I stayed here on business. The rooms were clean, fresh and comfortable - very large and spacious (ideal for a family) with a well appointed (but a little dated) bathroom. There is wireless broadband available for a charge through BTConnect. The TV has a very limited range of channels and there is no mini bar/fridge facility. My colleague had the room over looking the canal which sounds lovely - but not when the ducks are up at 5 am! There is ample parking, and a cash point onsite. However the staff at the front desk were not very helpful - no offer of help with bags despite it being obvious I was struggling with the many very heavy doors located throughout the building. There is a swimming pool but I didn't venture that far. The hotel is host to a number of tribute acts and other cabaret style events so it is worth checking what is on before you book. The website does make the hotel look more luxurious than the reality.
The one thing that really lets down this hotel is the food. The Baby Swan Restaurant is where breakfast is served. There is a good selection of cereals and fruit juice. The fruit (orange and grapefruit segments) always had a slight frost on them like were still defrosting. Despite the very low numbers the cooked breakfast is self service and kept warm, and looked a couple of hours old by the time I arrived at breakfast at 8.30. We ordered toast each day which was either burnt black, or looked like it had been waved in front of the toaster. The evening meal (£23 for 3 courses) was over priced, and the food served did not live up to the descriptions on the menu. The menu has a lot of fish, and there is not much other choice. No salad or lighter meals in sight! Desert was obviously defrosted to order, and my lemon tart was ruined as it was smothered in raspberry sauce like the kind you would get from an ice cream van. I'd recommend eating out in town were you can get much better quality for a lot less money! read more
