I'm not sure at what point I got scammed, whether it was at this rental agency or at the gas pump. But I was told that I was being given a car with a full gas tank. Later in the day I realized that the fuel gauge was not descending. It was faulty (there was a check engine light on, probably unrelated). When I went to fill up before returning the car (6 hours of renting) I was surprised that it cost 500 pesos. I'm renting and driving another car at Playa (didn't want to take the car ferry) and I've done so in years past so I'm familiar with how much gasoline is supposed to cost. I am certain that I didn't do 500 pesos worth of driving. Now at the gas pump the attendant asked me to move forward a bit (but it was a little suspicious since there was no need to do so); I was then distracted by another attendant washing my front window who kept loudly and unnecessarily insisting that it's complimentary. They could have pulled something in that moment when I couldn't see the pump. So, to recap, insist on a functioning fuel gauge and watch gas station attendants like a hawk. Another piece of advice is to skip Cozumel all together since everything there (snorkeling, beaches, food, merchandise, quality of service) can be amply topped by what's on the mainland. read more

Please do not do any business with this fraudulent company. I paid for what was supposed to be a new sedan with AC and automatic transmission. The car was old and poorly maintained, barely drivable; the driver's window wouldn't fully close, the engine needed maintenance and would often stall at low speeds. I took detailed pictures of the car before the rental, from all possible angles, or so I thought. After returning the car on the same day, they wanted to charge me for some scratches underneath the car. Yes, on the bottom surface, which would not be visible and cannot be inspected or photographed without lifting a car or laying down on the ground. After 30 minutes of arguing and my attempts to call the Police, I was finally able to leave. Of course I missed my ferry to the mainland and was barely able to return to Cancun in time to catch my flight home the next morning. I have full documentation of the incident, including photos before and after the rental (they look the same, of course), photos and audio recordings of the employee whom I was dealing with, who fully agrees with me that the "damage" could not have been plausibly detected or visible on any photos taken. I see all of these positive reviews of this company and I just know they are fake. There is absolutely no way possible anyone has had a positive experience renting a car from this company. Maybe 10 years ago, but in 2016 and forward, you want to avoid this "business" at all cost! I take full responsibility for this disastrous experience and I just want to share the details of how things went down. It begin in Playa del Carmen as we were walking to find out information about the boats that ran to Cozumel. Juan from Rentadora comes over and I blow him off. But as it usually goes, Juan would not stop and my wife felt bad for him, so she decided to talk to him. Juan tells us how he can take care of everything and make our trip to Cozumel wonderful. Salesman working hard here. So now we are inside the little shop and Juan shows us a photo of a Chevrolet HHR convertible and says, "$55 for the day." Juan goes on to talk about other adventures we can purchase from him such as a glass bottom boat for snorkeling. I was turning down all offers, but my wife wanted a car and so we accepted his deal from the photo of the Chevrolet HHR. I said to Juan, "I want to put the entire rental on our credit card." Juan said, "no problem, I can do that." Juan informed us that we had to return the car by 8pm. That was tight, but seemed okay based on our plans on Cozumel. I asked Juan about purchasing CDW insurance. He said, "if you want, you can buy that at Cozumel for about $10." We had to return to our hotel to gather some things before making the journey to Cozumel. Juan required a deposit for the car to hold it for us. So we left 400 pesos as a deposit. Juan was generous enough to offer us his bikes so we could ride back to our hotel faster and return to rent the car. We took him up on that offer. Hey, one positive experience from this ordeal! When we returned to see Juan to pay for the rental, I handed Juan the credit card and he said, "oh no, cash only!" I told him that I did not have enough cash to rent the car. He suggested that I go to the ATM and get cash. I told him that I had no ATM card to do that and it had to be on a credit card. Begrudgingly, Juan conceded to allow us to charge the remaining balance on our card, but would not return the 400 pesos that we paid so we could charge on the card. Thanks Jaun! So generous you are, liar Juan! That should have been the tipping point where I walked away and forgot about the 400 pesos. However, the boat was leaving soon and we had visions of a convertible awaiting our arrival, we moved forward and completed the transaction with Juan. Upon arrival at Rentadora on Cozumel, there were many customers standing there before us. We were not sure who was working there or who to speak with at first. Eventually, we were greeted about 20 minutes later after the others were taken care of. I presented the paperwork from Juan at Playa del Carmen and the guy starts processing some papers. Then we are told that the car must be returned by 7pm. I responded with, "what?!? We were told 8pm!" The guy responded with, "no, he told you the time of the last boat back to Playa del Carmen, but we close at 7pm." (By the way, the last boat out was at 10pm.) Another lie from Rentadora. I was not happy at this point, but it was already 3:30pm and we wanted to get on our way. I asked about the CDW insurance and he told me it was going to cost $30. I did not even bother reciting what Juan said (chalk up another lie). I just know I wanted full insurance in Mexico, so I paid for it. Just before paying for the insurance, the guy asked if I would like to pay $15 USD so that I did not have to pay for refilling the gas. I've read about the problems and scams refilling gas in Mexico, so I agreed with the idea that it's just $15 to save me from having to deal with another scam. Finally, we are taken to our rental car that was conveniently not in sight during our rental process. I did ask about the location of the car and was told it was just around the corner "in a few minutes." The writing was on the wall, but what could I do at this point after already paying for everything? We finally were taken to the car and all of my worst nightmares have come true. What do I see? We are presented with a car that is falling apart and appeared to be very unsafe for driving. The guy starts walking around the car to mark on his paper the damages. I begin taking photos at about every foot of space I see. He says to me, "no need to take photos, I am writing it here on my paper." So I respond, "this care is terrible and I don't think you can write all of the damages on that paper." I did my best to not incite anything and just accept that I have been ripped off (a total of $105 for a 3 hour rental after insurance). Time to get in the car and do some sight seeing. After getting off of the 9am ferry we headed straight to Rentadora ISIS (not to be confused with the group in the middle east, lol), and like another review stated, Margarita was sitting behind a desk (cute lady). We didn't have a reservation, but were able to quickly get 2 scooters. The whole rental paperwork process took all of 10 minutes... no up selling, no hidden fees, just a flat 20 bucks a scooter and we were on our way. We when got back later that afternoon (btw: they close at 6:30pm), Margarita was right there behind the desk in same place we left her. They checked the bikes, gave us the thumbs up and we were on our way. This place is a gem and must for anyone renting a vehicle in Cozumel. We had a wonderful experience renting from Rentadora Isis while visiting Cozumel for the second time. Our first trip to Cozumel did not go well when we rented a car through Hertz. They were extrememly over priced and had horrible customer service. Rentadora Isis was completely different. We booked our car through their web site prior to our trip. We called to confirm that everything was ready and Margarita assured us that we were good to go. Upon arrival they actually had the car delivered to our vacation home. It was clean and well maintained and as promised by their website. Also the pricing on the website matched exactly what we were charged. No hidden fees or surprises. We had a great trip and loved being able to drive everywhere on the island. When we returned the car and waited for our ride to the airport, Margarita chatted with us, offered us a taste of a fruit native to the island and was overall just a really sweet lady. I do not recommend Rentadora Isis on Cozumel. Some tourist book recommended it, but I made a mistake. I should have rented from Hertz even if it cost twice as much. Rentadora Isis charged only 800 pesos for one day, but it was a beat up 2000 Volkswagen Beetle. But it seemed much older than 2000 model because it was very noisy and very smelly like exhaust fumes. It was hard to drive, and underpowered, and Cozumel can be a little stressful driving. Finally, the day after I gave my credit card information to the vendor at Rentadora Isis, a young man, who hand-wrote copied all of my credit card information from my Mastercard, including three digit security code. The very next day I received a $606 fraudulent charge on my credit card from an international shipping company and I had to cancel my credit card. I really don't trust these people. Go with Hertz no matter what it costs. read more

