was good, but it wasn't good enough to make up for this kind of encountering. Unfortunately, I left with a completely different impression of Junah than I had before. As long as Victoria is there, we won't be returning. Based on my experience, I'd recommend requesting a different server early on. read more

Stopped into Junah for the first time and it is now one of my favorite restaurants in Utah. Our server, Lauren was incredible and helped us navigate a menu with unfamiliar offerings. Our party ordered five different appetizers. We all loved the beet salad and burrata dish. The homemade sourdough and butter were to die for. The glazed mushrooms were good, though I probably wouldn't order again. I thought the arancini flavors were a little strange together so I wouldn't go for that again either. All 4 of the entrees were outstanding and offered novelty with intense depth of flavor. The mentaiko pasta was the table favorite and possibly the best pasta dish I've ever tried. I was also blown away by the pappardelle special. Dessert left a little to be desired. The matcha tiramisu didn't taste anything like tiramisu and reminded me more of matcha tres leches. The crème brûlée was fine but I'll probably skip dessert next time. While not everything was a home run for me flavor wise, there were several standout dishes that blew my mind. This place is exceptional from the food, presentation, service, and ambiance. It's also priced very reasonably. If you want a unique dining experience with a skillfully creative menu and flavors that will punch you in the face, you're going to love Junah. read more

One dish for Antipasta, one for Primi, and one for Secondi. Antipasta - Gyoza Shaped Ravioli We started with the gyoza shaped ravioli. I wish there were more than four pieces for 13 dollars, but they were delicious. Each fold was perfectly shaped and the sauce wasn't overwhelming. Primi - Tagliolino Al Mentaiko This was the standout dish. I've had a few mentaiko cream based pastas before, and this one was out of the park delicious. The chiffonade shiso leaves on the side added a nice bitter note to balance the creamy, salty pasta. Great balance. Secondi - Tagliata di Bosco For our main, we ordered the steak dish. Once James Beard mentions were posted, I had to get over Junah to see what they had cooking up! Indeed it was stellar food and SO reasonably priced. Every dish was super thoughtful and approached with a unique point of view. The standout for me was the tagliolino. Unreal. I wasn't bowled over by the design of the space or the curation of the atmosphere. I wish the room were as aesthetically thought provoking as the food. But overall, it's such a strong menu, the kitchen staff execution was fantastic and the culinary buzz is very exciting and commendable. I'll definitely suggest people check it out. read more

We started off with the arancini and gyoza which were two of the most bland and unimpressive appetizers we had ever had. Our first main was the special which was a wagyu "lasagna" (if you want to call it that). It was burnt to a crisp on the outside and the inside resembled mushy cat food. It was also $70 which is ludicrous. Our second main was the Tagliata which was just as disappointing. The steak could've been mooing still and the sides were just as bland as the appetizers. Overall, the staff was nice but the food was overpriced and some of the worst we've ever had. How they are nominated for a James Beard award is beyond me. i felt this place is quite overhyped online for what it is. $30-$40 a dish for small servings and long waits for food that have you leaving hungrier than when you came in. Hostess wasnt the warmest when we checked in for our reservation. We were seated at the smaller tables that are only a few inches apart so you unfortunately hear everything at the tables next to you, and when people get out around you, you end up with a strangers bottom crossing your face on the way out. Also had the unfortunate experience of having a loud manspreader next to us who tainted our experience as well. Overall i felt like the dishes left some to be desired flavor and portion wise and i dont think ill be returning. My favorite dish was the mussels which is sadly only a for now special. read more

