The room was large with two queen sized beds and a sofa and chair, a large flat screen TV and a fire place for the winter nights. Bath Robes and Moulton & Brown toiletries in the bathroom. The food was excellent (there is a sample menu on the website) and there was a large selection of wines but the best bit was the beers. They had Timothy Taylors Landlord and Best Bitter, Theakstons Best Bitter, Dark Horse Best Bitter, Moorhouses Elslack Ale and Thwaites Wainwright as well as a range of keg beers, lagers and ciders - Heaven!!!

When we first drove into this fantasy-like atmosphere it reminded me of the Hobbits home of rolling hills in Lord of the Rings. We stayed at a bed n breakfast in town and we were told the Kings Head Pub was a must to have dinner. So, of course we went the first night thinking we would try something else out the other nights.....needless to say, we never made it to any other place to dine. The only thing pub about the Kings Head is that there is beer flow here. Besides that.....This beautifully, quaint old world polished wood bar with tucked away booths, and its warm, gleaming, open pot stove fireplace. Is one of the best restaurants I have ever had the honor to consume platefuls of masterpiece after masterpiece. THE freshest farm/garden to table I have ever tasted, they had a chalkboard menu wall where by the second time someone walks out to erase, you wait in anticipation to see that what you really want wont be removed. I wish I had adequate words to describe the pleasure from the atmosphere, to the food and beyond. If we only had a way to have Kings Head here in America, one could only keep dreaming. I would describe the hotel as a typical conference-type hotel. The room was a large twin room with lovely views over the canal if you have a room at the back. The rooms were clean and the beds were comfy. We did not use the gym, bar or restaurant. Parking is free, as is internet. The staff were friendly and helpful. There is a full size kettle with instant coffee, tea and milk (get extra milk from reception if you're heavy on the tea/coffee like we were). They do offer breakfast (not included in our rate), but we opted to walk into town.

We stayed for two nights so we had a chance to use the attached health club/pool which I found shabby and some way below local authority provision complete with unadvertised (and designated) partial pool closure for swimming lessons given by a very rude woman. We also had a celebratory family meal but found the catering to be quite poor particularly with regard to the steaks (although my son's gammon was also very disappointing). Two of our group ordered 'Steak Dianne cooked at table by our chef' but their small, low end steaks were cooked (not to specification) by a member of waiting staff. Our room was on the ground floor so were became very aware with the extremely noisy plumbing every time the room above used the bathroom. As I write this I'm feeling the urge to cut my rating down to two stars so i better stop now........

Table next to me sent back their coffee as it had been spilled, the couple at the next table were complaining they had been there for 20 mins without service. I decided to pay at the bar and the barman nearly charged me £8.00! Don't think that's right I said. He went off to find the waitress and once she had totalled up the bill I suggested she went to serve the couple and I would take the card to the reception to process. I told receptionist and he went off to rescue her. She'd said she was managing he said. No she isn't I said. Such a shame as its a fab place!