We immediately asked for our money back and got push back that for the $55 a day we had been qouted when we asked for a newer care with AC, that at that price it just wasn't possible to expect a new car with A/C. Absolutely no issues upon return - no surprises, no added charges. They even let me store our luggage for a couple of hours before our flight. I came to Cozumel after hearing good things about this place. This place is up a little ways from the ferry and most of the town. However ignore all the other people shouting at you and come here. The nice gentleman rented me a very good scooter with helmet for only $20 for the whole day. The only thing he needed was a license and a credit card to write down as a deposit. He charges your card when you get back and inspects the scooter for any damages. It was very fast I was in there for like ten minutes and on my way. The scooter worked great and it wasn't a real beat up old scooter. They also rent cars, Jeep's and other vehicles for the day or longer. We rented a little old purple convertible VW beetle for $40 for the day. We had an incredible time driving it around, as well as snapping photos of it! It was a stick shift and I was a bit intimidated to drive it since I'd never driven a stick shift that old before, but it was totally fine. We drove all around the island, including the east side, highly recommended!! The east side was SO beautiful. Doing the paperwork with the business owner was easy and no hassle, as was returning the car. I think that a lot of the cars go pretty early in the day - we arrived around noon and got the last convertible left. If you rent a convertible here just remember you'll probably want plenty of sunscreen and something to tie your hair back with if you have long hair! read more