Yet another star in the glittering Central Ninth business district! This neighborhood probably has the highest concentration of diverse, delicious food in Salt Lake City. Junah is the latest project from Chef Hiro Tagai (Koyote, Purgatory), an interesting interplay of Italian and Japanese cooking. The restaurant is small---maybe six to eight tables plus bar seating, but it's cozy and welcoming. The open kitchen allowed me to peer in and observe the magic happening. The food was very intentional and quite tasty. I started with a delightful complimentary small plate of olives in an herby marinade---an unexpected, but totally refreshing take on the briny fruits! The grilled bread with herb or truffled butter was another present from the chefs. I selected some fried squash blossoms from the day's specials---the light, crispy batter was crunchy and delicious. A beef tartare atop potato pavé bricks was also a hit, unctuous and surprisingly filling. I chose the fettuccine with vongole---tiny, sweet clams in a thick, garlicky sauce---for my main course. Dessert was a crème brûlée; this was probably the weakest element on the menu. I'd have preferred a much thicker, crunchier brûléed layer and the orangey custard wasn't my favorite. I paid about $135 for my sumptuous meal, including a glass of wine, a soda and an espresso with dinner. This was a fair price for the quality and portion size of the food. Service was good. Be aware that it can be difficult to find parking in this neighborhood, particularly on weekend evenings. read more

The place is stunning. The complimentary bread with assorted house butters was the perfect start, we were obsessed with each unique flavor. My first time trying tartar since I normally scare away from it, and they absolutely know what they are doing. The flavor was rich and intense in the best way possible. I went to Junah twice this month (first time ever going), and both times were outstanding! Across these two visits, I enjoyed all of the dishes I have attached to this review. I won't write about all of them since that would be too long, but I highly recommend all of them! One of my personal favorites were the Tagliata di Bosco -- I'm not a huge fan of mushrooms or truffles, but this steak dish was really tasty! The truffle sauce was delicious, and I found myself eating the sauce just with the mushrooms after I finished the steak! I also want to give a shoutout to both of the desserts! The crème brûlée and matcha tiramisu won over members of my party who are not fans of tiramisu and crème brûlée at all! I love Junah's overall take on Japanese-Italian food, it's a really fun combination that I can say is pretty unique here, i can't say I've ever been anywhere like it! Something I really like about Junah, and also want to mention for any potential customers, is that the plates are designed to be small. I like this style because it gives the opportunity to try or split different things from the menu with your party. I came out of each experience feeling like I had a well rounded meal! Both times, the service was excellent. My servers were very nice and attentive, and it made for a great night out! I love the design of the restaurant itself! The lights were nice on the eyes, it felt very intentional and small -- I loved being able to see the kitchen from my tables! We went to Junah with a couple of friends and had high hopes for the Japanese-Italian fusion concept, but overall left disappointed. The food was certainly interesting, and there were some creative ideas on the menu, but the flavors didn't really come together for us. One dish in particular was notably bad: one of the gnocchi courses. The highlight of the meal was the fish main, which was my favorite dish of the night. Great sauce. Unfortunately, the experience took a sharp turn at the end. We had ordered dessert as part of the four-course menu, but then we were told our reservation had ended at the 90-minute mark and were essentially kicked out. Even though dessert had already been ordered, we were rushed out, which made the situation very awkward. For a four-course menu, that time limit felt aggressive. First time trying Japanese-Italian fusion and was amazed by the flavors and textures. The place is ntimate and our server Lauren was very helpful and attentive. We had the Midnight Burrata, Glazed Maitake, Tagliono al Mentaiko, and a special dish of the day that had spicy paccheri with Italian sausage. The Midnight Burrata was very enjoyable with the roasted pistachios giving it a unique texture. Be sure to ask for extra bread and a spoon. The Glazed Maitake had oyster mushroom with a glaze made with soy sauce and anise. It was very savory and the garlic potato foam balances the flavor. Wish there was more of the potato foam as the mushroom was very flavorful. Never had Mentaiko sauce before so I didn't expect a sauce can be this light with a slight fish taste. The perilla leaves were very strong so a little less would be better and perhaps a little bit of mushroom and/or sprinkled pepper. The spicy paccheri with Italian sausage had a more familiar flavor profile unlike our other dishes, but it was still very good. My family and I went here for Christmas Eve dinner, and loved it. Truly great service: attentive, pleasant, professional, not intrusive. The food was perfect. For appetizers, we got the midnight burrata and aurora crudo (sashimi), which were a huge hit at the table. For our main courses, we went with the ravioli, spaghetti, gnocchi all' aragosta (lobster bisque), and wagyu ragu. Each dish was simply delicious. This place is pricey, but I didn't feel ripped off.