Just finished having a fantastic trip to Cozumel but on our final day was pretty much dampened with our last experience with Isis Car Rental. There seems to be an bad problem with license plates getting stolen off cars. Our front plate was stolen and ISIS charge us an extra $200-US for replacement. This issue being no fault of our own or negligent behavior on our part we felt it should not have been our responsibility to pay. They should have insurance to cover these issues. The owner was very rude and would not even bulge on covering half of it when we asked. We have used their service several times on previous visits but unfortunately never again. As long as you know going in that you are not dealing with a national car rental chain you will be fine here. The cars are rough and aren't in tip top shape, but they are reasonably priced. On the island, a check engine light doesn't mean much, even in the taxis we have ridden in. I have rented from them on the island and a couple of times in Playa Del Carmen. They were kind and responsive to our needs. They picked us up at the Playa pier and dropped us off at the Cozumel airport. They even gave us an upgrade when the bug we rented had a broken seat belt. However, I encourage you to pay the extra $15 dollars a day for zero deductible insurance. This way you are covered in any situation. If there cars were new and clean, I would give them a perfect rating. read more

This car rental was rated well and came recommended by our Airbnb host. It was a short walk from the ferry terminal and we were helped right away. We wanted just a basic economy car with A/C - basically something we can lock up and leave in a parking lot without having to haul everything with us. We were given a Chevy Matisse (?) and got a slightly bigger one at the quoted rate because the smaller one wasn't available. Everything worked well, a bit worn out and dusty on the inside, but we didn't want anything fancy to attract thieves. Return also was easy and fortunately they got their credit card machine working (I think they just preferred cash to avoid paying fees and first said credit card machine wasn't working). My only issue with them was the big sticker announcing it was a rental car - and that it said ISIS...not a great association. read more

I first received a Chevy with broken seat belts, so I returned and rented a Volkswagon Golf for a week stay while in Cozumel. There was no issue in doing this. The trade off was very easy. The staff was welcoming and very helpful. I decided not to fill up the tank on the return and was expecting to overpay for that decision. They charged a very reasonable amount for this. They gave me a scooter that did not work properly. It kept stalling on me throughout the whole island and pretty much ruined our trip. Everytime it stalled I would be on the side of the road and spend a few minutes having to restart it. We had to rush back before they closed and didn't have time to enjoy the island. The guy at the rental office was well aware of this and not even surprised when we told him upon returning the scooter! They also are very slow when you are trying to get your car/scooter. These folks were great to rent from. We had a car with AC which was a huge blessing. We arrived in Cozumel and took a taxi to our condo and these folks delivered the car to us. At the end of the week when we were done with the car they brought back to our condo. The car was not perfect but is functional for Cozumel. We put approximately 200 miles on the car in a week. Margarita at ISIS Rentadora in Cozumel must get giddy reading all the good things about her and the company. This is another accolade. We've rented twice from ISIS and have always had a good experience. I don't know how she keeps things straight using a spiral notebook to keep reservation information, but she does. It's always straightforward and honest when renting a car from here. I've knocked down the star rating since, let's face it, the cars are in good shape, not new at all, but the two that we've rented have met our needs. If you need a 2017 or 2016 car, you need to go somewhere else and pay the accompanying difference in prices. I'm done with renting from Fiesta rentals at the hotel, they are often the same type you would get at ISIS, but at almost double the price after you figure in the insurance that is required. I've got a rental scheduled for our stay this coming June. And will continue to use ISIS in the future. read more

The most fun you can have is to rent one of the old VW convertibles! You can't beat the price or the friendly service Margarita and her staff offer. They gave us a map and explained the best way to go to the free beaches. Remember the car is older and not in pristine condition but they drive well and were a blast to drive around the island! My husband and I and another couple rented the car at the bargain price of $35.00 which included insurance and tax. The guys sat up front and the ladies in the back. The look of joy on the guys faces was priceless, they felt like a couple of teenagers. Our horn didn't work but my girlfriend and I improvised by yelling out beep beep every time we passed another beetle or scooter on the beach road. We were able to stop at three beaches along the coast. This was so much cheaper than an overpriced excursion on our cruise ship and we had plenty of time to enjoy ourselves. Who knew that for $35 a bunch of 58-69 year olds could have so much fun! Tip: after you drop the car off walk a block down to Wet Wendy's for a cold beer.
